I posted this on another forum but it's worth repeating. Last November we had lots of sand fleas bites that itched like mad. We tried bug spray, wipes, and aloe gel. Nothing worked that well.
We had brought along some all natural raw shea butter to use as skin moisturizer. We started using it on our legs and arms to see if it would help with the itching. It worked! And it also seemed to repel the sand fleas. No more bites and much needed relief from that itching. The swelling and redness on the existing bites also went away.
One Jamaican told us that after we were in Jamaica for a week the bugs will stop biting us. He said they just go after the new arrivals. LOL? So maybe it wasn’t the shea butter at all. Perhaps they just moved on to the new arrivals on the beach? But the stuff is under $10 for 8oz on ebay and you can always use it as a skin moisturizer. The bug repellent and itch relief was a welcome bonus for us.
We won't leave home without it.

hockey socks..inviromentaly friendly..spell check waiter please
Deet - far and away the best deterrent.
The best remedy I've found is the red stripe they sell up on the west end,it seems when I drink that I'm never bothered by the fleas;)
If you give them a couple of hundred $ J they usually go away ;-)
Or DEET works well too...
Really I think all the ideas-so my wife is bring coconut oil-saw fleas don't bother me-but ill keep trying the Red Stripes again;)-rum punches ect....
Saw a guy in Negril in Jan. with flea collars around his ankles. He said they worked well.
If you mean to repel sand fleas, then we use anything with DEET.
DON'T buy the sand fleas anything! Them just turn around and bite you.
Stay on the cliffs :)
The West End is the best End!!
I use deep woods off in the green can!

Thanks much for that info mi gon try it they feast on mi in Jan!
Like I said we just tried it and it worked. It's cheap, has many uses, and it's not a liquid so there is no problem packing it since it's like a waxy paste.
We bought some on eBay for Christmas presents but first got it at an Oyster Festival from the Shea Butter Lady for $10 a pound.
These were the uses the label recommended:
•Treatment of dry skin, eczema and minor burns.
•Pain relief from swelling and arthritis.
•Improves muscle relaxation and stiffness.
•Sun screen (due to its rich content of Vitamins E & F).
•Treats dark spots, stretch marks & blemishes.
•Massages, diaper rash & can be used as a hair conditioner.
It's worth a try and if it doesn't work for you there is plenty of Red Stripe around. ;)

DO NOT USE FLEA COLLARS, FFS!!!!!
DEET does work. You need to make sure it has a high-percentage of DEET. Ultrathon by 3M is the brand that the US Military forces use. It repels all insects.
For sand flea bites, or any bug bite, swab the bite with....hang on........ammonia. Yep. Unscented plain old ammonia. Then, apply a topical steroid. Hydrocortisone works and you can buy it at any pharma in Negril. A better choice would be betamethasone, but that's prescription only. I don't know if you need a prescription for it in JA, though...
Standing knee deep in the Caribbean keeps them off my ankles.
I use limes, cut up in halves I just smear it on, seems to work.
ive used flea collers for 20 years and not one bite.the 10 years before that,i was bitten at least 200 times on the ankles.(no flea collers)
We feed them toasted tourist with a Red Stripe chaser.
Do sand fleas have birthdays??
Don't think they live a whole year
Vince, is the sand raked in the mornings where your wife sets up?
If not, raking will pretty much eliminate the problem for the day.
skin so soft with Picaridin worked well for us this week but bugs really only seemed to be out for a bit after sun set, not bad at all
OK, I've warned people about wearing flea collars before and I will do it again. If you like chemical burns and direct exposure to known neurotoxins, then I guess the flea collar is for you.

WTF? A flea collar? I have NEVER let my PETS wear them......sheeeeesh.....
I always buy my sand fleas little rasta hats with the dreadlocks poking out of the bottom...They really get a charge out of wearing them.
The sand at the resort we stay at is raked every morning and the sand fleas still find me! I'm just diligent with the deep woods off and it at least keeps the bites to a minimum. I call it my Jamaica perfume.
Wife and I have used the cat flea collars - they work.. but there have been warnings about using them posted here and elsewhere.. They never bothered us.. Except for that slight tick I have now...
