DRY COCONUTS! CABBAGE! ONIONS!!
If you remember the old time fruit men that would sing about their wares as they came down your street, this is that guy.
He was pushing a homemade cart.
Put together with what looked like spare parts from an older cart.
The wheels did not match, one side was newer wood, the other old boards.
It looked like an old rickshaw the guys in China use when they run in front, pulling it
and you sit in the back.
But, this one has the guy in back pushing the cart.
He sings and dances to a tune in his head.
"COCONUT! SCAAAAALIONS! CABBAAAAAAGE!!!, THE BEST SPICE AND TWICE AS NICE!
He had a very nice voice, could have been a singer in somebody's band.
He was wearing a very colorful sleeveless Rasta t-shirt
and a Red, yellow, green and black Bandana around his head.
He stopped in front of our house and started to do some dance moves to go along with his singing.
He was getting down like brother Brown.
Using the weight of the cart in front as a counter balance.
He twisted and turned during his dancing like the cart was his partner.
He had some good moves!
The ladies on the block were watching him and
they were speaking in deep patois that I could not understand,
but, you could tell there were sexual connotations in their statements.
He had the biggest grin on his face as he danced and heard the comments.
My sister yelled his name, he stopped and she went out to the road to view his wares.
Being nosy, I followed and peered into his cart.
Dried Coconuts, onions. cabbages, scallions were lined up in the cart, just like the song that he was singing.
He had some giant plantains and was bragging about the size of his fruit.
That got a good laugh from the ladies.
Negotiating the prices is always in order, so, my sister picked a few items for dinner that night, paid him and walked back to the house.
The man started singing immediately as he raised his cart handle and was on his way.
CABAGES!!, DRIED COCONUTS!!!, PLANTAINS, ONIONS!!!!!!!!
COME and get them while their hot, MI ALWAYS NEAR RIGHT ON THE SPOT!
