Re: Newbie Advice and Safety
On my way down solo, staying at SeaStar also!!!
I've stayed @ SeaStar on my last solo trip as well, that being said it's safe to walk down the lane to the cliff drive during the day, It's probably safe to walk at night in a group but I myself only take cabs after sundown.
Don't walk the beach at night by yourself always walk in groups and be aware of your surroundings and dark areas.
There are many people on here that will say it's okay to walk the beach at night but my Rasta friend always told us NOT to walk the beach alone unless he was with us!!
I don't like the valuemaster parking lot after dark either......
Just be aware of your surroundings at all times. especially if you go out drinking and come home late!!!! I personally like to chill at my hotel at night!!!! Not sure about Catcha gardens security (although I'm sure they're good) but SeaStar is very secure!!! I always fell safe there..

Re: Newbie Advice and Safety
You will love Catcha Gardens! Security there is top-notch and everyone that works on the property is just like family. They have the best pool hands down!
Make sure you pop across the road to LTU for sunset and dinner and some nice cold bevvies :)
Been to Seastar many times, great property, great people, and definitely secure.
Take a walk down the road past the lighthouse to Out of Town Pastry for great fresh patties and cocobread.
There is also a young man that rides his bike early in the morning with fresh bakery items and juices. That is our breakfast every day when we are at the Gardens.
FYI, just around sunset the traffic outside of Rick's is CRAZY and the higglers are relentless. We try to avoid that part of the road at all costs during that time :)
Have a great time and congrats for busting out of "jail"

The security at Catcha Gardens is good. Stayed twice and both times it was a very pleasant visit. The staff is great and you'll enjoy the dogs. They're real good doggies and a big part of the security staff. :D

Re: Newbie Advice and Safety
Be very careful walking the road as the cars go quickly for the size and twisty nature of the road. (They aren't really going that fast, but on the small road it seems very fast). And remember if you come from the US that the cars drive in the opposite lane. Look right when you'd look left here. But the road is safe to walk day or night. More caution should be used on the adjoining lanes and I wouldn't venture up them at night.

Husker John....agree with you totally!! Thanks for posting that awesome pic of Pumpkin and Belle. CFSG is one of my favs!!!
Re: Newbie Advice and Safety
Been at Seastar the last 10 days and security is top notch.
Very safe area. Seastar lane is very safe.
Wise Choice store on the corner is as cheap as anywhere to get supplies. Use common sense. Watch for traffic on One Love Drive and enjoy. LTU across from Gardens has nice food and view.
Re: Newbie Advice and Safety
Ditto to pretty much everything said above. Stayed at Seastar Nov/Dec and the lane is an easy walk day and night, though at night I might not walk alone. Bring a flashlight for walking at night, there are some dark spots on the lane, especially if the power goes out. Generators at Seastar are great, but don't help on the road. On a moonless night it is DARK.
Wise Choice is a great little grocery, has pretty much everything you could want. We never figured out its exact closing time, but it was somewhere around 8, so if you need late night snacks, shop early.
AhhBee's Burgers is just down the road from Seastar lane and is great. If you are looking for a venue a bit more special for dinner, Ivan's at Catcha Falling Star is great after 5pm. Even for just a drink it is a great spot for sunset.
We haven't been anywhere on that part of the cliffs I'd call a no go.
If you head to Out of Town Pastry, Just Natural is only a few hundred yards beyond and was a really great experience.
Re: Newbie Advice and Safety
Don't take a route taxi. Trust me on this one. My statement will get an argument started most likely, just don't do it.
Even though you are in Jamaica, and a hamburger seems like the thing not to eat... Go to ahhhbees. It's sublime.
Take extra "little money" (small bills) with you. No one has any change, and you will want it for tipping.
When you are walking out and about, steer clear of the fellow that tries to tie a bracelet to your wrist (to save my life I cannot think of his name right now) he has gotten a bit more difficult in the past two trips... He is usually found on the road around catcha and down past tensing.
Most important? Have fun... The cliffs are a different experience than what you had last year. We are now devoted to the west end, and will probably not go anywhere else on our Jamaica trips.
