Update on the Sidewalk Project
I am a huge fan of the sidewalk project and was disappointed when the work was halted last year. Still, after the retrofitting, even just the Phase One section from Grand Pineapple into town has proven a great boon to many. It is very well used. I love it.
When I arrived at the end of January I noticed that work that appeared to be the recommencement of the sidewalk project was taking place across from Couples Swept Away. I was surprised to see this; I assumed that work would pick up at the G.P. where it left off and proceed north, rather than start at C.S.A. and work south to connect at the G.P.
So today I took a walk up towards C.S.A. to check on the work project that I had observed over a month ago. I’m happy to report that it is indeed Phase Two of the sidewalk project and that it is progressing well.
The Ph. 2 base has been prepared as far south as Chances. There are breaks along the way where infrastructure has to be addressed, ie; ditches, palm trees, boulders, driveways, etc. Apparently they are doing the easy bits first, but the base is coming along nicely.
Parts of the sidewalk have also been poured and laid. The Phase Two sidewalk is of a different design than Phase One. One side of it is the standard sidewalk design (concrete, with regular seams), while the other side is done in a herringbone paver brick pattern. It looks quite nice. The brick is laid on a concrete foundation. It is solid. There are several crews at work.
If they keep working at the same pace, I expect it Phase Two will be completed in three or four months. I’m really looking forward to walking the full length of it on my next trip.

Re: Update on the Sidewalk Project
Any pictures?
I believe they quit for awhile due to aesthetics reasons. As a visitor I could care less about what the sidewalk looks like as long as it is functional. It was way better walking around last year than when we were there in 2012.
Good to hear they are continuing. Pavers on to of concrete should last a long time and remain fairly flat but will never been as smooth as concrete. I wonder why they didn't use a colored or stamped concrete, if it is even available there.
Re: Update on the Sidewalk Project
kool........really appreciate the update as last year it was a bummer for the sidewalk to all of a sudden stop......
now if any sidewalk work ever gets going on the West End Rd then wi will have a party.......
just way too many people don't like walking on the West End Rd......even mi......the beach road was never really a problem

Re: Update on the Sidewalk Project
Kahuna3, have you noticed the quality of the cement work by seaplash , Negril palms area? I think it is superior to the quality of workmanship on the sidewalk closet to Negril. Study it sometime. Different contractors! I'm just saying'. P.s. we are leaving Sunday morning from NTH. I brought my well worn out "Walk Good" book along. And a sharpie pen.....Respect. RnR Farmer
Re: Update on the Sidewalk Project
I noticed the quality of the work is much improved over the southern section - both the brick laying and the concrete sections. The sidewalk bed also seems to be a better pour. But, my only experience is what I've gained from standing out in front of construction projects and critiquing the work that is going on :)
I'll be walking by NTH northbound tomorrow early (6:45 - 7:00) and then southbound 8:00 ish. I'll also wander up there around 3:00 - maybe we could meet up?

Happy to learn of the progress. Thank-you K3

K3. This is Sunday morning ( I tink) grin. We pull out at 10:30 am
Re: Update on the Sidewalk Project
I have taken pictures of the ongoing sidewalk work, and will say the quality of this new section from a different contractor is much improved. The finish of the concrete is much better and the brick work is looking real good. There are even a few workers out there this Sunday morning laying bricks.
