Cottage in Negril - where should I find mine?
Finally got all the required permissions (spousal) and also received our TRN numbers... I have a few places in mind but I'd like to hear some of your out-of-the-box suggestions on finding my studio (cottage) in Negril!
Criteria:
- under $10m JAD
- nothing fancy as it's just for the two of us to sleep and listening to Bob
- nearby stroll for swimming/relaxation away from hustle preferred
- do not want to rent it out, maybe just a friend or two - maybe!
- nearby fruit and supplies (this shouldn't be too tough)
- not too close to tourists, yeah I know I was one of them... but oh so annoying can they be!
I'd appreciate any of your insights and ask me questions if you need more criteria!;)

Meets everything you mentioned . More local contact in my trip recently than any tourists by far . Short stroll down to marys bay mostly used by locals at one end and canoe bar patrons at other . The snorkeling there is great I just use goggles and free dive myself . 100 yards to ocean aprox up on Westland mountian rd. I played my music every am and evening and relaxed with a book nice little safe property . I was worried bout a stray wild bird at night more than anything . Community watch around a lot at corners looking for wanderers. Everything withing walk ing distance everything. Any ? Plz ask

I'm looking to purchase a studio suite, do you know if these are individually privately owned? I've emailed judith@jayshideaway.com to ask same question, thanks for the suggestion.
Edit: received reply to my email, they only do seasonal rentals :S
Re: Cottage in Negril - where should I find mine?
Rocmon...there are not a lot of studio suites in Negril to purchase....I can only think of Point Village, Sunshine Village, Little Bay Country Club (starting prices were around $165,000us), Beach House Villas and maybe Negril Beach Club Condos (not sure of their status at the moment).
Either way I would track down a real estate salesperson (they'll have the most connections) and definitely get yourself a real estate lawyer.

Hey Bnewb, thanks for the suggestions - I've scoped out all but Sunshine Village, I'll check that one out - have you any personal experience owning in Jamaica?
I have a realtor, lawyer and also several private contacts feeding me for sale tips but hoping to hear someone's sale pitch on where they own :)

I don't have a sales pitch for you but I will say that if you're going to be living in Negril...there is no location that would be "not too close to tourists".
Our property is in-country, outside of Negril in a typical neighbourhood/yard...we live here 365 days a year though...not sure if that's what you are planning to do. There are pockets of expat/snowbird locations like the properties I've listed above and just out past the lighthouse, if that appeals to you more.
If you are interested in a single home and land, that can be found also...but might be a bit pricier. Another option that is fairly common is to buy a home or build a home on leased land.

We're planning on a proper hillside villa with some land in a few years but at the moment I just need a place to call my own... "not too close to tourists", well the best fit has been narrowed down and we have decided on the perfect location - we are so excited and have put offers on 2 studio suites! One has been accepted (no paperwork yet, but in progress) and the second is in 'soon come' mode - if you know what I mean!
I'll update on the property location if anyone is interested once we ink the deals.
