Amazon Prime/netflix question
I know, why do we want to watch movies while in Jamaica?
long story short.....we do late at night, and it's a long trip this time.
Does anyone know if Netflix, amazon prime or rabbit TV work in Jamaica. I know I read somewhere that some do not...any experiences out there?
Thanks
K
Re: Amazon Prime/netflix question
on my last late-May trip
AmazonPrime would not let me stream movies
i vague-ly recall getting a *message* saying that the services was disallowed because of some kind of copyright issues, and/or *something* (( ?? ))
an *aside*:::>> let's all pray
that one day (soon),
Amazon will ship-TO Jamaica,
with the same ease that we experience here in good 'ole USofA.
Re: Amazon Prime/netflix question
There is no problem at all with Netflix assuming u have a good internet connection.

I have found/observed that
'''..movie-watching..''
IS a MAJOR evening activity in Jamaica.
on your up-coming trip,
ask some Ja-folks
WHERE you can *get* some movies (aka ''..shows..'')
on DVD's
on my last-trip,
the price was:::>> Ja$100 per DVD.
i dunno how they pulled it off,
but some DVD's had 3-4 movies --- still @ Ja$100/dvd
Re: Amazon Prime/netflix question
On each return home to Jamaica, I bring close to 200 DVDs that friends send me and that record here in So. Florida.
Most people in my town of Accompong Town have a DVD player of some sorts and just about dusk, you see people (mostly youth) busily going house to house looking for something new to watch or delivering a new one to friends or family.
Each return trip to my home, I bring a reconditioned DVD player and leave it with someone when I go. Also, I have an old DVD/VCR recorder and player in my Jamaica home. When I send my one or two barrels each year before returning, I go to a Thrift Store and buy old VCR tapes at about a quarter a piece to burn onto DVDs when I am home. Many of these are Classics and Academy Award older movies that people have never seen. I often have a line at my door for the first week or two when I reach home.
My local neighboring town (Santa Cruz) has several people selling DVDs. Most are the same old Martial Arts movies or American TV shows like "Arrow" etc. with multiple episodes on each disk. I did get a great movie "Lucy" before it came out officially in America. Be prepared for poor recordings from inside movie theaters with backround noises and a person or two going across the screen going to the popcorn stand.
As Smith744 said, many disks have several movies up to about 4 per disk. This can be good if you like all the movies but a major pain when you want to see the last movie only and have to FF or Skip through three movies to get to it. Occasionally they have disks burned with chapters and that makes them easier to play when you want to select only one of them.
I suggest you think of taking several great classic movies down with you to give to friends. A lot of people will get to enjoy them.

Question for Accompong and Smith -- I have complete set of the original Roots TV series and the Roots Next Generation series -- both on VCR (about 6-7 tapes each set) . If I take them to JA would anyone want them? Not sure when next I will get to JA but hopefully next year (currently dealing with some medical issues). If either of you are interested in them, I could mail them to you when next I am in the US (which would probably be easier than mailing them from
Canada?).
Re: Amazon Prime/netflix question
Netflix will work. The content is different than in the states, due to licensing. Prime does not work.
You can easily work around licensing by using an anonymous VPN service like Private Internet Access. Simply connect to the "US Florida" endpoint and you'll get USA content for both Netflix and Prime. I do this at White Sands, which has a very good WiFi connection.

VCRs are pretty rare in Jamaica but there are some around. I know of none where I live and that is why I have to either burn a DVD from them or invite friends and neighbors over to watch them. I have found that a lot of Jamaicans around where I live don't like to go into other people's homes and prefer instead to sit on the verandah so that is sometimes a problem.
I will be sending another barrel down before I leave in early October so you can message me here if you want to donate them to the cause. I work with Mystic Bowie (who is my friend and neighbor in Accompong Town) http://www.mysticbowie.com/ and the Mystic Bowie Cultural Center (where a school library has been built) http://www.mysticbowieculturalcenter.com/ . Donation of books and movies will go to educate and inform the Maroon children.

Accompong - I sent you a PM to get your address.
Re: Amazon Prime/netflix question
There's a communal TV in one of the shops in our neighbourhood with DVD player also...you can sit on one of the benches & enjoy one of the many martial arts movies or westerns..sea spray killed off the remaining VCRs...
