A few pics and memories from the 70's- pt. 2
I think back to my first visit, grabbing a cab for the "trip" to Negril and this was way before the new "highway" was built as the road meandered along the coast through many small collections of houses and through many nooks and crannies and while the road may have meandered, the driver didn't. I learned quickly that pedestrians did not have the right of way as he leaned on the horn as we rounded bends and went over a few bridges that I didn't think one car would make but we squeezed by other vehicles and then picked our hearts up off the floor. I had never experienced anything like this in my life and still love the ride out, although it seems a bit more controlled these days. Finally we rounded the bend and headed down the beach road as time seemed to stand still, the view of the beach through the palm and fruit trees was absolutely breathtaking and that description doesn't do it justice. Only a couple hotels interrupted the view and then a wonderful property along the beach, The West Indies Sugar Company.....

We finally reached the roundabout and were greeted with "need a place to stay" and of course we did. We stayed with Arthur Campbell and his wife Jo in 71 & 73 in Red Ground, his home was just a short way up from the shell station on the right hand side set back behind where the church is currently. As you entered his property there was a pretty tattered block building with a number of benches tipped and strewn about, we didn't think much about this property until we awoke Sunday morning to the sweet sounds of gospel music and only then discovered this was a church and still is, although much larger. We spent a lot of time with Arthur and Jo and introduced them to the Allman Brothers and in turn we were treated to a few jam sessions as friends of Arthurs stopped by and one of them, Sunfacy still plays on the beach, pounding out the tunes on the basebox. We saw him at Fun Holiday last time we were there.

This was taken from their front porch, the church is barely visible on the right.
While on the subject of churches, I don't think Catholicism was very wide spread as I don't think you could fit a dozen people inside

When I first met him he was pretty intimidating but, over the years he is a very gentle man. Is he still looking for a good woman? He was playing at Fun Holiday one night and Xtabi one night and chilin' in Red Ground the rest of the time. I can't wait to get back and could probably retire if I had a dime for every time that statement has been uttered on this site.
