The shocker? #6 Jake's Hotel in Treasure Beach. A few years back we took a tour of the place and although it was rather quirky, it didn't even hit on the radar for places we would like to stay (and could afford). Anyone else have an opinion?
BTW, Conde Nast is a magazine for high end travelers, not that even come close to their normal clientele. A subscription is pretty cheap as the mag must be subsidized by the copious amount of high end advertising.

Bob, my wife and I stayed at Jake's a few years back for our 30th anniversary; she had seen it featured on Travel Channel and wanted to go. It was nice but pricey, I found their restaurants to be very high priced considering the options just a short walk away. We were looking for a few quiet days and we got just that. Stayed for 3 days then back to Negril for a couple weeks. I have no regrets but would most likely pass on a return visit. Since one of our first dates was "The Harder They Come" we had some interest in Jake's history.

We stayed at Treasure Beach Hotel and were very happy with the 2 pools, beautiful view, access to the beach and ocean and lack of people for about $75 per night.
I think it was 1973 when Perry Henzel was doing another movie in Negril and Jim and I got to be extras for a scene on the west end road. We probably ended up on the cutting room floor. If I remember correctly, the movie wasn't put out until many years later.

I have been unable to find it for rent or purchase but I know they used Negril, Runaway Bay and many actors from The Harder they Come were featured. It was lost for several years until found in NYC where they pieced old footage with new filming. I understand it was released the day after Perry Henzell passed away.

hahahhaa, actually I was thinking the same thing "ended up on the cutting room floor" but how cool would it be to see ourselves from back then, in the movie, today, some 40 years later. Wish I knew where to buy or rent the film. I recall us being asked to do the 2 hippies sitting on the wall just up from the old round about poking and eating fruit thing as the big car chase scene drove by us... later i think you followed jimmy cliff down to the light house. where can that movie be bought?

Apparently Jake's has had a lot of remodeling done over the past few years- we ate breakfast there a couple of times and talked with the owner. Their prices are quite a bit higher than the other places we visited while in Treasure Beach this month, but the food, the service, and the location were great. I don't know if this is true or not, but I also heard that the same people who own Jakes, own Jack Sprat. Could be they have Jakes as their high end place, and Jack Sprats as their more budget wise place.

Jakes and Jack Sprat are owned by the Henzell family. Perry Henzell wrote and directed "The Harder They Come" a hard core movie about Jamaica and the Reggae culture of Kingston in the late 60's and early 70's. If you don't know it you should watch it.
Jim, seems there is some confusion, rjonsun is referring to a movie that P Henzell followed up THTC with called "No Place Like Home" partially filmed in Negril. No Jimmy Cliff in that one.
