I’m a long, long time Negril traveler.... 1976. I’ve weathered the gas crisis/road block situation back in the mid 80’s and I’m not one to get hysterical about the runnings. I just want to get a feel for the travel (as in safety) from MBJ to Negril... I’d be coming down with my mom. We love Jamaica!

I'm sure that Rob will weigh in here shortly, but just to beat him to the punch, I'm sure your drive from MBJ to Negril will the same as it all ways was. You might see a bit larger police presents and you might see the odd army jeep, but it is business as usual in MoBay and St. James Parrish. The state of emergency was declared not because it was the wild west in MoBay. It was because of some resent shootings and unrest among local gangs, that the police wanted extra exponential powers to search homes and stop vehicles. No riots and no burning roadblocks. You might even experience a scene of relief from the residents throughout St. James with the high police presents. The only tragedy here is the way the western media portrayed the state of emergency. The Canadian media said that the resort city of Montego Bay was "paralyzed" by a state of unrest. Paralyzed, really,... Hip Strip was crowed, streets had traffic backed up for blocks (as usual), crowds downtown, and the transportation center was jammed. This is not a city that was paralyzed. The Winnipeg media today said that St. James Parrish was in a military lock down. Could Donald Trump be right about "fake media." The Jamaica Tourist board is going to have to work hard correct this one abroad.
I remember hearing years ago, about a local drug lord in Kingston who too control of a housing development, causing a stand off with authorities for an existences period of time. Sounded like something out of the movies. although this seemed like an isolated issue, the media didn't blow it out of proportion like they have with this.

Regardless, for the most part, the international media has not been reporting the situation down here accurately. This is just a case of sloppy, bad reporting.
