Negril wants Government help to protect tourism product

Business leaders in Negril, Westmoreland, want the Government to enact stronger laws to protect the island’s tourism product, including to ensure that all persons seeking to earn from the hospitality do so legally and in an orderly manner.

“What we would like to do is recruit them because some of them are doing things in a way that is hurting the industry, and we need them to understand that,” he said, referring to some persons seeking to cash in on the sector through unsanctioned means, including by offering horseback rides with the animals galloping – at times even racing – along famous bathing beach triggering panic among beach-goers.

The horses are ****ting on the beach and some riders, not all, are throwing the **** off to the edge at property lines, either inside plastic bags or not. Disgusting.

Getting horses off the beach is to me the number 1 safety issue. People lying in the sand and 1000 pound animals run are a recipe for disaster. The rules are so blatantly ignored. Enforcement would be simple. There is nowhere to hide, just look what goes on at Margaritaville.

We just returned from Negril last week and noticed the horses coming by daily.
In addition to being unsanitary, IMO they are out of place on a crowded beach. We will be bringing our grandkids this summer and are safety is our priority!

Just like other things that go on in this world, as long as there is a market, the horses will be here. As long as mommy and daddy want to put little junior up on the seat for a photo op, the horse will be here. The Government of Jamaica did a good job of getting rid of the jet ski's but unfortunately someone had to die first before they stepped in. Maybe Jamaica should do a similar thing with the horses, allow them on the beach but they all have to have insurance and make the fee's so high nobody will want to.

The horse issue has been discussed for many years and nothing has been done about it. We’ll see if anything happens this time.

The last time we stayed at Nirvana, the guy with the horse was using Lazy Days as his turn around point. We were loving the day and the water when the horse dropped a huge load in about 2 ft of water. That spoiled the rest of our day. We couldn't use the sea as the horse $#!+ was drifting by where we were enjoying the surf, very slowly. My wife wouldn't go in until the next day. Crappy situation to be in.
