Old Time Newbie
Hello all. My experience in Negril goes back to 1983 when I taught at Green Island Secondary School for a year. After that I lived and visited Negril for the next 10+ years. I haven't been back since 1994 but I've just booked lodgings at Catcha FS for Dec. 15th.
Now the simple stuff. Do I need JA cash, and is it still being used. If so, how much do you usually bring. How much should I expect to pay for a ride from MoBay to Catcha? Any other useful info is greatly appreciated.

JandT,
Greetings to the Negril Message Board! I started this in 1997, so you have been away since the internet started in Jamaica! Welcome!
You have done a great job by picking Catcha - you will not be disappointed! I am assuming that you meant US cash - JA cash is pretty much the accepted currency island wide. Stores like it.
The current cambio exchange is about 87 to 1. For quick small calculations I use 100 to 1 and consider the difference a tip. A beer is around j$200 at most places now.
The trip to Negril from Mobay is now...... ONLY 75 minutes! YES IT IS! And the cost for most private drives is between us$60 and $80 - gas is now about us$6 per gallon and there is a new Texaco station past the police station on the road to Sav.
Things have changed - there is a Burger King now by the roundabout - but no KFC yet... Traffic is much more busy and there are no more Ladas - but a lot of Toyonda's... (grin)
But you will be comforted by what hasnt changed man...

I forgot that everyone owns at least one cell phone, there is free Wifi all over the place and ATMs work reliably and are plentiful.
