Need a rum seminar?
This is our 1st trip. In Belize 2 years ago there was a local "1 barrel rum" which was good and inexpensive. I tried to search this forum for local rum info and there were about 8,000+ threads to try and read. Maybe someone could just provide the info on acceptable rum in the area. The other problem in Belize (not really a problem) were all the sweet mixes. It was not just the sugar calories but the fear of going into a diabetic shock or something, (They actually had a sugery drink called the "panty ripper which my wife thought was disgusting on several levels - imagine going to the bar and ordering that!) The least sweet mix we found was with cranberry and soda water. Any suggestions?

Re: Need a rum seminar?
Lots to choose from...of course Appleton is Jamaica's local rum or over proof Wray and Nephew....if you want to mix... may suggest Appleton Special or VX mixed with Ting.

Why am I not surprised to see the first reply is from Scott? :)
I think Ting is a good not too sweet mixer.

Re: Need a rum seminar?
Rum with sweet mixers makes me buzzed fast. Unless I want that effect, my preference is with some juice and cut with water by half or more. Often just overproof and water; with a squeeze of lime is nice too.
Have fun on your vacation!!

Re: Need a rum seminar?
AHH, 1 Barrel rum is absolutely superb!! We traveled to Ambergris Caye several years ago and were truly amazed at how distinctive the flavor was. I have mentioned it on this board before. It is definitely worth trying.
A nice smooth light rum, at quite a good price, is Genesis by Appleton. All the Appleton rums are quite good but I am not a rum snob at all. If I like it and the price is fairly reasonable...I'll drink it. With that said, I don't drink rum straight. I mix it with something...so no real need for the really expensive stuff for me. There are so many different rums to be found in Jamaica. Watch out for the overproof....it can give you quite a delayed kick! LOL
Have a great time!

The overproof is definately some kick butt rum!! Not sure if Aqua is open again or not but they did have 60 or 70 different rums there and we enjoyed many there last year and the best was a Venezuelan rum which was great just sipped straight up.

I like a Dark and Stormy. It's rum and ginger beer. I don't like a sweet mixer so the ginger beer is a good choice for me.

Re: Need a rum seminar?
Appleton V/X with a little bit of real juice (orange, grapefruit, anything you like) with club soda and a lime wedge. Sometimes I'll use a little bit of Ting with club soda to make it less sugary. Look out for the sugary "juice" beverages in the groceries or at the bars-- they're SUPER sweet. I prefer to mix my own rum drinks most of the time because the bar drinks are usually too sweet for me, although I make an exception for a good rum punch.
