in your opinion, what is the smartest way to deal with cash in negril? should i just pay for things in american dollars and get my change in jamaican or go to bank or what? i am confused!...and how about using my visa for more expensive meals/bar tabs/souveniers ?

you can use both. I always do. For the vendors on the beach use Jamaican Dollars, most of the time they might not have the correct change. You can use you credit/debit card at some places but I would stick to cash. Just go to the Cambio Downtown or in front of Bourbon Beach and exchange it.
i usually bring small bills( ones and 5's U.S) and also change money at the cambio cross from B.K.. using the visa is easy and it depends on the exchange rate the restaurant uses.
A good rule of thumb is if the price is listed in $J pay with $J, if it's listed in $US pay in $US. This way you avoid conversion hassles. We always bring travelers checks and convert to $J. We also bring $US cash for tips and odds and ends. We do use credit cards for expensive meals and for our room. You can also use your credit/cash card at ATMs just be sure to alert your bank or card issuer that you are traveling so they don't deny the charge.
