Most airlines wont publicize or even acknowledge that they offer upgrades to first class if there are seats and your'e within 24 hours of departure. Usually $125PP.....I've done it a few times.

I keep checking 1st class seats available and try to call 25 hours prior to see if they let me slide.
and with that upgrade, American Airlines allows 3 checked bags, up to 70 lbs per bag.
We've used the upgrade when checking in several times with both AA and Continental (now United). They don't offer it on the return though.
If I'm not booked first class, I upgrade at the airport all the way since AA now charges for bags to JA. I would occasionally before when there was no extra baggage fee, just because it's nice. You have to upgrade each leg if you do it in the airport. Always do this if I'm flying domestic. I've never not been able to get a seat. It can't be done @ the airport coming back from JA unless that's changed. I make sure I'm flying first class on my return when I book (FF miles) for this reason so haven't checked for a while. It's nice for avoiding loong check in lines in MoBay.
been flying AirTran and they have been offering an upgrade to Business Class/First Class for $79 to MoBay..........
you get the perks of getting to check two bags which is a $45 value........
plus big leather seats, complimentary drinks and of course being the first on the plane and off........
when mi head back mi will probably bite the bullet at check in and treat myself since mi got two bags etc next reach.......
now mi will be able to drink and eat a lot on that nonstop flight to MoBay.....lol
usually now mi leave the big suitcases in Jamaica and travel home with just a carryon and personal item since it's not worth paying $20/$25 to check an empty bag on Air Tran......mi can usually pick up a suitcase for $3-$5 at a yard sale here in FL on any weekend

On Airtran, you can upgrade free with 4 A+ rewards. If you have a connecting flight along the way, you go Biz Class all the way IF you upgrade with A+ Rewards.
If you have a connecting flight and are BUYING the upgrade, you have to pay per segment, however your bags fly free all the way. You can also choose which flight you want to buy the upgrade for (price varies by distance)
AA makes it easier than ever to upgrade to first class. Using the self-serve check in kiosk, you will be offered 1st class upgrades, if seats are available. I am kicking myself in the arse for not upgrading MIA-STL.....that was one bad flight....the prices were running 99usd to 129usd per segment....
got enuff rewards to upgrade to Business but I rather save them for a free flight which is only 8 rewards.......
and I'll have 8 after this next reach.........decisions decisions decisions........lol
my flight back this winter going to be one of the more expensive flights if I fly to Tampa so I may use the rewards for that flight.......
the flights on AirTran via Orlando, FL to MoBay are actually pretty inexpensive........as compared to most flights

Thanks for the info, I'm on Airtran in December. Gonna see if I can upgrade when I check in online. This indeed is a money saver if your a girl & can't leave anything at home.
