School Donations
If we bring a big box of stuff for the school can we take it there ourselves? Where is the school located? Will be at Sandals Negril 3/8-3/18, is school in during that time or are they off for break?
Anyone ever look at the cost of just shipping the box to your destination via fedex versus checking it as luggage?
Thanks.

Re: School Donations
We will be next door at Hedonism II from 3/15 to 3/23. We have a group of around 150 people and do a school supply drive every year and deliver everything to a special needs school in Lucea. Last year we collected so much stuff we had to stop at an additional school. If you find nowhere else during your stay to donate your supplies we would be happy to add them to our collection. You would just need to ask for Serena Williams (Guest Relations) or Rusheen Harris (Sales Coordinator) in the lobby and let her know that your donations were to go with the Hedo Amigos Group. I am sure you would have no problem getting through the security gate if you explained what you were trying to do. Regardless...it is awesome that you and others do this! Respect!

Re: School Donations
As a service for the St. Anthony Soup Kitchen, a recognized charity in Jamaica.... here is more information about St. Anthony's Kitchen!
Greetings from St. Anthony’s Kitchen,
Mary Gate of Heaven (Catholic Church) has several Outreach Programs:
Vincent De Paul
Each month, through our St. Vincent de Paul fund, we distribute 40 food baskets to elderly poor and shut-ins in Negril. We also assist the elderly and others with medical and prescription needs.
St. Anthony’s Kitchen
St. Anthony’s Kitchen was founded in April 2010 to serve the hungry poor in Negril. The Kitchen is open five days a week and serves an average of 120 meals a day. The staff consists of several paid employees and volunteers from the local community as well as visitors to Negril.
Get Kids to School Program
Responding to large numbers of children eating at the Kitchen when they should be in school, Mary Gate of Heaven and the Franciscan Friars began collaboration with the children’s parents and the Rotary Club of Negril. With the help of the Rotary Club of Grapevine, Texas, USA, a new Toyota Hiace was donated and serves as a school bus (when not a school bus it is a church bus). A grant from the Franciscan Friars in Western Canada and contributions from benefactors assists 36 children to go to school every day after eating breakfast at St. Anthony’s Kitchen. Get Kids to School program began in September 2011.
Get Kids Registered
Get Kids Registered flowed out of GKTS, assisting children and parents in obtaining birth certificates and other necessary documents.
St. Anthony’s Thrift Shop
Using a spare room next to the Kitchen, gen-tly used clothing is sold to the poor at a small price
There are several ways you can help:
1. Volunteer your time
2. Bring items needed when you next visit Negril
3. Contributions can be sent to Mary Gate of Heaven Church or to the Franciscan
Friars in Cincinnati.
A very special thanks to the Franciscan Friars for ensuring that 100% of your contribution goes to the Jamaican mission.

Re: School Donations
Joe Cool Taxi and Tours will arrange a school visit and take you there no charge.

We are fedexing a couple of boxes to a friend who works at Sangster - pick up when we arrive. We're fedexing the boxes as our airline won't allow us to pay the extra baggage fee to bring them with us.

Re: School Donations
We don't have a school but we certainly are attending to the need of school children. We are St. Anthony's Kitchen sponsored by Mary Gate of Heaven Catholic Church and the Franciscan Friars--and, I might add, supported by the local Rotary. With the Rotary we are assisting 38 children to go to school and the Rotary is involved at several local schools with tutoring and other assistance. We welcome any support and assistance. --Fr. Jim

Re: School Donations
If you are able to bring Yoga Matts for the children that would be awesome. You could drop them off at Negril Treehouse or we can arrange for you to visit the school with the local Yoga teacher who has started the Yoga program at Mt. Airy all age school,it's located right outside of Negril.

Re: School Donations
I would heartily recommend you ask if you can a take morning of your vacation and volunteer at St. Anthony's - they run a breakfast programme (7-8:30ish) for kids only and a lunch programme for all, (both of which you can help out) from 10h30 to 1ish. It is an awesome experience, and you will learn more about the Negril you think you know. Miss Pearl, Beloxi, Velma ... Munday ... all the regulars that work there are truly inspirational. It is a regular stop for us now! They appreciate they help and support. They are connected enough with the schools, that they will know where to send the supplies.
It puts your life in perspective and gives whole new meaning to "Say NO to hunger"!!!!
There are 2 schools I know of in Negril that would appreciate any supplies you can bring (we were told a box of Crayola crayons is about USD12 there ... so do the math, so to speak) - Negril All Age (right on the cliff road) and Mount Airy All Age (a lovely school we had the pleasure of visiting with their principal! What an amazing morning that was!).
Rob may know the organization, as I cannot think of it. But there are a whole slew of hotels in Negril who belong to this organization, and each hotel seems to take a school under their wing, and they publish on their website the school they sponsor and what they need specifically this year - but they will take anything! Just be careful with brining anything that will require battery replacement. I know White Sands belongs to this group, and it's under "about us" on their website. I think. I know Rob will correct this for me. But it's out there!
Bless you for bringing stuff. God knows they need it! We gave one school a soccer ball with a pump and you'd think we'd given them the keys to the kingdom! "We now have a soccer ball for the kids". So little means so much!
