Re: Jamaica's/Negril's Rep?
I tell people that say Jamaica isn't safe that I wouldn't walk down Main St here where I live alone its the same in Jamaica you have to be careful and not stupid!

Re: Jamaica's/Negril's Rep?
I have never not felt safe in Negril. I also would never put myself in situations that could be deemed unsafe.
Like OAngie, I would never walk down Main Street here where I live due to its reputation of being an unsafe place.
I hate it when you hear from people that have friends who's Uncle had a cousin who's step-sister went to Jamaica and were robbed/beaten/whatever and that that has influenced their decision not to go.
Re: Jamaica's/Negril's Rep?
the AI's are the worst Ambassadors that Jamaica has....
their bad news for the likkle guys in Negril
they say stuff like that to keep their guest spending der money with the AI......including tours etc....
and they train der staff at the AI's to tell the guests the same......
this has been a favorite conversation in Negril this winter...it's all about da money
you can't find a friendlier country nor safer country than Jamaica...
especially in and around Negril

Re: Jamaica's/Negril's Rep?
I go to Jamaica for the music, people, food and culture; also sea and sun, since 1984. No where else in the world does it for me. Never have really cared what people say.
Re: Jamaica's/Negril's Rep?
I usually come to find these people have only been to cruise ports and just feel they were hassled too much. I tell them if you're that nervous you probably wouldn't enjoy yourself anyways so don't go, more for me! We recently suggested to our newlywed friends to give it a try so they tried Couples. By mid week they had jumped on the one love bar crawl so they were catching on. The main thing that bothers me is when I tell people I'm going they immediately think I'm going to smoke ganja when in reality its just as easy to get here.
Re: Jamaica's/Negril's Rep?
Been going for 23 years now and it's always been safe for us. One just has to use common sense like anywhere else in the world. There is safety in numbers when out and about. Don't flash money. Don't tell someone you know where you are staying or how long you will be in Negril. Be smart about your drinking and smoking.
We don't travel anywhere else.
