Negril rotary club !!!! Wow
That club is so amazing, the children of Negril All Age school now have a brand new computer lab with new computers. Great work guys and also big up to the all the Rotarians and friends of Rotary that help to tutor the slower kids on a one to one basis to get them ready for GSAT.
Also with the help of the club Mt. Airy now has two brand new classrooms to move into today the start of the new school year. To find out more about what the Negril rotary club is doing for our community drop in at any of their meetings or visit their website to hear about and see all about their projects.
Community building leads to nation building. Keep up the good work.
Re: Negril rotary club !!!! Wow
Congratulations on your service to the children in our community. Thanks, too, for your collaboration with us at St. Anthony's Kitchen wit the Get Kids to School programme. And thanks to the Rotarians who volunteer at the Kitchen on a regular basis! Big up, indeed! --Fr. Jim
Re: Negril rotary club !!!! Wow
I can tell you one thing, the kid that I tutored for a few months last year, Javano, is far from slow. In fact he is one of the brightest, most vibrant and creative children I have ever met. He is a math wizard, the best in his class. He just struggles with reading, and part of the reason for that is because no one speaks English to him in the home or at school and therefore he does not speak any English, only Patoi. The school books are in English. So because of the nature of the Patoi language, connecting the pronunciation of words with the written word is sometimes very confusing. For example, the "h"s and the "th's present a problem. And quite often in Patoi, one puts an "h" in front of a word that starts with a vowel. An egg becomes a hegg, and so on... So I urged his mom to speak as much English to him as possible to get him more familiar with the English that the school books are written in.
E as a ouse in Anover.
Or, He has a house in Hanover.
Nonetheless, tutoring young Javano is one of the really rewarding things that I do in Negril. I urge others to tutor the kids too... someone gave us a shot. Now it's time to give others a shot at life too...

Big pedagogical debate here--should teachers teach using Patois or standard English. For many of the children standard English is a foreign language--and taught like one. You make a good point, Robin! --Fadder JIMaica
Re: Negril rotary club !!!! Wow
I believe in exposing children to as many languages as possible. If they start school speaking only Patois, start introducing standard English bit by bit. Exposure and practice will have students speaking up and reading in no time. My grandaughter (3) speaks primarily English with some Patois and Spanish thrown in, along with our local dialect.
Re: Negril rotary club !!!! Wow
I voluntered @ the all age school `1 yr and noted that the teachers do not speak proper english. i asked if the exam is written in patois...it is not. These children start out with a deficeit not hearing words spoken properly. As a child I had to go to speech class because I could not say the word "scream" correctly. I later noted that I said the word the same way my mother said it...improperly, because that is what i heard.
Re: Negril rotary club !!!! Wow
When they start writing the exams in patio then that should be the language taught. I do agree that children live what they see and hear. In the meantime we have to try to help them as best we can. Again a huge thank you to all who help. Big up to St. Anthony's soup kitchen and the rotary club of Negril. Together we can !!!.
