Ok, so as I read more posts, I am reading about more people having a "sub". In the beginning I was imagining it as a submarine sandwich but am now getting the real idea of what a sub is. Where can I "safely" get a sub?

You are safest getting it from a hotel person - that being said the sub you get at your hotel also stands a good chance of being beach schwag (i.e. sub-par).
On a couple of occasions I have asked the restauranteur where I'm dining if they had any thing above beach schwag I might enjoy for dessert.
On one particular occasion I wound up knee walking backing home thanks to this ploy, but it wasn't beach schwag.
It's a fair question and you'll probably get better answers than mine.
I guess the main thing safety-wise, is develop some level of trust with one of your hotel employees and ask them to get you a bag of subs.
If you don't eat subs often it may even meet your standards.
I get a lot of my subs from Colorado so I'm a bit jaded.
I've had great subs "on da rock", even better than Colorado but those have been isolated instances.
Party on!
You can get good buds. It's not the medical grade hydro from back home, but you can get the sticky.
I use my driver. He knows that I know the difference so he gets me some quality that I can never finish.
Gotta agree with Flip . . ., driver is a good choice, explain that you're a connoisseur and see what happens.
As far as quality, it is definitely there, you will have to pursue it.
Why did my reply disappear? It contained nothing objectionable or at all specific...
TAH must have just had a sub right before posting. LOL
Rum-polephoreskin, you have an interesting name:o
Rum actually came up with the term "sub." This was a few years ago. There is no such thing as true California-style chronic in Jamaica -- ever. But the ganja is above dirt brown seedy Mexican.
Further, it is incredibly easy to find. More than 50 percent of Jamaican males, aqed 18 to 60, will offer it. Most days, if you get around a bit, you'll be offered ten times or more per day. It is EXTREMELY ok to smoke it almost anywhere, and in fact there are more smokers than non-smokers at any given time on the island.
I would say talk to the gardener at the hotel or an older cleaning lady if the have to bring to you next day get a little on the beach till then. I would pick my spots as to where to do it in the open. If your out at a place just ask someone if you can eat a sub most times the answer will be no problem Mon!
It is NOT okay to smoke it anywhere...please be respectful & ask the property owner if no one else is already smoking at an establishment with permission.
And, I would love to know where you got your statistics, Gerry. I would have said completely the opposite...less smokers than non smokers!
Since many tourists still come down here & think that it's legal to smoke here....I'm going to be the party pooper & remind everyone that it still is very much illegal to smoke "subs" in Jamaica.
thank you for clarifying that, BnewB...
what an ignorant comment, gerryg123 ..yu even have statistics and probably have never spent time in any more than 2 or 3 of the 14 parishes...
Gerry,
According to the Tobacco Atlas, only 20.5% of the Jamaican male population smoke legal tobacco.
http://www.tobaccoatlas.org/products...e/males_smoke/
According to the Jamaican MP Dayton Campbell, "A third of Jamaicans have used ganja in any form and 30 per cent of Jamaicans have smoked marijuana with males reporting this three times more frequently than females.
Fewer than a half of reported users are current smokers of the product, but this differs between males and females, with a third of females and a half of males reporting current use. The most commonly reported frequency among current users is daily use, with 9.6 per cent of the population (approximately 50 per cent of current smokers) reporting this frequency and males almost nine times more than among females reporting."

So, according to a government Minister of Parliament, fewer than half of the 33% who have ever used ganja are currently using it at any one time. That would be about 16% for the casual user and 9.6% for the daily user out of all the people on the island. I would think that a Minister of Parliament has access to some rather accurate data, especially when presenting that data for the record in front of Parliament.
That is some 3 million people we are talking about. How many times have you been to places like Mandeville or Kingston?
So Gerry, Bnewb and Ackee ask a good question, where did you come up with your statistic that there are more smokers than non-smokers on the island at any one time?
And so it is absolutely clear to everyone, it is EXTREMELY NOT OKAY to smoke it almost anywhere. And even after ganja is legalized/decriminalized here, it will still be regulated as to where you can and cannot smoke. Just as cigarettes currently are...
Well, everyone seems to smoke it all the time, so that's what I go by ....
Interesting. So you base your island wide statistical statements on the EXTREMELY limited number of the 3 million Jamaicans you have had occasion to interact with? Well, at least everyone now knows how to interpret your view point on things...
The vast majority of people we interact with never smoke it...
G man you studying to be a lawyer and you let yourself get beat up based on crap data. Do not put it out there if you can not defend it.
I saw at 3 dives a family in a rental car that displayed a huge pile of ganja on their table in the open and were rolling and smoking freely. No discretion whatsoever. That is just taunting any police authority to arrest them. No cop could have walked by without doing something. They were told by a sage person that they should take it elsewhere and they did not understand that that is illegal. Use discretion and always ask if you can smoke in public areas. Jamaicans have so little time off I doubt that most would pass that time stoned. The "self employed" or unemployed perhaps would. I know one hotelier who would smack the butt of any employee who smoked, right off her property.
Yea weed is illegal and there is also No gambling in Casablanca.
I guess the Jamaican Rastas dont' break any laws either even though it's part of their religion to smoke.
Yeah,we do go to Jamaica to smoke and I go to Vegas to party and I go to Key West to drink Tequila,so what?
OK, Captain Buzzharsh, what was the O.P.'s question, you know before the thread got hijacked?
Teasing aside, using discretion when you're a guest is always the smart approach.
I think to an extent that's what the O.P. was asking.
She/he was asking about scoring safely, which I think indicates discretion.
Apply the same discretion when using.
When in doubt ask.
I've asked at an upscale (outdoor) restaurant and was told no.
I was glad I asked, and glad I hadn't offended my host.
No problems
Fredstripe strikes again:
"Yea weed is illegal and there is also No gambling in Casablanca."
The perfectly nuanced answer in one sentence.
Nicely played sir!
I pick where I eat based on if they allow people to smoke in the dining area. I'm not going to do business with any place that allow people to break the law and smoke where my taste buds are trying to focus on my meal. So....smoking any where is not cool, it can hurt a business. Except those places that cater to those stinky foreign people that smoke one cig after another all day, prolly could smoke ganja there and nobody would be able to know the difference.
Gee,so if they allow you to UM break the law then is there "really" a law ?
The "real" danger in smoking weed is getting "shook down" by the so called Police as the drug dealer on the beach is selling at the same spot EVERY day.
Fred,
I cant believe I have to explain this to an ex-cop, but there are so many first time visitors and non-posters that read this board (tens of thousands each month) that I feel this needs to be addressed.
If an establishment lets you "break the law" as you put it, that does not change the fact there is still a law. The establishments are not law enforcement officials but they would have to take partial blame for the crime committed on their property.
As with any law, every time that it is broken does not mean that the violator is caught and charged. In your country is every shoplifter caught? Is every robber caught? Is every speeder caught? Is every murderer caught? Everyone knows the answer to this basic question, of course not! The police in any country cannot be everywhere at all times.
Your outdated info on "shakedowns" is just that. Every cop in Jamaica knows that "shakedowns" and "bribes" are being handled harshly. Even a senior superintendent of the police recently was convicted stemming from a single traffic ticket bribery attempt. Check last week's Gleaner and Observer for more. It was headline news for days. No one could miss it.
An $800,000 fine or 6 months in jail is something no cop wants to face over the outdated concept of getting pocket change for accepting a bribe or shakedown. I am sure there are still some practising this, but the numbers who do are down very significantly. There have been articles in the Gleaner and Observer each month pointing this out.
Ganja is in a strange legal limbo area at the moment. While being illegal, it will probably be legalized/decriminalized before the end of the year. Because of this, the cops are in a delicate situation. I have witnessed several different ways this has been dealt with. At times the offender is hand cuffed and led off to the Negril jail. But I have also witnessed the police approach a smoking tourist and they asked them to discard it and reminded them it was illegal. The tourist obeyed without a word and no money was exchanged nor was the tourist even searched. Had there been words, I am sure the outcome would have been different.
This seems to follow the way the police are handling all illegal smoking including tobacco in restricted areas. They are asking the violator to discard the smoke, and given a warning. But it is still up to the discretion of the officer to warn or take further action.
Ganja IS still illegal.
That's a beautiful ballpark! Go Brave's.
Jamaica should "wake up" like America has finally done and start to Legalize what the people want.Remove the criminal aspect,no money for incarceration, tax it to death like they do cigarettes & alcohol & gambling.
Ya know the vices that the Politicians say are bad, bad but they would wilt away financially without those taxes.
Uruguay just legalized it. Portugal decriminalized ALL drugs Ten years ago and we don't hear of any carnage in the streets,do we?
O/K Rob,I will repeat the mantra fr the Newbies,,,Weed is illegal.
I've never seen a tourist "shaken down" by the police in jamaica in 25+ trips. I have seen locals "shaken down" by police many times. Small rum bar proprietors/food vendors on the beach, along norman manley and one love dr. "shaken down" for a drink or a bite to eat. Permits are required but not always obtained (year after year). Young husslers are often "shaken down" when caught smoking ganja openly esp around tourists. A small fine payed on the scene is easier than the hassle of going to negril jail, seeing a magistrate in sav, and then being released with a $1 US fine. Young Jamaicans "shaken down" for smoking on the roof of the jungle for the cost of the officers red stripe (saw this one several times on different trips). I've asked the "victims" about this practice they agree that it is easier to comply with the officers requests (better than a beating/ or worse). But then I've seen a big adult diver a rick's "shake down" the young pickney divers for all their tips at the end of the day. My rasta friends explained to me that the big fish always eat the little fish in jamaica.
Once it is legalized I'm opening a Subway franchise in Negril ;)
Oh lord, thankful for rob and Bnewb for the reality check... Before their post everyone was up for sharing their tips for scoring.
For all those forum members looking at transport and drivers in negril, choose wisely, I wouldn't want a part time dealer driving me around. Look at who recommended who on this board for scoring and driving and cross reference.
In response to Gerry,s comment about being approached to buy weed ten times a day. That's because you and many others are smokers, so you are a ready market for those that are selling. I don't get approached once, and am there a lot, because I don't smoke weed, so no one needs to ask me. It's simple supply and demand.
The only time I have been approached was last year by a older Canadian tourist who had bought too much and was going home the next day. I politely declined.
Smoking it in public places is your risk, but common courtesy should prevail for businesses and other customers alike.
Fred Stripe- if the US have got the cannabis issue right, then you can now stay at home to smoke weed. Save on the hotel and plane ticket. It's very wrong to give the impression that negril, or Jamaica is a weed Mecca. What a disservice to the people who live there.
I have to to agree with much of what you have said, however as far as being approached 10 times a day as Gerry stated, that is completely true. Good ol supply and demand. I hit the beach solo two days ago and was approached numerous times in less than a half mile. His stats are surely off, but his ratios on his last reach we're surely similar.
Regardless, if you choose to partake use a little common sense. Be respectful of those around you as well as the proprietor. Many businesses accommodate as not to upset their customer.
