bummer
That a pity when we were there in April it was so quite it was great
Really?? No plan has been given or facility to legal owners yet? Where are they going to operate from? The Watersports assn / which I am a member has not been notified, go figure. The plan was to operate as a group from Negril Beach park as a group. Keep the ban on !!
I was saddened to read this, we really enjoyed the beach without them and it seems like there are still a lot of details that haven't been worked out (per Gail's post)
Ugh, nooooooo!!!
Yeah, that really sucks.
Gail, the Last paragraph in this article is of interest to you: http://www.eturbonews.com/48094/jama...lifted-july-18
yes, I agree with Gail ! if they are going to operate then there must be tighter reins & areas to safely operate. I did enjoy the peace & quiet while walking the beach, not to mention all the sea life that returned. Tough decision either way. My vote would be for Peace & Quiet....always be Irie Andy !
April was so peaceful without them.
In a couple of days - Gail or anyone else there currently, please let us know if there are differences in the in the way they are operating; Are they only coming in and out at the public beach? Are they pulling up to people in the Swim Zones? Fewer of them? Are there other noticeable differences?
Oh how I was looking forward to the the quiet in August...was hoping to sneak one more trip in before the PWC's returned.
I live middle of the east coast on the eastern shore of va. I have several very popular beaches within anywhere from a 5 minute drive to a hour away including assateague island, virginia beach, and ocean city. All of the beaches mentioned above are tourist destinations and get very crowded and are very noisy. From the jet/rocket boats just offshore to the constant planes flying overhead with the banners. Heck if you go virginia beach you even have the military jets screaming over your head every hour on the hour as there are several military bases in the area, but despite this the beach was rated in the top 10 best beaches in the US by tripadvisor. Noise at the beach i am use to so i dont really mind the jet skis, to me they are no more annoying or louder then the constant hagglers yelling at you to buy something. My main concern is the same concern i had with the damn horses running up and down the beach on my last reach...safety. I in all my trips to negril have always said the same thing, there may be rules and regulation in place but nobody follows them because there is nobody to enforce them. Just look at the new sidewalks, seem more like parking spaces then an area to walk, already turning black in places from tire marks. If jet skis are brought back (and it seems inevitable), then enforcement is whats needed. You operate without a license your jet ski is confiscated, you speed or ride up the beach in a unapproved area you lose you jet ski and your license, you hurt somebody by not following the rules you lose your jet ski, your license, and your freedom. If the powers that be really want a change just dont make more rules nobody is going to follow, put in some funding for a few officers to walk the beach to enforce the law and make the penalties severe.
And i forgot, do something about the damn horses who at time seem to run loose....it is only a matter of time before somebody gets seriously hurt.....respect onthecorner
Yesssssss!!!! We will be ready to ride the jet skis next month! So glad they are back....looking forward to some wave action and feeling the breeze blowing by!
"f. PWCs must observe the collision (at sea) regulations"
Are you kidding me?
Love your second ticker cap.
My understanding from another site, is the ban is only being lifted for private use, not commercial. Sorry, Oxford, unless you own your own...no jet ski.
Sorry Barb....come on down and smell my exhaust....lmao!!
And, I own two of them.
You own 2 in Negril?? Hmm...
Going to be on island for the Thanksgiving Day cowboys game.
As a deep west person and a beach visitor, all I can say is, I don't like and would never use a Jet Ski. I hope that Negril will have enough police/marine authorities to control the smelly, noisy things.
We really enjoy riding the fun, fast machines. It's one of the highlights of our trip. I just hope that everyone rides safe and be very careful about whats in front of you. jet skis are fun!
Having to choose between jaherring's exhaust and Gail's Zen Paddleboards would be a no brainer. Maybe a Jetski centre at the Negril wharf and extreme limitations on operating distance from shore would be a compromise.
[COLOR="#800080"]The devil is always in the details.. Like the IRS non-profit "Scandal" where "exclusively" was changed to "primarily". Deception of intent is often masked in language of the rules and regulations. Here is a part of the new rules.
A channel 20 to 40 meters wide CAN be opened on Negril Beach if it is NOT in "close proximity" where members of the public customarily swim. But it goes on the state "where PWC operations will be prohibited".Quote:
A launch site refers to an area on the foreshore (a channel between 20 and 40 metres wide) through which PWCs are permitted to leave and return. PWCs will be launched from such sites in accordance with specific guidelines and recommendations which include - the existence of a ramp or other suitable area for the safe launching of the PWC and erection of prescribed signage.
Launch sites will not be established in close proximity to high risk areas such as places where members of the public customarily swim. These include the Blue Lagoon (Portland), licensed beaches, public bathing beaches including in Negril, Montego Bay and Hellshire Beach, where PWC operations will be prohibited.
Now, members of the public don't "customarily swim" at the mouth of the Negril River so can it be opened there? Using phrases like "close proximity" and "customarily swim" are only added to confuse the matter.
I think there is a place for the PWC but just not on Negril's Beach.
Just my opinion.
Dash,
That is exactly what is planned for Negril. There is no lift of the ban in Negril.
To all,
This thread seems to becoming a bit "combative" for no reason. The commercial operator ban has not been lifted in Negril, nor most other places on the island. Only the use of your own personal "water craft" from their private residences has been lifted. Personal owners had also been banned from use and their issues have been dealt with - but the commercial ban in Negril and other places will remain in effect as I mentioned months ago until the proper, adequate rules and regulations are in place. To quote a part of the story linked above in case some didnt read it:
"Minister McNeill said “guided by the recommendation of the Task Force, it was determined that the suspension of private PWC operations for licensed PWC users should now be lifted, as adequate measures and regulations have been put in place.” He added that “the owners and operators of private and commercial launch sites will be required to inform the MAJ of these sites to facilitate the effective monitoring of the activities across the island.”

Acc,
The "Devil" in this case may be that the details that the Task Force has defined were not stated in exact distances in the article quoted. The journalist could have gone into the Task Force guidelines and found out how they defined "close proximity" and "customarily swim" but apparently chose not to do so, feeling their comments were adequate for the readers.
However, they seem to agree that the "public bathing beaches including in Negril, Montego Bay and Hellshire Beach, where PWC operations will be prohibited." That is a pretty firm detail they outline in their regulations.
I agree with you even though I can't stand jet ski's I know allot of ppl do and the Jamaicans who run them make good money doinfg so
Thanks Rob,
That is why I put it out there. I thought there was a lot "more to the story" and I figured someone (especially YOU ;) ) would set the matter straight.
You know, a lot of people just think of Negril as all there is in Jamaica and don't go past the town limits. I think that Chukka Cove has horseback riding and it is not in Negril. It is not necessary to mix swimmers and sunbathers with horses any more than PWC should be allowed. Jamaica is roughly the area and shape of Connecticut so there is a lot of area where concessions for renting can be established for these purposes and that will give people a good reason to get out and explore a little of the island at the same time.
Thanks again.
Peace and Guidance
on Friday when mi was doing mi last leg of snorkeling into Pee Wees.....
mi heard this unfamiliar noise......it was a jet ski......couldn't believe it.....ugh
mi was told the driver was licensed and thus the jet ski off the Cliffs.....
mi always worried about getting hit by one of dem jet skis.....or boats......
but the boats move slowly and thus usually not a danger to mi.....
Cool Runnings, Marko
pollution pumps.
Actually, they pollute very little if any. The glass bottom boats and fishing boats pollute more. We are going to have some form of pollution until the end of time. Life is short, get up, get out, and enjoy!!
they pollute very little if any
much like sidestream cigarette smoke, which poses no danger to others beyond a distance of a couple of feet, the noxious smell of the jet skis isn't actually harmful to one's health unless one is very close to them. but that doesn't make it significantly less annoying.
We also enjoyed our visit without them. I was bummed the first day and found out but that quickly changed with the quieter beach. If someone wants to make money let me suggest selling cold bottled water and a coffee bar on the beach.
Tree house? How about it? Coffee bar at the bar 6:00am - 9:00am
TAH, agree with you that Jet skis have no place near the populated beaches. I would however suggest that they are not the polluters that everyone thinks. The amount of oil it takes to produce the electricity that powers Negrils air conditioners should be more of a concern than an immense fleet of Jet skis. Jaherring, quit trolling. You'll get your ride one way or another.
