We're in the mountains above Green Island in Hanover- 30 minutes from Negril- best of both worlds!

wow
Ok, share the info. lol Very very nice place!!!
Oh Smith! One of our neighbors picked and sold us coconuts so we had them every day. "Cleanses the Heart" we were told so feeling pretty healthy right now!!!
And yea very lucky! Love our place and mountain neighborhood beyond belief. Other than a couple guest houses for tourists, our neighbors are all local Jamaicans, many work at the resorts and tourist places. We stayed 3 months and only went to the beach in Negril 4 times.

deja vue ???
i was gonna post a query 'but that cleanses the heart
and/or
''.. go straight to the heart..''
thing-y that *they* always say/tell.
me no know what THAT means.....
BUT I-TOO DO do my best-est to drink/eat at least one of them things EVERY-day.
...makes me feel better than *normal* when i do
Ok I love bragging about this house so my apologies if my pics and posts run long.......
And I will tell you that life here takes a bit more effort than life at a resort or bigger town.
For instance we have 1000 gallons of water in tanks on our roof because the "pipe" is sometimes dry for a few days at a time.
And we have a septic system instead of sewers.
And our street is a deeply rutted trail that makes driving in a car tricky so few taxis venture up this far.
And electricity go's out a bit more often than in towns.
And taking a shower feels like a dip in the ocean because there's no water heater (although it feels refreshing so maybe its not a negative- lol).
But none of that matters compared to life here.
Two nights ago I got up for a glass of water about 4am and this was the view from the kitchen window.

Sorry if its fuzzy- cruise ships at night are hard to get with a small camera. The dots of light in the foreground are a bar in
Green Island
And yes it is temporarily available until we return in a few weeks. It's our residence but there are plans with our next door neighbor to add to his house and ours in the next year or so. There will be guest rooms available permanently in the future. Our neighbor is a Jamaican who has worked in the tourist industry for over 20 years and is excited about bringing tourism to the mountains where it is much needed and appreciated.
.
hey,,
got a question::>>> HOW did you handle '''..laundry..''
over those 3-months....???..
Laundry was an issue because wringing clothes is rough on arthritic hands so I hung pretty wet clothes that never dried..... ever......
Luckily there is a neighbor who does laundry for $2500 (j) for a big bag.
Also got a old fashioned washer with a spinner but it doesn't work well.
I highly recommend my neighbor- she does a great job.
More pics of mountain life.......

Thanks Vince.
Dreams come true sometimes.
Being retired gives us the time to do something and we feel we can help make a difference in our little community. In addition to the guest room plans, we are going to organize "bar-hopping" runs to the many tiny wooden bars around us.
Mountain bars are popular hangouts for locals and visitors are warmly welcomed too.
You might:
Have animated conversations about life- everything from soccer to racism to US politics and Donald Trump
Watch a loud game of domino's- join in if you dare-lol!
Watch as someone pours overproof on the floor and a Rasta blesses and dances around the flames.
Madly dance to Marley or modern music and later realize you were the only tourist there.
Repeat at as many bars as needed- lol.

What a beautiful dream!!!
Please let us all know when your bar hopping run is available. I would absolutely love to see your community and I would feel most privileged to see a Rasta blessing and dance!
Also, I feel your pain with the snow....ours is supposed to be here tonight.
Cool runnings!
Years if ever. There's a lot of stalled building projects. Food and clothing take priority- many of my neighbors live in them and do a tiny bit each year. The one in the picture seems empty. And the boy is one of my many "grandkids". School is not a priority either when food is scarce so at 7 years old he is still working on learning his ABC's. His father works construction but as you know wages are way too low here.

How can you walk away from these sweet kids!
They melt my heart.
Guest Rooms are in the plans as well as the yard is going to be planted with a huge veggie garden, more fruit trees and lots of herbs and things. The yard slopes down a long ways before yielding to a bamboo forest.
beautiful place. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to hearing about future developments.

Dogs, Cats, Chickens, Mongoose, or Goats. Never know what you will see on a stroll.
Wish I had some bird photos but they move too much. We see big green parrots, egrets, hummingbirds including "doctors", and many more.
No idea how the little frog got in our shower?????
Please keep the pictures coming!! lol THANK YOU!!
First off, this whole post is just stunning. I'm seriously impressed with your setup there. Please do keep it coming, and update us on the guest rooms as you make progress.
Now, as to that picture I included here; I see this a lot, and I really disapprove of Jamaican framing techniques. I'm a construction guy, and seeing a beam spliced like that just sets off my inner YOU CAN'T DO THAT monologue. They should always splice on a post, no exceptions. Sorry for the tangent, I can't help myself sometimes.
Wonderful pictures, great spot you have there.
Weird, it did show up in my post but now it's just the link. If you click the link in my comment it'll take you to that picture. It's of the gazebo type structure looking out at the water. The "carrying beam" that the rafters rest on (which is just a flat 2x4, that's not great either) is spliced with another 2x4 by nailing them together with yet another piece of 2x4. It is weight bearing, and you shouldn't ever have a joint like that except for over a post. You can see the deflection in the beam. I realize it has held up, and I see this all over Jamaica, but it's a bad idea. Doesn't cost much (if any, a few dollars at most) more to avoid that if you plan your materials carefully.
LOL. I saw that too and just chalked it up to the norm. Load carrying beams need to be installed vertical, not horizontal as you have called out. I particularly enjoy looking at the electrical work as I'm walking the hood.
OP,
Nice work on living out your dream. Looks like you have a great set up in the hills.
.
ok
don't see an orphan-ed link
but think i unna-stand
As soon as I got home and told my wife "I found the place in da hills!!" I told her that is my dream a decent size place up in da hills in a small community with very nice neighbors that look out for each other. And still have the view of the wata by living high up in da hills. A road less traveled is nice too! :) Thank you for sharing your dream, that one day we will get! Work hard for your dream in Jamaica!
