WiFi or a data plan...

If you turn on airplane mode, you won't be able to use WiFi (or whatsapp).. So turn off mobile data, but keep WiFi on. No charge to use with WiFi.

Airplane mode does automatically turn off your WiFi, as well as cellular voice, data, Bluetooth and most likely GPS.

But you still can enable your WiFi as usual while you stay in airplane mode to keep your phone from roaming charges.
