I’m a city boy, so I don’t know, but does a rooster need it’s voice box to help produce eggs? Maybe just a little duct tape strategically placed.

chickens and goats are the best!!!

i grew up in eastern long island in the 70s/80s and our across the street neighbors had chickens. it was funny because we did not live in the country at all, but in a recently built housing development. back then, things like keeping chickens in your yard weren't regulated. i'm sure that wouldn't fly today.

but i also remember in the early/mid 90s in negril, when herds of goats roamed the cliffs road from beginning to end. you don't see that anymore, at all.

I live on eastern Long Island now and live animals, but I value what little sleep I get. A few of my neighbors have horses, and one even has a rooster. Luckily it’s not close enough to hear from inside the house.
My sister runs a charity that raises goats. They’re a blast, but you wouldn’t want a male within half a mile during mating season!!
I guess I have a case of NIMNBY. Not in my neighbors back yard!

It's like trains for me. No one wants to live by the tracks but I did for years and not only got used to the sound but had trouble sleeping when the CN went on strike for a month, too quiet. In JA we can here the tree frogs and roosters and we find it soothing, the only thing that can be irritating to us is the rice rockets first thing in the morning. We've learned a room a little further off the road is a gem.

That reminds me of the time I was looking for a short term apartment to bridge the end of a project & the start of a new one in a different city. I found a small apartment annexed to the local train station. I was literally sleeping next to the tracks. It was fine weekdays, having to get up early and all. Weekends was a whole other story...

i woke up every morning to a goat bleating to get out and eat and someone yelling "shut up" i later learned he was being fatting up for christmas! i bet if her knew that he wouldn't be in such a hurry to eat!

You can have eggs without a rooster, we do. Just no fertile eggs that would hatch. Roosters protect the flock and have different calls for many uses. Warnings of danger, keeping other roosters at bay and just plain old messaging. Chickens are dumb and roosters keep things running smoothly.
Traditionally brown stew was for the old roosters and old egg layers that are tough and stringy. Fried and other types of fast cooking would be young chickens of both sexes.
