Re: FYI bringing wood carvings back to Canada!
The Asian long-horned beetle is a large beetle with very long antennae. In Ontario, the only area that has been affected by this beetle is the north end of Toronto, into Vaughan. They are a serious pest of trees, especially maples. During the larval (immature) stage, they bore deep into a tree's heartwood, where they feed on the tree's stored nutrients. The tunneling damages and eventually kills the tree.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (the branch of the government that deals with invasive species) has successfully quarantined the Asian long-horned beetle since 2004 in the Toronto/Vaughan area. The beetle is not highly mobile and doesn’t spread rapidly as long as infected wood isn’t moved.
