That seems to be the going rate. Pay through the nose or go through the time and trouble of a very long travel day with at least one stop. I guess that's the point the airlines are making. I even see flights from South Florida going to Atlanta or Dallas Fort Worth even Chicago and then to MoBay or Kingston, an hour away!! Here in the states the prevailing thought process is no sense makes sense.
As johng says, it's all about money and that means hubs. If you don't live near Atlanta-Charlotte-Houston-Miami or one of the few others, you're usually screwed.
Oh for the days when Air Jamaica was direct from Boston to Mo Bay and the Champagne upgrade to 1st class was pocket change.....
I remember two years ago deciding that I would fly Air Jamaica for the first time in many years from JFK to Kingston non stop. The only problem was the flight departed at 5:00 am which meant I had to get to the airport at 3:30 which meant staying overnight at a hotel close to the airport. After getting to JFK with my 2 bags full of stuff for friends and waiting in line for about 40 minutes was told that the flight was cancelled and the next flight was the next day at the same time (24 hours later). This was not an option and I told the lady at the desk that, after some back and forth she endorsed my ticket to American for a NYC-Miama-Kingston flight which departed in about an hour from that time. I had to drag the two bags on the Air Tran and get to the American terminal wait in line again and hope that I made the flight. Luckily I made the flight and after a brief layover in Miami made it to Kingston a few hours after the AJ flight should have arrived. Before returning to NY a week later I tried calling the Air Jamaica office in Kingston to confirm that my return flight was indeed going and would be on time. I tried calling about 30 times and always got an answering machine. Air Jamaica has been taken over by Caribbean Air out of Trinidad and Tobago so I drove to the CA office in Kingston and waited for about an hour until I finally spoke face to face with someone. Yes my seat was confirmed, yes the plane would leave on time. I get to Norman Manley Airport at about 4:30pm in plenty of time get through immigration and head up to the departure lounge. The airport in Kingston is very impressive compared to the past and at least while I waited it was comfortable. Long story short my boarding time came and went, numerous messages over the loud speakers, it was beginning to look like this flight was not going to happen. I had a very important meeting at work the next morning and in many ways my job depended on my presence. I approached the lady at the CA desk and after 20 minutes of pleading she got me on an American flight that got me to JFK ay about 1:30am the next day. The Air Jamaica that I remembered, Love Birds, Fashion Shows, Rum Bamboozles, was nothing more than a distant memory. Sad but true!!!!
If you have time to spare, fly Caribbean Air :)
Johng**** Jet Blue has great non-stops from JFK???? Prices also? All into MBJ...I usually fly out of Newark but since JFK was so much better with flights (terminal also) we drove the 2 hours????? Just booked Dec non-stop (always) so YeeHah...I wont reveal the dates because I'm a wanted man, fugitive, vagabon,Kool Jerk McGurt.
Me thinks Johng is not truthful?
Fred Stripe,
Your implication that I am not truthful is not true. I sometimes like to fly somewhere without having a six month window to pick and choose. I've priced numerous flights from the NYC area to MoBay and Kingston. For example JetBlue in mid July Thursday departure, Thursday return close to $700 + bucks. Yea maybe if you catch a sale, buy the ticket now and fly months down the road you can book a non-stop for a decent price. So if Ye thinks I am not truthful that's your problem but if you spent the time to look into what I've said you would find it to be true. Have a few more Red Stripes Fred!!!
Give me your dates and flexibility and I will find you a good deal from JFK with no problem? If you want to leave ext week you will "never" get a good rate.Six months is actually short compared to flight prices? I apologize for saying you're untruthful, but if you can't get a good deal from Jet Blue from JFK????? They have like 6 non stops every day?
