Re: It's raining Canadians!
I don't know if I'm doing my math right we have about 300,000 Jamaicans in Canada. It seems that the US has about 900,000. Larger number for us when you look at our population of >than 30 million and US 300 million.
Did you know you have 1 million JAs in the USA and JA has only 3 million people total.
-
Re: It's raining Canadians!
And, when I mentioned the 177,000 Jamaicans in Toronto, our population for the Greater Toronto Area is 4 million .. so we are not that small lol and when they move the snow .. they move it. We are a mini New York :-) only with over 100 cultures .. not sure how many in New York?

Your not nuts lol..... but yr right, many Canadians come to JA, mostly Negril.... and some of us are blessed enough to LIVE here :)

Flip, with your incredible sense of humor and affable personality I do believe you would be warmly accepted as an honorary Canadian... If not, Minnesota will gladly accept you. Could use a little of that Philly feist infused in our youth hockey program...

Re: It's raining Canadians!
This Canadian first went to Negril in 1997 and loved it. Loved it so much we now have a "made in Jamaica" daughter as a result, haha.
We loved everything about Jamaica and Negril, especially the weather (coming from Western Canada eh?!) What intrigued us the most was how friendly the people are and the "One Love" mentality - I wish everyone would adopt that.
Talked endlessly about returning over the years but didn't until last year (after a 15 year absence) and it was still the same. The area was built up more, more hotels and restaurants but the whole atmosphere was the same - that's something you just don't find in any of the other Caribbean islands, believe me.
There are lots of other islands we'd like to see, and we will one day, but for now we'll be returning as many times as the Good Lord allows. It's our paradise.

Not sure if I told you. *and thanks for the kind words* but o played 2 summers up in Detroit Lakes. I sucked. Tretiak was the goalie coach there though.
-
Re: It's raining Canadians!
As a wise former NHL er once told me when lamenting the state of his youth team " They are 12. They ALL suck" . He wasn't ripping them, but merely realistic that they are supposed to be learning and loving the game at that age.
Flip, are you a goalie or was Tretiak just the marquee name? Pretty cool to be around a guy like that no matter age or position.
-
Re: It's raining Canadians!
Nah. I played center. Tretiak was the name. He was nice as hell to the skaters. Hard on the goalies. LOL

Wow, this thread is so cool eh? Love Trailer Park Boys!

Re: It's raining Canadians!
I love raining Canadians! The Franciscan Friars in Western Canada support our Get Kids to School Program, donating USD$15,000/year. Several Canadians are sponsoring a child in GKTS at about $700/year. One Canadian sends CAD$400/month in support of GKTS. A Canadian (Debbie Lightheart--my favorite biker babe in the whole world) oversees the school/church bus and more. And the list goes on.... A BIG UP from me to our Canadian friends. They are incredibly generous in assisting the poor here in Negril, especially the kids! --Fadder Jim
P.S. I lived next door to Canada most of life. I'm a Buckeye and we share a border with Canada!

Just my take on this. I say Canada or western Canada because saying Saskatchewan most often produces a "deer in the head lights" expression.

Re: It's raining Canadians!
As long as our $ stays at par with the JA @ 1-100 we are happy. It's the US we won't be visiting as frequently. JAs accept Canadian $$, US and Euro on the beach. I put a $20 down and get $2,000 worth of drinks .. and that's enough for a round at the bar :-) When you buy a drink for a JA, the bartender is pretty happy.

I can say it, have a good handle on where it is but if asked to spell I may give you a deer in the head lights look, then short circuit. When in Negril, no math or spelling. It's a survival mechanism.

Re: It's raining Canadians!
This is a fun post! Some observations:
Somebody asked if this a hockey forum. If you're talking about Canadians, it's gonna run to hockey eventually. That's just who we are. You can't talk about Canucks without hockey coming into the convo.
In a playful mood: Tim Horton's versus Dunkin Donuts? Comments anyone? (TeeHee)
Bless you, Buckeye (I wanna hear what's behind that name!) for not knowing what a "SUB" is. I provided a lot a laughs to a previous thread with my ignorance on that! Apparently it has nothing to do with the product of Subway! It has to do with self-rolled, smokable items made with tobacco and some of JA's local herbs! 'nuff said!
Reading thru this, I got to thinking about Road Hockey. Another version of our Favourite Pastime. A road hockey game on the Cliff Road! Giving a whole new meaning to - and decibel level to - CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone game?
I am Canadian. I do not drink beer (there is a special section on our Passport applications for non-beer drinkers, that needs to be notarized, but, I am Canadian ... eh?) and while I love Jamaica, the people, the vibe, the music, the culture - it is the weather I go back for. The other stuff are plusses. I mean, really? Some have posted 'it's not for the weather". Well, it is for me. When you live in a country with 9 months of winter and 3 months of poor skiing - it's the weather that is the ORIGINAL draw. You could take the Jamaican vibe/culture/food/people/music and put it on Baffin Island .. and I am not sure how many of us would go there, versus Jamaica! Probably not a lot - certainly not moi! And NOT in February! (we have gone regularly in summer, and it's awesome! I highly recommend it!)
I am from Quebec and if you hear me say 'aboot", I am probably talking about protective footwear that I have to wear November to ?????? (somebody tell me when I can wear my flip flops!!!!) . They keep my toes from falling off!
If it's raining Canadians, be happy! We are warm for the first time in 3 months and not freezing our Royal Canadian Nay Nays off!
We drink good, we are happy. We love where we are and who we are with.
I do say "eh" a lot. But that's OK.
I AM Canadian! Eh?
-
Re: It's raining Canadians!
Someone from somewhere in Canada definitely says aboot. lol. "I'm from.... name the province .... I dont say aboot"
haha

Re: It's raining Canadians!
I would say at least half the tourists who stay at Seastar Inn are from Canada, partly because Chris Tomney is originally from Winnipeg.
I love Canadians, though it's too bad they can't keep up with Californians drink for drink at the bar -- ha ha, just kiddin'.
I think a BIG reason they love Jamaica is the direct flights. You can't do that from Los Angeles, and it's a pain to suffer through layovers every trip. There are only a handful of US cities that fly directly to Montego Bay, and that's why a lot of tourists instead go to Hawaii or Mexico.

Re: It's raining Canadians!
I paid $480 for a return ticket taxes included from Toronto on WestJet. April6-14, I booked mid Jan.
I just checked today and Air Canada was $520 return. Canadian $
That might explain part of it.

Jamaica is special, that's why we love it :) The direct flights help, but we can also fly direct to Mexico, DR and Cuba and that's just from our little airport. We might pay more than Americans for our flights, but we seem to have a lot more direct flights to choose from...

That's more than I pay round trip from Detroit. There's always a connection, nothing direct, but seems a lot more reasonable.

Re: It's raining Canadians!
I feel very lucky only 3hrs and 40 minutes non stop from Chicago about 400-450 rt. It makes it very easy to go and go and go, you get the point
-
Re: It's raining Canadians!
I think Chicago might be the most remote direct flight from USA.
-
Re: It's raining Canadians!
Direct flights from Saskatchewan - good luck with that. When we flew to MoBay in Dec 2013 it cost over $1500 each return, plus the cost of a hotel in Toronto overnight. It's funny how it seems people from Ontario have an attitude they are the only place in Canada.
As for Canadians being friendly, well on a previous trip we had an overnighter in Minneapolis. We ended up spending a few hours at the mall of America. Without question, in every store we entered, the sales staff were so pleasant and friendly I wanted to puke LOL. Seriously, we have met countless people from Minnesota while in Negril, and they remind me of us prairie Canadians. No attitude and fun to hang with.

Re: It's raining Canadians!
Couldn't agree with you more sandman66. Our last trip home was with Delta via Atlanta. I was so impressed with the leave of service and the politeness of all the American people we encountered. So much so that I leaned into am airport screening agent and told him that Canadian airport security could learn so much about being pleasant from you Americans. Just having an english speaking agent was a huge plus. Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-foreign language, but getting yelled at by an "english as a second language" security agent in Toronto, for not standing in the right spot, just doesn't work for me.
Sandman66, for your next trip, consider flying to Winnipeg instead of Toronto. WestJet has direct flights from Winnipeg Saturdays and Wednesdays, Air Canada Saturdays, and Sunwing has direct flights Wednesdays.

???? Did I say everyone in Canada gets direct flights??? We do, that's all I said. We have dear friends in Alberta who have to connect through TO and pay a LOT more than we do from the east. Didn't mean to upset anyone...
-
Re: It's raining Canadians!
I'm at a loss for words.
English as a second language. Are these French Canadian Security guards?
-
Re: It's raining Canadians!
no, every other culture though, soon come

Re: It's raining Canadians!
Toronto to MoBay 4 hours direct, been lovin it for nearly 30 years.
-
Re: It's raining Canadians!
I'm from the states, but my mom is French Canadian from a little town 3 hours north of Quebec city in the middle of nowhere. My wife, who I met when she went to grad school in New Haven- her father grew up in the little English speaking town right next door from my mom's, but they never knew knew each other. After spending much time with with family on both sides - my take on Canadians of various sorts is they are nice, polite, thoughtful, civilized, and pleasant, until, of course, they pick up a hockey stick.
Since the only ice found in Jamaica is in a rum punch- they are therefore quite safe to interact with.:D

All I know is being from South Carolina when anyone north of the Mason Dixon says "about" it sounds like "aboot" .... and I am allowed to talk about accents as being made fun of regularly for mine allows me that freedom! It wasn't meant as a cut, I promise. Sorry if I wadded some panties on that one.

Re: It's raining Canadians!
As someone who was born in Jamaica, moved to Britain as a child for 5 years, returned to Jamaica for 20 years, emigrated to Canada(been here 22 years) and is married to a French Canadian, I have learned that there are more similarities between people of all nationalities than differences. You really cannot generalize. My parents taught me that as a child and it's so true. Canada has become a melting pot (my two best friends there are from Hong Kong and Mexico) and in talking to my Canadian friends, it seems that the friendly, more laid back culture in Jamaica is a big draw. Canadians are as patriotic as Americans, just lower key. Jamaicans love their country and culture, and are happy to share that with all visitors who show interest and respect. My husband and I have made many friends over the years that we met at the resorts in Negril, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Kingston We spend part of our stay at the beach and part of the time in Kingston to see family and friends. My friends think my husband might have been Jamaican in a previous life as he has grown to love the country, food, culture and people so much!:) There is good and bad everywhere. Keep an open mind and we'll all learn a lot about each others country and culture.
