i just did a quick google-thing-y::::>>> dem-SAY::>> Jamaica is an ISLAND..!! ..... ergo 'tis SURROUND-ed by water, na tru
...'tis 145 miles long & 50 miles long
* whew *
dats a lot of beach front [ I *think*]
.....plenty beach-front for residents to use and enjoy
now dem can't use Sandles, Beaches, Rui, etc etc beaches ... but they can use the rest of the island ..... and there're a whole heap of official and proper beaches on-island. In fact, I know of at least 3-4 public beach areas, right there in Negril.
an observation:::>>> except for major holidays, not that many residents use the beaches ---- not sure why.
perhaps,
it's because they to busy-busy working and doing other Ja-life-things
kinda-sorta like here in good 'ole USofA WashingtonDC :::::: we got plenty plenty free stuff all over town, and the DC-locals don't go check 'em out. 'Twas just the other day, I asked some of my neighbor folks:::>>> ''...have you [and your family, with pickneys, been to see the MLKing memorial..??''
dem-SAY:::: ''.. No .''
:-(
the thing-y been der for quite a few years now
* sigh *
so it goes
ummmmmmmmmmmmm
on your next-trip:::>>> check out those public beaches in Negril, on a week-day,,, and see how empty they are
.

.
oh
oh
oooooooooooooh:::>> one more final-thing-y:::>>> over the years, i've come to a posture that i don't trouble my old feeble brain with how Jamaica handles it's business ---- i'm from-foreign --- and my foreign-ideas might not work in/for Jamaica.
correction::>> my foreign-ideas WON'T work in/for Jamaica [full stop]
Totally agree with banning styrofoam containers. Reopen Negril recycling center. Have a returnable deposit on plastic bottles(i know they have it on beer bottles) Reinforce in school the importance of your environment and taking care of it. We have been coming to Negril since 1974 and dont remember so much trash back then.
The garbage problem is something everyone could help out with. If everyone picked up trash (locals and tourists)when they see it there would be little trash. I pick up trash everyday on my walks at home in Calgary.People will walk by or step on trash rather then pick it up. I pick up on the beach and around town but can't do it all. I got a thumbs up from a garbage man when he saw me picking some up on the beach road and putting it in the garbage can. Once when I picked up some garbage on the beach and was looking for a garbage can to put it in at a hotel the security guard said don't be bringing trash onto this property??? Garbage cans in front of hotels on the beach would help. I saw a picture of a sign in Bluefields that said "Bluefields recycles plastic bottles" so why can't Negril do it as well.
As others have stated, garbage and higgling are, for me, the 2 annoyances of Negril.
I have picked up garbage, but often, the garbage cans are full, and not sure of where to put the bag, once filled.
I want to feel reasonably safe, and I take care to travel in a group of at least one other. I am outgoing and willing to chat with locals, and sometimes buy what's being sold, but I don't want to feel pressured. I understand the desperation that does exist, but when I pay for a vacation, I don't want to feel that most of my money is going to buy trinkets that I am not interested in.
So.... just repeating/agreeing with what's already been mentioned.
Negril is still a beautiful place to me, very special... and I don't want to feel forced into an all-inclusive situation because I am being surrounded by garbage and pestering people when I choose to support the small businesses.
We usually travel as just a couple. We have always sung the praises of Negril, and we have friends who are considering joining us on the next trip... but we hasten to warn them that it will not be like other places to which we've travelled together in the past. The vibe is not for everyone... but less garbage and hassling on the beach could make it more attractive to those who are loyal visitors.
We just got back from our trip on Sat. We spent a week. 4 nights at Couples Swept Away, since Charela Inn was closed for Sept, and 3 nights at Cathca Falling Star. We had a wonderful time. We found everything to be great. It was quiet, even beyond quiet, dead. But we loved our time walking the beach while housed at CSA. We spent a lot of time walking the beach and we found that everything was better than ever. The beach is beyond wide and clean and we enjoyed our walks. Our time on the cliffs was memorable. We stayed in Libra Cottage and we had a wonderful time. We walked to the store down a bit to the left of the resort. We also walked to Tensing Pen for dinner. The road was like a ghost town. It was so different because of the season. But we loved our time in Negril this year. No complaints at all. So happy Matthew stayed away. Thanks to all who made our time so great. Nothing annoyed us, no litter, no hustlers. It was all good and quiet. It was how we always want out trip to Negril to be!
Minister,
The last nine years we have been coming, when I walk the beach every morning and evening I pick up garbage. The problem is also finding garbage cans. I remember(1974) the beach being so pristine. It breaks my heart. But I also see vendors walking the beach along with tourists dropping garbage ie: water bottles on the beach. Even some resorts are slow to pick up trash. They need an incentive to recycle.. maybe a deposit return for a few cents.
We returned home last Sat after a week in Negril. We missed a trip last year. We stayed at CSA for four nights. We did our usual, walked and swam. My initial reaction is that along the beach looked much improved. Lots of face lifts going on. Everything looked great, really. A pleasure. Absolutely no hassles. It was beyond quiet though. No parade of walkers at any time of day. On Sunday morning we walked pretty darn far toward town and only passed two other visitors. On our way the other way, none. While it was very relaxing the bit of buzz was missed. It was hot and still and the water was almost as hot. We headed to the cliffs for three nights. First time. Enjoyed our time there. Cathca was great for a first time stay. It was like we had the place to ourselves with between three or four other couples during our stay. Chatting one afternoon with another guest they relayed to us that they stopped referring people to Negril when the returning guests were not smitten with their trip due to the hustle. I told them I have had the situation. Seems you either love it or not. The street was empty. Also a good thing for a first time stay. We walked to the shops and restaurant at Tensing Pen. We found it to be overall clean, albeit a bit worn around the edges out along the road. But Catcha was sparkling. As was Tensing Pen. The ride to the cliffs revealed a much improved Bvd. The sidewalk was a great addition. So for us, Negril remains a destination. Next time we will do a split between Charela and LeMirage. Would prefer to stay on the cliffs at a place that does not open up for dinner guests. While there were few additional dinners I would rather have it darker and quieter at night.
For example, Moms Place. Sure, they have a Tripadvisor page, and a Facebook page that hasn't been updated for 5 years, but no website, no way to book online.
I may stay there next visit, but only because we've eaten there and asked to look at the rooms and discussed the rates.
I have a list I've made over the years of places I've passed by that I hadn't seen on the web. Some of the places may no longer be open, or since the list is a bit old, they may now have a web presence. I'll post it this evening.
HarryS...Mom's place has an online booking site when you search Google.
I can't think of one hotel that doesn't offer a way to book online...maybe I just can't think of any at the moment.
Bnewb, I'm guessing you mean booking.com. When I travel I like to research, and if all I can find is a booking.com page, and no actual website and very little traffic on their Facebook page.... well, if I hadn't been there before I don't think I (or many others) would take a chance. Not when other, similar places have a much more robust web presence. There's also that negril-videos website that has some information on some of these hotels, but it's old and outdated and you can't book there.
I will say it's gotten better, many of the places on the list I had now have a website of varying quality. The others with little to no web presence are Villa Mora, La Kaiser, Croton Grove, and Trombones Place. Maybe those are no longer open?
HarryS...I didn't mean booking.com.
Booking.com (Bookingsuites.com) unfortunately took over many of the hotelier's main websites...confusing people and not really providing fair service. This has happened all over the world not just in Negril. Booking.com did a he** of a sales job on these hotels.
Negril videos site was never completed even close to accurately and any updating seems to have stopped around 2011.
Some of the smaller properties may not have a strong presence merely because of their size or business situation...they're not ever going to be heavily mentioned anyways.
As far as the properties you've mentioned...without going into inappropriate detail, most are small family run properties or because of their business situation prefer to operate via word of mouth.
La Kaiser...has been closed for well over a decade.
If there's any other properties...I'd be happy to check on them.
I'm sorry... that's kind of an odd response... "without going into inappropriate detail"? These are hotels we're talking about, that presumably would like to rent rooms to people. I guess I don't understand "the runnings" if a hotel would rather stay vacant and hope they fill up by word of mouth, or stay empty.
La Kaisers, I thought it looked nice? Didn't appear to be a closed hotel? Sure, it looked empty but I typically go in the offseason... Odd that it appeared to be in decent condition if it's been closed for a decade.
My original comment was because there is a wide range of quality when it comes to the websites for hotels and resorts, and in this day and age a subpar web presence is business suicide. Websites without pics from this decade, websites without pricing, websites that are hard to navigate, or are lacking in basic information. No way to book directly through the hotel, and having to use booking engines I've never heard of, or have never used before? Not going to happen for me or for most anyone else.
Same with restaurants. Many don't have websites, or menus, or anything. It seems like Business 101, yet many businesses in Jamaica don't seem to get it? If you have a hotel, how hard would it be to add the menu to your restaurant to the website? For a small restaurant, would it be impossible to at the very least have a robust Facebook page with updates and menus and specials?
