The parishes of Westmoreland and Hanover have also seen an increase associated with the lotto scamming. We all hope that this scourge can be stopped. But it will take work on both ends.

"The data show that this year, Westmoreland has recorded an almost 100 per cent increase in murders. St. James has the second-highest movement, and Hanover also has significant increase. Against the backdrop of violence and killings of our young men, women and children in western Jamaica, the cause for concern is paramount. The project is aimed at enabling communities to strengthen and expand their ability to prevent and resolve disputes, thus the involvement of the community from day one to plan ahead for the January conference,"

Sounds like domestic violence is the main issue...

Earlier this year, Police Commissioner Dr Carl Williams said domestic disputes that turn deadly are among the main reasons for the hike in the murder rate this year.

That was the second quote from the article. And one article doesn't paint an accurate picture when there are many more out there.

I am doing my best to be real here. I could post dozens of more stories about the impact of the lotto scam.

Please do more research and what I posted will come into view. Domestic violence, while up with the murder/suicides will not account for the increase. Even the article you posted points that out when you read between the lines.

Many of the domestic violence incidents are more often than not related to the lotto scamming.

If you don't believe me, glean it for yourself. The lotto scamming must stop, and that means on both ends!

Forgive me, but, what is "lotto scamming"?

Someone gets a phone number, they then call that person and say
"You have won 3-5 million dollars in the Lottery",
just send $4,000.00 U.S. to me for fees and taxes
and the money will be sent to you.

Folks Send money via Western Union, or other ways.
Some folks (the elderly) fall for this
and then continue to send thousands and thousands of dollars.
But, it is a scam PapaG.

Fake, Faux, Con, untrue....It is a lie.

Rob, I believe you regarding the Lotto Scam causing violence...

Back to my original point...I hope the Peace Conference helps alleviate the recent surge in violence!

Negril was a huge part of my childhood and I love it!

I think the good in most of the people of Jamaica will overcome the bad of just a few...As long as they aren't in leadership...

No. The victims are usually elderly who have never been to Jamaica.

The violence is in the scammer's food chain. A lot of people got their hand in all that cash. No honor among thieves

And even foreigners. The greed is so bad that even victims and acquaintances of the scammers are joining forces with the "syndicates", often with bad results.

There have been incidents both here and in foreign where the "money mules" have been eliminated.

This scourge needs to stop on both ends.

I'm going to go out there. I certainly cannot disprove the lottery scam … good god that has been going on in Canada for a long time if you had a phone number … there are other versions too. I cannot make an informed comment. Nigeria spells scam.

Yeah, it has nothing to do with the Nigeria "419" scams, though it's basically the Jamaican version. It has been going on for a long time, and has become big business on the island. That is the root cause of much of the violence. It has nothing to do with tourists buying weed, or hash, or anything like that.

Yeah they do target the elderly back in 2007 my mother believed she won the big lottery just had to send bank information to Kingston and$500 ( she had Alzheimer's ) when we found out we quickly changed account# but we were too late for the$500 . So it does happen. It was a wake up call for us and we had to take control of all finances. She continued to get calls and she continued to believe that she won so we changed phone number that they had for 60 years and it finally stopped .
