one gadget Jim packs is a door stop/alarm. If we do not have that he puts a few red stripe bottles in front of the door when we go to bed. Glass bottles on tile floor make quite a loud noise.

LOL, I like to set little traps like that too (don't forget any accessible window)! Gives me just enough warning to grab something to bust "them" in the head if need be....although I sleep light and hear people moving well before they get to my door anyway.
I spent too much time living in the projects. I used to not even get out of bed - if I heard someone, I'd just holler "Babe, get the nine - someone's out there" and then listen to the perp running away. There was no Babe, just me and my babies.

heck, that's why I pack a maglite most places I go..has just enough heft to be able to conk someone over the head with if you can take them by surprise..
