What do you know about kids with disabilities in Negril (or other parts of Jamaica)? I work with children with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (like autism) and would love to assist if I can (I'm thinking communication training, working with families to address particular behavior problems, etc.). Although I don't have a trip scheduled any time soon (boo) I'm curious about what I can do in the future.

Sbeth,
To find out more about how to help with autism in Jamaica, please contact the Jamaica Autism Support Association. Here is a link to a recent message posted by Kathy Chang - one of the society co-founders:

She will be able to guide you in the way best to help out here in Jamaica!
Thank you for your help and support to the children of Jamaica!

Re: Pooper and the Puppies
When the clinic wrapped up we headed back to BCC so Pooper could shower up and get ready to hit the road for a little fun. She was tired however elated and was ready to have a good time.
We kicked it off at C&D/Jenny's bar to chill with Connie before we headed down to Eddie's Debar to get some chicken and kick it with Eddie and Bobo. We ended up staying there quite awhile, longer than we had planned but had the usual good time that one has at Eddie's. Decided to call this one an early night and get back and sit on our massive balcony of the Penthouse and take in the stars. Plenty of cold beers in the fridge drug the night out longer, but we are only here for five days and need to make the most of it.
Monday we wake up and decide that we want to go kick it at Seastar in the pool for awhile and get something to eat. I had read the pizza was good and decided to order up a pepperoni without all the veggies they throw on it. Man, that pizza was pretty dam good, better than I was expecting. Big juicy pepperoni, nice stringy cheese, and not much sauce on a thin crust, just as I like it. Killed the pizza as well as numerous beers and chatted up a mother daughter combo from Connecticut who were surprisingly first timers. They were super chill and seemed to really be in the zone. The place was slow besides them so we had the pool to ourselves. I checked out the new building and the progress that has been made since we were here in April. I toured the inside the previous day and paint is starting to go on. Can't wait to check them out on our next reach later in the year....
It was about that time to head down to Catcha to hit the bar and catch the sunset as well as some good eats. Pooper orders the seafood linguine for I think the 10th or 11th time ever. Back home she always changes it up, but not at Ivan's. We eat at the bar this night as we enjoy the company of the bar staff and the fun we have with them. Pumpkin soup anyone?
Attachment 16182
And don't forget to feed the parrot
Attachment 16183
Ivan's closes up shop so where else to go????? Eddie's of course, so off we go and have a few beers and than it's time for Eddie to wrap it up. I'm still not done and convince Pooper that a night cap at Mi Yard was in order. Hit it up and there are quite a few locals there and they are all ordering up from the food cases. I hear a guy order an egg sandwich and I have to have just one of those. Ended up taking one to go as well but before we can split we see some familiar faces.
Attachment 16184
Attachment 16185
Grab my egg sandwich and tell Bobo to stop by tomorrow as he has never been to the castle.
The next day just like clock work Bobo shows up and I bring him up to the Penthouse. We chill on the lower deck for awhile after I show him all the other decks. It was cool to watch him look out to the sea and ponder.
Attachment 16186
Bobo sets off and Pooper and I head up to Catcha to meet up with our Joey and his lady as we have a hot date with Bentley for some crab. We chill for a bit and than off we go to Bentley's. It's my second time there as I had been earlier to order up and make a deposit. It's everyone's first time eating there and we are all looking forward to the experience. As soon as we show up Bentley puts us on the corner of the deck where the best air flow is and we proceed to chit chit about all things crab and old bay. Soon enough these massive plates of food make their way out and just before we dig in I ask Bentley if he could point out what's on our plate. If you have eaten here before you know how animated he gets at this point. After some big smiles and laughs we dig in and it gets quiet all of a sudden. The other 3 had crab with some other goodies and I had spaghetti and meatballs, lots of meatballs.
Attachment 16188
Attachment 16189
Bentley gives a quick lesson on how to eat the crab and when done our plates look like we barely touched them. He gives you that much food. And do not forget the juice. I have no idea what it is as it's a mixture, but I'm sure it can only be good for you.

2 observations.
#1 - That's great that pooper took the time to help out with the pups.
#2 - pooper is extremely lucky to have such a cool husband, who will just spring a jamaica trip out of nowhere.

Hi Pooper! I wish I could give you a big hug for being so wonderful to those animals! You are amazing and your huge smile just lights up your face! Your hubby is so awesome for surprising you with this trip, and making it possible for you to volunteer your help to those animals .:)
And, Booger, I think you have amazing willpower when it comes to dogs, haha, cause I know it would have been so hard for me to leave that Shepherd behind, omg those eyes just got to me! I hope he and the other dogs end up in good homes, and I really hope to get the chance to meet you both in Dec.! :-)

Re: Pooper and the Puppies
I had to put both of my pups down 2 weeks ago today:( As we were waist deep in the earth, digging, it hit me...we were going to make a second trip to Negril this year no matter what it took. I just pushed the button tonight.
And I can't think of a better way to use all of our extra collars and leashes.
And bring more.
Moonlight Villa, I will be in touch. Heading your way in October.

Re: Pooper and the Puppies
Now it's time for some random pics of some good people in Negril:
Attachment 16289
Famous Vincent and Roger are great peeps and fun to spend some time with. You can snorkel, spear fish if you have your own, cruise the West End, cruise the West End during sunset, water taxi, you get the idea. As much as they wave their right arms must be bigger than the left.
Attachment 16290
Speaking of the water, if you want to dive the man pictured is Ken from Dream Team Divers. Ken and his wife Sabina offer instruction and are both great people. Sabina also volunteered at the spay/neuter clinic that Pooper participated in.
Attachment 16291
Karl Ricketts is a local artist who does some great landscapes of Negril. He can also be commissioned to do some one offs if you have something in mind. He did a killer landscape for us in black and white that we proudly hang on our wall and we ended up picking up another one this last reach. Ask around if you are interested and someone will hunt him down.
Attachment 16292
The aforementioned Bobo and the lovely lady who works at night at MiYard. She makes a killer, and I mean a KILLER egg sandwich.
Attachment 16293
Attachment 16294
Ty and Kevin, the reason why you want to hang out at Ivan's. Get these guys fired up and the show has just begun. I cannot think of a better place to spend my time than with these two at the bar at Catcha.
Attachment 16295
Steven West and the band at Seastar on a Saturday night. They put on a great show and play with great enthusiasm.
Attachment 16296
And to close it up I wanted to share a pic of my boy Shaky. You can typically find Shaky hanging out at Seastar where Chris and Francine the owners look after him. He is a gentle soul and really likes Pepsi, so hook him up if you see him.
Thanks everyone for riding along and posting all of the wonderful comments. I feel fortunate to be able to plan a trip so quickly as well as to give a little back to the place that has given Pooper and I so much. This trip was different than the others as our initial focus had nothing to do with Us, rather the few fortunate animals that were able to be put into a better place by all of the wonderful volunteers, and in the end we are better people. Thanks again Debbie at Moonlight Villa for getting the ball rolling as well as for being so gracious to all of those around you.
New Years cannot come soon enough.......

Hey Alexa,
Thanks for tagging along. You can drop your leashes and collars off with Debbie at Moonlight Villa. Her place is either next door to Blue Cave Castle or two properties down I believe. Any driver on the West End will know. It is about 1 1/2 km before you hit your place up on the cliffs on the water side.

Plus, a solid assist with Wpyogi, who has pushed the button -- big news anytime a boardie-bash vet returns home.

Scores of cats, dogs spayed and neutered in Negril

NEGRIL, Westmoreland — Over 250 cats and dogs in and around the Negril community were spayed, neutered and treated during a three -day veterinary clinic conducted by volunteers from the International Spay Neuter Network (ISNN).
The clinic was held from July 14-16 at the Negril All Age School, in Westmoreland.
[Hide Description] Dr Lesley Robson neuters a dog at a Sandals Foundation/International Spay and Neuter Network clinic held in Negril.
[Restore Description]
1/1
The clinic saw the US -based charity organisation collaborating with the Sandals Foundation, as well as the Jamaica Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA), the Ministry of Agriculture, Veterinary Medical Association and local volunteers in its continued efforts to control the population of stray dogs and cats on the streets.
"Over breeding of cats and dogs is a serious problem in Jamaica, especially in low-income areas," opined Dr Lesley Robson, veterinarian and ISNN representative. She continued that "many of these stray animals that wander the streets, beaches and communities are posing serious health and safety risks to people." "This make them prone to cruel treatment and possible death at the hands of humans, therefore spaying and neutering becomes the more humane way to reduce the population and prevent the suffering of these animals," she argued.
With the assistance of the Sandals Foundation, the team of some 18 volunteers have also performed surgeries on over 250 animals in Eltham, St Ann since the start of this year.
Under the initiative, more than 1,000 animals from the Negril region have been treated over the past two years.
In addition to performing surgeries, the vets and technicians shared with community members the importance of removing the animal's reproductive organs to prevent more strays and in essence promote better treatment of these creatures.

Re: Pooper and the Puppies
Fantastic!!!!!!!!!
Great job booger!
I can't believe Karl was right there at Ivan's! I have been trying to get one of his paintings for the last 3 trips but every single time I have seen him it has been while I was in a taxi driving by him on the road....so I STILL don't have one!
December.....it is on! I will find you, Karl! lol
Wpyogi....I am SO sorry to hear that about your sweet family members (thats how I think of our two dogs) but I think your trip will be perfect, and who knows....maybe you can even adopt a new one to bring home with you while in JA!
