amazing how many different views on one suject people can have.....not going to attack anybody but will point out a invasion of an OCCUPIED room took place....this is different then a burgalry......at some point somebody like me or fred is going to wake up and somebody is going to get hurt or killed....and your right shelly, it may well be the tourist...and it doesnt take a degree to figure that out....what troubles me the most is i have been from bora bora to belize to tobaga......but found negril 12 years ago and have been back 10 reaches....have always recommened to other people and have in fact taken down groups with as amny as 15 people including my son and my neice.....but in the last year i have had to back off doing that due to the apparent rise in crime....if the country,the town,the residents, the resort owners, everybody involved basically doesnt come up with some solutions people will quit coming just like they did in the early 80s when the u.s.a. declared jamaica dangerous.....i love negril and the vibe but anymore it seems like it is a mask and under the mask is a monster who just fakes it for the tourist to their face but pulls of the mask when you are not looking......i personally dont want to vacation in a place that makes me feel like a mark waiting to happen

Bottom line is we all want to feel comfortable in our beloved Negril.
What can we do to put our energy to better use in working together toward some possible solutions to this worrisome issue? If it keeps up it's only a matter of time until someone gets seriously hurt.

Well said onthecorner - something needs to be done. I don't want to spend my vacation looking over my shoulder or being afraid to go to sleep. We don't live like that and I certainly don't want to vacation like that...Quote:

Motion lights would help, well trained security and police (who are also trained in CPR), diligence in keeping doors locked and secured, keep all valuables at home, especially priceless jewelry and wedding rings. Lots of good security devices mentioned here, and lining bottles up in front of the door is a great idea. IMO, there should be more lights on the beach, maybe solar lighting. It gets dark so early there. Jamaicans are good people. We just have to watch out for the bad guys. Lots of people say this happens everywhere, but thank God it doesn't happen a lot where I live.
For the problem to eventually subside, more two-parent homes might help, too.

It is just (as they say) "a matter of time" before something catastrophic happens. No matter how you look at it, no scenario is a good one. I agree that one has to defend oneself if it comes to that. I just disagree with the idea that it is up to the tourist to defend his or her property at the risk of great bodily harm to anyone. After all, it is just a possession and can be replaced.
Putting pressure on the owners, police and community leaders to do something about this is (in my opinion) the right way to approach the problem. I have seen the toughest of people reduced to unrecognizable victims. It may seem important to some to show their cajones and bravado on what they would do but the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.
