Of course you are entitled to believe what you want, but as Flip pointed out, this "news" is over two years old and had to do with several dozen fish that died off - it turned out to be a single accidental incident - which is why there was no further "news" because there was no "news" to this event.

No, it is not sewage. it the river water flowing into the sea, which is why is "floats" on top of the sea water which is heavier than fresh water. That is also why you (any human body) floats in sea water, and sinks in fresh water...

You are correct. It is the tannic water of the river caused by the breakdown of the plant life in the Great Morass. This is the same way that tea gets it color from tea leaves....

Jamaican have and do swim in the sea when this occurs (the Caribbean is technically a "sea", not an "ocean"). I have swam it before - the darker layer is only on top of the heavier sea water due to the sea's salt content.

The reason they mentioned no smell is because there wasnt any. It was river water, not sewage, or as the best rumor we heard, an "oil spill from a tanker"..... gotta love the Negril Rumor Mill!

As an aside. A lot of the time the River is completely cut off from the sea, and there is a sand bar there. You would think, that if the river was a loaded with human feces as some people tend to believe... Crossing the bridge on the beach road to the roundabout would be a very unpleasant experience, and being in town would also be unpleasant.


Now, usually I am on my 7th or 8th bar by the time I make it down that far, and I might not notice the difference...
