I've wondered about the potential for medical tourism in JA. India has a burgeoning business with hospitals catering to US patients without medical insurance. Given our rather bizarre health care system, the cost of an operation for an uninsured patient here can run $25K to $100K. In other economies, it's possible to construct first rate hospitals that can provide the same services for 10-20% of the cost.

As of Xmas 2013, still looking for funding. It's a great idea and much needed but unless they have some serious financial backing, this will remain a dream.

The tourist taxes should be going to things like this. The hospital not only benefits tourism, but it benefits the locals too.

Rob, where exactly in Negril (or surrounding area) is this hospital being built? The first article posted back in 2011 said it would take roughly three and a half years to initial completion, projecting an opening then sometime next year. Is any actual building/construction now in progress? I'm glad to read other hospitals around the island are getting some help from the NIH, but what is actually going on in Negril, if anything? It would be great to read that they funded at least two more completely outfitted ambulances as the one Negril has is obviously not enough.
