That is another beauty of the adult-only AIs...no kids! I say this as a parent also, lol.

Oh No! i love it, in fact i prefer it, i like to do what i want to do, when i want to do it!
when i was there for 2 months last summer, a friend of mine came and visited, i was glad for the familiar face, but it was a constant power struggle over what to do every day.. add that to the fact that they didn't know how to swim..(nearly drowned over by margaritaville) and you've got the makings of a not so fun week..
I learned during my last trip (in march) that i love going solo.
Enjoy it while you can ! A sweetheart like you wont stay solo for long !
Peace
Hey BreanaAshlee - don't be bitter. Travelling solo can have its benefits. I used to have a BF who wanted to travel - I came to the conclusion that he was a lousy travelling companion - too uptight & rigid. Not the way I want to expore the world. While he was in the hotel room sulking, I was out in the streets of Spain, Italy, Paris, Berlin - meeting people working on my pidgen Spanish, Italian, French & German (that alone is good comedy) and having a ball. At least when I go away by myself, I know what I am in for in terms of a companion. I can either be my own good company or not. Travelling solo forces me to interact more with my environment and the people I meet there. This goes for my "tourist" experiences as well as my little bit of international volunteer work. I have met people in Ghana and Jamaica who will probably be life long friends for me.
SO - if you are ever on the rock the same time as me, lets pull up a beach towel & hang out. :)
Peace.

Our experience is this.
We went to Breezes Grand Negril at the end of November 2011 and after the smoke cleared, it cost us $3,565.00 for the two of us. The year before we spent 6 weeks (my wife spent 7). 2 weeks at Whitesands on the beach and the rest at Seastar Inn on the west end. Our overall cost for this trip was a bit under $7,000.00. 6 times as long (7 for my wife) for twice the price. This total includes all food, drinks, rooms, things to do, flights and transfers.
Having said that, I know you can get AI's cheaper than our experience but you definitly get a much better sense of the local vibe as it were, off AI in my opinion. Our best vacations have always been off AI. Off AI isn't for everyone but it is for us! I like feeling not obligated to eat or drink where I don't want to because of the price paid to be there.

Non AI is definitely better on your diet, that is for sure. How many of us were raised to eat what was on our plate?!?!
Definitely better for the diet. After 9 or 10 trips AI and gaining at least 8 lbs each trip we finally did non AI and only gained 3. Much easier to take off when you get home. No more AI for us!
Would it be safe to say that there's no right or wrong way to experience Negril for the people on this forum? I'm pretty new to the forum and haven't seen any negative remarks towards the people or the country. I think the reason people joined this forum is because they want to learn more, want to enhance their next experience, and share their memories. I have to admit that I have seen many enteresting points of view in regards to this post. Some people like AN, AI, non AI, both, with kids, no kids, and some travel alone. (now that would be an experience that I never thought of)
Maybe WE are "Out of Many, One People". LOL...sorry to be cheesey.
Well spoken Shark Bait!
I hate everybody equally, so this post doesn't have much relevance for me.
@ Booger. Classic!
@ Mo: I always lose weight in Jamaica despite eating and drinking to my heart's content. Probably because in the past I have walked everywhere, and Jamaicans diet's are healthier...lots of fruit, lower fat and carbs...
@ Shark: agreed my friend.
Booger! I can't wait to hang with you.....you make me laugh
Brasi- I walk a lot there too but have never lost weight in all my trips. Not eating enough fruit but lots of rice and peas I guess. I hate to admit it but I think it's all the drinking. I do wring my liver out when I get home. It helps a little.
I don't lose weight there. I eat much healthier at home and there's no way I could get in my regular amount of activity there like I do at home. Vacation is the one time of the year I let myself enjoy whatever I want. It makes the rest of the time worth it!
One of the reasons I love JA so is because of all the Ital food available. I used to visit Cuba often, it's difficult being vegetarian there.
My wife and I, and often our kids, have been going to Jamaica since the late 80's and have stayed at a lot of different resorts, A-I and Non. We like both at differnt times for different reasons.
This type of discussion (A-I v Non) comes up periodically over and over again. The part of it that seems just silly to me is when people who don't like A-I resorts start saying that when you stay at one, "You can't see the real Jamaica" or "When you stay at at A-I you are fenced inside your resort". I have even read posts by people who have said they think you are not allowed to leave your A-I resort. It just makes me want to scream sometimes. ou xcan have a really good and valid discussion about which costs more or less overall, but as for seeing Jamaica they can be exactly the same. The truth is that both A-I and Non can provide an awesome vacation. When it comes to seeing Jamaica, or meeting and interacting with Jamaicans, etc... staying at an A-I is NO DIFFERENT than staying anywhere else. If you are at an A-I here is the trick... walk on the front entrance head downt the road, or grab a cab... or head down the beach on foot....and go wherever you want. You know... just like when staying at a Non-A-I. :) Your hotel is a base of operations. From there you do what makes your vacation awesome for you... no matter where you are staying.
It's awesome either way.

That is a good price and I totally understand why someone would choose to do Jamaica this way. I, on the otherhand, stay for 4 to 6 months at a time and I also agree that "once you go you know".
If you are choosing between mid to higher price hotel as a non-AI vs an AI, it is a real no-brainer.
Those of us who stay longer need to do it in a different way. Either way, Jamaica is "sweet". I hope (and know) you will have a great time!
