Saw the choppers. Speculation from some locals was either looking for drugs, which seemed strange, or just a diplomatic mission.
Yeah,it's gonna be hard to get the drugs while on the helicopter, they should really land on the beach..yuk yuk
Maybe a shortage of things in Canada lol.
I'm with Crusher!! Shoveled before work and needed to shovel to get into the house after work.......
Today is our last "full" day on the island. We fly out tomorrow afternoon, back to the cold northeast. I have found this trip to be one of the best I have had in a number of years. The weather cooperated for the most part, and even on the one rainy day, I enjoyed watching the sea, the rain, and listening to the sounds produced in tandem. I have gotten up early almost every morning and watched the day brighten, listened to the sounds of the trees and birds waking up... Very peaceful.
The last few days have been largely uneventful, with the exception of those Canadian helicopters. There is a family staying here who spent a couple of weeks in Montego bay, they saw them a few times. I really wonder what that's all about.
We tried a few new places to eat. After Red Dragon, another boardie who is on property with me stopped at Juci Patties for his wife's lunch, and I went into Fries Unlimited. It's a little store front place, chicken, soups and fries for the most part... Great prices. My wife had breast/wing and fries for $5. Enormous portions, and for someone who is a picky eater, she was really happy. Also managed to find a place in walking distance to get her something bland for lunch. Mango Tree. It's just down from Banana Shout, a cook shop serving box food. A number of local workers stopped there while I was getting the wife some lunch, they seem to do a good bit of business.
For our anniversary, we had Murphys West End. We went with a boardie from the resort here, and dinner for four was less than $100, including red stripes. For $25, I had three lobsters (they were on the smaller side, but delicious) rice and peas. I had ordered a side of festival, and it was delicious... I could make a meal out of festival.... Murphys is not the largest place, but the namesake owner was very personable, the gentleman he has as a server explained all the dishes, and what was and was not in stock. Just a great experience all around.
The resort has added significantly to their life guard staff. I guess incidents over the last year have made is a requirement according to the ones we spoke with. Years past, they had one, and he was generally off doing his thing. There are three now, and watching them with the kids and guests was a show in and of itself. One, named Kimora is such a sweet kid. It's fun to listen to their stories of growing up in the rural parts of the island.
Flowers are rampant throughout the resort this year. Everywhere is an explosion of color. Last year was nice, this year seems just so much more vibrant. When we came two years back, it was shortly after Hurricane Sandy, and so much of the vegetation was killed off by salt. I look at the growth now, and think if this place were left untended by human hands, it would be gone in a matter of a few seasons.
We have booked for next year, had a slight glitch, as we were flip flopping on where we wanted to stay in the resort. Our original plan was to save some money and go with a smaller cottage (they are putting AC in all the cottages, opening up a lot of choices for us). The Red Birch is beautiful, and I really enjoy staying in here, but it is a waste of $$ for us. We ended up sleeping in the smaller of the two bedrooms, as it was darker and quieter, and I never really use the kitchen. We did have a smal group in the living room one day for lunch. Well, we went back and forth so many times throughout the day that someone else booked the red birch for our 10 days next year... The decision was made for us :). Personally, I have zero complaint with a cottage opening directly into the sea.
The raft is still going strong! Even after a couple of days with really choppy water, it remains floating. I've promised it to one of the life guards when I leave (bringing it home would prove to be too much of a hassle), and he and another of the guards already have pics of it up on their Facebook pages. Too funny. On the calm days, it has seen a lot of use. I look like a walrus trying to get in, the kids just hop on like it is nothing.
Thanksgiving was spent at the resort. They had all the traditional foods, and quite possibly the largest bird I've ever seen (I remain unconvinced that they did not feed us pterodactyl). We sat with four other couples at a large family style gathering. The last few holiday meals I've had at home have generally been my wife, her mom and her moms husband. Sitting with that many people kind of felt like a traditional dinner, even though I only knew one couple and had just met the other three. One of the better thanksgivings I have had in some time, really.
I have so many pictures from this trip, and will be taking many more today. They are easier to post when I get home to my internet (it's perfectly acceptable, but kind of slow here). I'll post as many as I can to give some illustration to the sporadic reports.
I have SO enjoyed following your posts! I almost felt like I was there! Glad you had such a good time.
Hubby and I will be in Negril the first week in May (our first time) Can't wait!
I want one of those floats!!!
Great report for certain,we heard the choppers were looking for Groove, hehehe!
Just Anna add a quick aside before I sleep for the last time on the island.
We went to Bourbon Beach today. I've had it in my head that this was just an entertainment spot (this, in spite of going across the street from it on average two times a trip at Times Square. Anyway, had their jerk chicken.
Jerk chicken is now ruined for me in any other spot. I had it this evening for dinner at the lodge, and ended up not eating it. Whatever they have in the sauce at bourbon beach... Literally made it the best I have EVER tasted.
