Cutanous Larva Migrans......

I recently listened to an audio lecture from "Great Courses" on hookworm. In 1909 7.5 million people in southern states (nearly 40% of the population in some areas) had hookworm. The American hookworm was discovered in 1902 by Charles Stiles. It was called the laziness disease because it made people anemic and they didn't feel like doing much. John Rockefeller spent millions of dollars to educate the people and doctors and set up free clinics all throughout the south to combat hookworm. By 1920 hookworm cases had been cut in half and by 1940 it had virtually dissapeared. They had medicine that worked in the early 1900's, so I'm sure they have it now.

I heard sterilizing yourself from the inside out helps prevent the problem ;)

Couple of really good pieces of advice in this thread.

Rob's mention that sand in the sunlight and sand at the waterline should be safe to walk on. Hearsay only, but I have been told that the larvae can not survive in sand above a certain temp and that sand exposed to sunlight is above that temp.

Falling coconuts as mentioned by Rob & Captaind amongst others. As a driver I learned years ago do not park under a coconut tree they will take a windshield out quickly. That advice also works on Breadfruit trees,,,,, not as high of a fall, but a pretty large projectile.

Both points might lead to the advice, walk your property when you arrive and note drop zones.

Fyi, with regard to falling coconuts........you are far more likely to be killed by a falling coconut than a shark.....just to further confuse this thread :)

My pitbull had mange and the vet gave us Ivermectin to give to her. Started with a small dose of 1 cc then 2 cc and then 3 cc's every day until the bottle was empty. Did a good job of killing the mites that cause manage.

My puppy (now my full grown dog) came home with me from the dog shelter with mange. Ivermectin did the trick. It was crazy expensive through the vet so we got the dosing information and bought it at the local feed and seed store but almost nothing. Totally relevant comment, eh?

more useless info= budgie bird at work had bird mites and guess what cured it! Ivomec!! Just took a bit to figure out the dosage lol........I got hit on the head by a falling almond last reach sure don't want to experience a coconut!!!!
