Actually the Jam economy is heavily dependent on services, which account for 65% of GDP..it dervies most of its foreign exchange from tourism, remittances (hello western union) and bauxite/alumina.Tourisim industry provides about one-forth of all jobs..
this comes from the 2013 cia worldbook facts ...
Tourisim may not be bread and butter but its worth more than a roll of paper towels....
I have got to pipe up here because my head is about to burst steam. These same people offering up how they would physically take on the thieves are you 8 foot with a machine gun in your pocket and the mind of NASA?
For freeking real. If your mind is in sleep cycle and you awake from your cycle in mid cycle, NO WAY IN HELL your body ready to properly respond. Fight or flight neutron response will occur, however: your balance is impaired , your vision and many other factors impaired. How do I know this? My Doctorate says so.
Does it suck your stuff is missing yes. BUT use your darn adult minds here: they have entered a property illegally in middle of the night when they know most all residents are onsite and the chance of one on one encounter is very real. They have not been sleeping, their minds, their balance their vision is all centered on one thing: Leaving with your items. Do you think they are scared of your half asleep ars that they just watched snoring for the 5 minutes they were searching your room before you peeked up.Safest and best thing is pretend you are sleeping or lightly start to muffle or shuffle not making any indication you are fully awake. Then again if you have the Incredible Hulk in bed next to you like some of these guys posting think they are no worries right boys? KMT
Straight up fact of the matter, these people doing the room invasions go in knowing there is a very real chance they will have to use physical violence. You will not come out ahead here no matter how much alcohol or sub induced ego have you going on.
Also I don't generally make it practice to agree with Gerry on anything although he does have more experience than I in this whole being robbed in Negril scenario but the room invasion thefts are definitely on the rise hugely in the last couple years. Regular room thefts items left in open those are all common for decades but this breaking into rooms while occupied is getting very unsafe and frankly many many woman travelers are stopping visiting because of it. When I looked and asked advice about this upcoming trip one of my requirements for a new place was that they not have had any room invasion burglaries in the last twelve months. Most all of the recommendations I got I knew of these events occurring and didn't understand how others didn't it had been all over webs, Rondel was one mentioned and I asked that 5 months ago.
The advice to not bring your communication devices I have to roll my eyes. If it is my vacation, my relaxation that i spent my money on to relax and part of my relaxing is reading on my kindle, checking in on facebook. Those are parts of my vacation why would I leave the things I like or want or need to do at home. I have been to 15 other vacation destination countries in the time I have been going to Jamaica, never have I nor would I leave behind the things that are part of my relaxing or that I want to have along. That is a dumb suggestion. Do I need diamonds and Gold to relax not at all , i didn't take those to haiti during the Hurricane relief but i did take my laptop, and cellphone and miraculously during the lowest time of peoples lives where piles of people were being burned in the streets, my stuff came home with me unharmed. If people have to hinder their vacation because common communication devices make them stick out as a potential victim I say it is time to find a new country.
This subbed out night security is what happened at NBCC when the night stuff started happening also. The change was astounding from one visit to the next 3 years ago in a matter of 3 months. One visit I was wasted drunk went down to use lobby wifi at about 3:30 am Charlie was chatting with taxi drivers, I went back up to my room and next thing I was being awoken by Charlie rapping on my door way and yelling at about 5:30 when he brought up my key I had left in lobby and pointed out I had went to sleep with door wide open on my condo. Next trip as I came and went all evening had to ask locals to get out of my doorway so I could go in, watched them reaching in the 2nd floor bathroom windows taking shower items, having sex in whirlpool around 3 am and thankfully for me got the view from my room of night beach guard being serviced by multiple woman throughout the night while remaining in his beach chair, this was when he wasn't sleeping. Something has to be done to make sure these sub out companies are solid and tourists demanding it is the only thing that will change this. charlie was old and thin and frail but nobody got on that property without himself coming to my door to know if I wanted to meet that guest at the front desk.
Stepping down from my soapbox and head feels much better.
^^^^^^ LoL^^^^^^
before I read Shelly's novel I thought to myself "I bet she doesn't make it thru this without a Gerry mention."
Midway thru I read this: "Also I don't generally make it practice to agree with Gerry on anything although he does have more experience than I in this whole being robbed in Negril scenario but the room invasion thefts are definitely on the rise hugely in the last couple years."
Gerry, What did you do to Shelly?
Oh Booger........ you beat me to it, not much gets by you.
Goes way back as in years, probably best for a pm, aw boy still chuckling over your post. Kind of reminds you of that Glen Close / Michael Douglas movie where the psychotic woman was sitting in her bedroom by her lamp and just repeatedly turning it on and off plotting against Michael Douglas. I think it was called Fatal Attraction or something like that. I wonder if her character had a Doctorant ? This might be aging myself, darn't.
But I have to admit that I also get some pretty good chuckles over the "I'd do this or I'd do that posts" also. Trust me unless you've actually been in it or it's happened to you sorry but no you don't know how you'd handle it, you might think you do but again please believe me you don't. Having said that tho I'm not quite sure exactly how a doctorant can explain too much at all about me sorting somebody out that's in my house when I wake up. But I promise to reach out to the professor types the next time I go to the library.
I think I read a statement by this Fred Stripe character saying something like by not naming the property in a small way the person deserves it? Was that right? Come on man you can't be serious on that one, that's uncalled for. Also I've talked to a lot of police in my time, especially (unfortunately) when I was younger and some had uniforms, some had suits but I never had one call himself a "ghetto cop" or talk the way you do for that matter. Just an observation.
I'm still sorry for the original poster, but this one is kind of getting wild.
Jamb
p.s. Cap't D thank you for keeping your comment to yourself , best post I've ever read from you
I talked about the sleep cycles and neuron reactions boys that is why I mentioned my schooling in it. You all know someone will soon respond with " If someone is breaking in my room i will wake fully up immediately to be able to kick their ars..) Scientifically impossible to have all your marbles when awoken in middle of sleep also while dealing with fight or flight response was my point. Nothing about a who better than who. It was an I know this information for positive sure. Jambarney Pm me also because I am very curious to hear the version you were told as I am sure with each new tell it gained some strength. Never really was a big deal Gerry and I just two VERY different type of travelers. As stated I agreed with him on something. You boys really have me curious with the fatal attraction noting. Psycho Woman, Oh Yes at times for sure no doubt.
Didn't mean to have harm come upon anyone but my point was....I driving one way down the road,,,you are driving the other way,,,I just passed the bridge that was closed and I don't bother to tell you the bridge is closed? Get it? I never Warned you.
Also my friend,,,UMMM a Ghetto Cop term is used to separate me from the cops who just bust folks for spitting on the pavement, I dealt with Real criminals ? But UMM ,,never mind. I get it,you were Dumb enuf to get Got and so you hate cops.Yawn.
Take your electronic devices and fancy phones with you and the odds are that you may not leave with them; not every reach but going often you are bound to leave empty one time. Or, stay in the fort knox compounds where mostly everyone has these devices and the odds are less that it will be you losing your devices lol. If you want to read your whole trip, JA may not be the place for you, at least on the busy beach. Heck I just borrow one of the locals' I-pad to check in at home .. stolen .. dunno but dare I ask "how did you get that lol." It's like them asking us, when did you arrive, where are you staying, how long are you staying tee hee. I have a cheap phone and really want no connection to the electronic world while I am away except for checking in at home once per day. I take great dvds for the locals to watch on the tv at one bar we patronize and that keeps their attention directed at the movie and not what's going on around them for a change, although I think they can do that at the same time too lol.
Another option, keep your devices in your room .. never show them around the complex ... take it to one of the fancier places and do your thing .. pack it up, take it back to your room and hide it. I do not think a lot of these burglaries are random .. they have been watching and calculating .. if you don't give them anything to see, then why would they take the risk? Otherwise, it's just plain bad luck, wrong place at the wrong time and that can happen anywhere.
I heard that when a thief is caught and convicted in JA, it's hard time, so these people are really stricken with "hard times" and I do believe that some of these culprits are drug addicts and owe a debt .. if they don't take this risk, then they are surely prey by their own people. It must be awfully hard to wake up each day with a smile -- and smile they do :-) to face no job and sometimes no home and hungry, probably with kids to feed somewhere on the island. We are not talking about our own countries which are basically turning into welfare states .. no food banks, no financial help of any kind .. I talked to a couple of good people there and thieving does cross their mind when they are "hungry" and we line the establishments along the beach eating and drinking .. they hide away at dinner time have you noticed? Not the type of food they want to eat anyway .. that's why most stay healthy. Ok ranting along here .. I don't write often but it builds my strength and understanding for my next reach as I pack my bags full of gifts, toiletries, dishes, clothing for the needy ones. Blessed day everyone.
Never let it be said that facts ever got in the way for a booger or Elmer Fudd.

Economy - overview:
The Jamaican economy is heavily dependent on services, which now account for nearly 65% of GDP. The country continues to derive most of its foreign exchange from tourism, remittances, and bauxite/alumina. Remittances account for nearly 15% of GDP and exports of bauxite and alumina make up about 10%. The bauxite/alumina sector was most affected by the global downturn while the tourism industry was resilient, experiencing an increase of 4% in tourist arrivals. Tourism revenues account for roughly 10% of GDP, and both arrivals and revenues grew in 2010, up 4% and 6% respectively. Jamaica's economy faces many challenges to growth: high crime and corruption, large-scale unemployment and underemployment, and a debt-to-GDP ratio of more than 120%. Jamaica's onerous public debt burden is the result of government bailouts to ailing sectors of the economy, most notably to the financial sector. In early 2010, the Jamaican government created the Jamaica Debt Exchange in order to retire high-priced domestic bonds and significantly reduce annual debt servicing. Despite the improvement, debt servicing costs still hinder the government's ability to spend on infrastructure and social programs, particularly as job losses rise in a shrinking economy. Jamaica was hard hit by the effects of the global economic crisis, experiencing economic contractions from 2008-10 and growth remains low. The SIMPSON-MILLER administration faces the difficult prospect of having to achieve fiscal discipline in order to maintain debt payments, while simultaneously attacking a serious crime problem that is hampering economic growth. High unemployment exacerbates the crime problem, including gang violence that is fueled by the drug trade. As of late 2012, the SIMPSON-MILLER government was working to negotiate a new IMF Stand-by agreement to gain access to additional funds.
Than what is it? I Googled it before I posted it and that is what returned. According to the CIA World Factbook it is 10%. http://www.theodora.com/wfbcurrent/j...a_economy.html. That is if you believe what the CIA has to say. So several searches returned results from 4-10%.
So I stand corrected. It is a roll of paper towels, roll of toilet paper, and throw in tube of toothpaste for all those wonderful Jamaican smiles. Remittances account for more than tourism at 15%, so the folks who left add 50% more to GDP than the folks who are visiting. Facts are facts and tourism will not grow until crime and corruption are dealt with.
I just found out that If I put golfballs in my mouth I know Everything.
Kinda like the Marlon Brando of Jamaica.
Gee,you would think that it was Me,Fred who was the thief? Gee,no real anger to the thief,Eh Pong? Or is it Don ? Do you wear a white collar and a funny pointed hat also?
When I go to Vegas for a trip,do I really want info from the guy who live 20 miles from Vegas but never goes to Vegas?
Can ya just give me Sundays Pick Six numbers instead?
I heard Rondell is giving all customer's a Rape Whistle,,Free.
Lol. My analogy is in reference to a poster mentioning tourism is the bread and butter of the Jamaican economy.
So who is going to post a ripoff story today? I have yet to be hit in all of my trips, knock on wood. Then again I stay at places that take security serious.
I can see you now Fred with your balls in your mouth! I think you picked up some bad habits in the Ghetto! I'm thinking of my next trip. Let's see, transport to Negril... Check, stop for red stripe and rum cream... Check, cell phone and sidearm from driver, Check... It's all good to go!!! I'll think I'll leave the security devices and firearms at home and carry myself the Canadian way...by thanking the thief and offering a hot cocoa before he leaves.
I always walk the beach with a walking stick. Do it,they pick weak victims who have no weapons. P.S. I hope I didn't offend any thieves by saying this.
For the Love of God could you two just chillax so we dont lose this thread!!
I agree with Bigga - it's starting to feel like TA over here - can we lose the personal attacks?
Just to be safe, I hereby extend an open invitation to Lennox Lewis to hang out with me in Negril this summer. I hear the great ex-heavyweight boxing champion enjoys the Seastar Inn, btw.
I don't know if Rambo is back but I hope so. Anyone have an update on this???
You do NOT want to mess with Rambo .....
Attachment 34864
amazing how many different views on one suject people can have.....not going to attack anybody but will point out a invasion of an OCCUPIED room took place....this is different then a burgalry......at some point somebody like me or fred is going to wake up and somebody is going to get hurt or killed....and your right shelly, it may well be the tourist...and it doesnt take a degree to figure that out....what troubles me the most is i have been from bora bora to belize to tobaga......but found negril 12 years ago and have been back 10 reaches....have always recommened to other people and have in fact taken down groups with as amny as 15 people including my son and my neice.....but in the last year i have had to back off doing that due to the apparent rise in crime....if the country, the town, the residents, the resort owners, everybody involved basically doesnt come up with some solutions people will quit coming just like they did in the early 80s when the u.s.a. declared jamaica dangerous.....i love negril and the vibe but anymore it seems like it is a mask and under the mask is a monster who just fakes it for the tourist to their face but pulls of the mask when you are not looking......i personally dont want to vacation in a place that makes me feel like a mark waiting to happen
What the h•ll has this thread turned into?!
Bottom line is we all want to feel comfortable in our beloved Negril.
What can we do to put our energy to better use in working together toward some possible solutions to this worrisome issue? If it keeps up it's only a matter of time until someone gets seriously hurt.
Lol I see I'm a slow editor! ;)
yes enough already lmao
whats so funny about this shaggy.....
Motion lights would help, well trained security and police (who are also trained in CPR), diligence in keeping doors locked and secured, keep all valuables at home, especially priceless jewelry and wedding rings. Lots of good security devices mentioned here, and lining bottles up in front of the door is a great idea. IMO, there should be more lights on the beach, maybe solar lighting. It gets dark so early there. Jamaicans are good people. We just have to watch out for the bad guys. Lots of people say this happens everywhere, but thank God it doesn't happen a lot where I live.
For the problem to eventually subside, more two-parent homes might help, too.
You are exactly right and that was the point I was making way back in the beginning before..... well, before.
You might wake up or you might not. You might get maimed or even killed and/or you might maim or kill the intruder.
It is just (as they say) "a matter of time" before something catastrophic happens. No matter how you look at it, no scenario is a good one. I agree that one has to defend oneself if it comes to that. I just disagree with the idea that it is up to the tourist to defend his or her property at the risk of great bodily harm to anyone. After all, it is just a possession and can be replaced.
Putting pressure on the owners, police and community leaders to do something about this is (in my opinion) the right way to approach the problem. I have seen the toughest of people reduced to unrecognizable victims. It may seem important to some to show their cajones and bravado on what they would do but the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.
