Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
I think it's a must see.It ties up a pretty good chunk of day
Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
Good point. There is definitely the novelty of it all but the answer really depends on so many factors. To me, it is kind of one those things that you want to experience once. With that said....here are some points to consider.
Approx. a 2 hour drive. That can be fun....or boring. So much depends on your driver, the folks that you are with at the time, and where and if you stop to smell the roses along the way. I would recommend having some other places that you would like to visit...while making the trip. Not...just to Pelican Bar.
Of course to me...eating is a high point in Jamaica. So many likkle places with great food along the way. Plus, if going, I would hang out at Jake's a bit, esp. at the bar with Dougie...who I hope is still there. Hit Jack Sprats for a meal and also a great beach area near by.
Bottom line....take time and think about it..sometimes on vacation we have enough time to just go with it...other times...not so much. Make sure to have a good driver and some friends that know how to kick back and enjoy the vibes!! :)
Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
You do need to plan for an all day trip. We hit the Appleton tour and some other stuff on the way. It is worth it to do at least once. The vibe is unlike any other - and it is great to chill for the afternoon as folks come and go in boats as you chill. We had the freshest fish ever on one trip - ordered the fish and asked what kind - they said they hadn't caught it yet! Fyi, no facilities at the bar..
It rained on our second trip and we still had a blast.
Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
I enjoyed going to the Pelican Bar. Its a unique experience, however it is a long drive. For me, once is enough.
Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
I think it is worth seeing at least once, but I would definitely combine a visit there with another attraction like YS Falls (which I did), Black River or Appleton Factory. Going with a group might add to the experience too. I went during a solo trip to Negril. There were not very many people at the Pelican Bar when I went so, as you said, the novelty did wear off.
I've done it once. I probably won't do it again unless my wife wants to check it out sometime. Knowing her, she'd prefer to remain on the beach than go to a bar two hours away.
Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
We went with Rocky from Rocky's Taxi & Tours, stopped at YS Falls for a few hours and then on to Pelican Bar. Sat out on the deck in the sun, swam and had cocktails for the afternoon. This is a day trip for sure, but Rocky made it worth it with his knowledge of the area AND a safe ride. I loved it and highly recommend doing it at least once. Where else can you sit on a dock, sipping Red Stripe or rum punch and watch fish, lobster and stingrays swim underneath your feet!
Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
Be there ..done it ..
& we really liked it ...
Very cool/chill vibe
Full day trip ..if you add in YS Falls
We chartered a cab for the day .. & it was well worth the $$$
Mi lady usually puts out a top 3 list before each reach .. could be something very simple ..to something like a full day trip
this was on her list so, we did it .. no regrets
Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
Linston has done several trips over there. Makes for a nice day if you add in YS Falls or Appleton.
For years I would take him with me to the Estate on weekends (IF he did well in school that week)
First time I ever let him drive the jeep was on one of those trips.
It's a nice ride and stopping at Border for bammy and Miggle Quarters for "swims" (shrimp) is/was a must.
Here's his web page www.redplate-negril.com

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
Captaind,
Is Border a big roadside restaurent situated on a hill not quite in a town (sorry about my weak geography)?
Do they serve cowskin and chickenfoot soup as a specialty?
