Current "Benchmark" prices in Negril
Soon come for another visit. It's been a while since last reach. In trying to gauge current prices in Negril, I always use the price of a half chicken from the barrel men, and Maureen's price for a cold Red Stripe at Sunnyside Bar. Anybody know the current prices of these two "benchmark" items? :). Thanks!
Re: Current "Benchmark" prices in Negril
This past January on the beach road, 1/2 of smaller chicken + slice of hard dough bread was $3,000j. In same time 2025, price was $2,400J and same time 2024 price was $2,000J. Note: In front of The Jungle, the prices were even higher. As a Canadian long time tourist and at $100J= $1CDN, it equates to $30CDN for 1/2 chicken + bread for this year.($20US)

I believe Best in the West a 1/2 jerk chicken is around 30$ US

Yikes!
I thought two years ago that prices were high. We will be there in November and I am worried about the prices. I realize costs have went up but at the same time, as consumers, we have choices.
Re: Current "Benchmark" prices in Negril
As the prices get higher, I become more aware of the 20-25% tax that many places charge and tend to go to places like Firefly, Coletta's, Miss Sonia's..ect ect where the price is the price. 25 % tax is showing up more and more.

It certainly adds up!
The combination of the service charge which can be anywhere from 10-15% and the required GCT (general consumption tax) which is also anywhere from 10-15%...hits hard at some restaurants.

That is some very expensive chicken! (But it is soooo good). So does anybody know the price for an icy cold red stripe at Sunnyside Bar?
Re: Current "Benchmark" prices in Negril
That?s just crazy $$$ I need the price to be the price, not marked up a few time after the fact?
I?ve always chased a good deal even when prices where cheap.
I?ll be back in Negril in 38 days and again in November.
Sometimes I feel it?s all most offensively high. What and where are the locals eat and buying??
The cheapest beer is in my fridge, i guess?
Firefly, Coletta's, Miss Sonia's..ect ect Keep that list going! I for 1 need it.
have no issue with handing cash to anyone for good food & drinks it just has to make sense?
I support locals and Ja owners it?s just hard to eat a chicken that?s move up over 100% it a short period..

Why are my apostrophe?s question marks?.
Just another mystery lol
Re: Current "Benchmark" prices in Negril
Back in the day, Negril food and drink was cheap by American standards. Those days are long gone. The prices today are comparable to American tourist towns. $30 USD for a half chicken? A local NC soul food joint offers 1/2 hot chicken for $15. We still love Negril and Negril restaurants, but we don't expect a bargain vacation.
