Does anyone know the current rates for route taxis? If I remember last year (not sure I do) it's $150J from the West End to the Roundabout and then another $200J to say the Riu (or there abouts).

I believe it is 100J each leg per person. So 200J from West End to RIU. There was a thread about this yesterday:

yes! it is 100j from westend to the roundabout... 100j to anywhere up the beach and if you go to savanna-la-mar it is 170j each way
I should have taken the time to see that it was just talked about. $100J per person down to Juicy Pattys and the another $100J to Tamboo for some lobster pizza it is then. Thank you both!
Local taxi rates are for the local people of Jamaica. Taxi drivers in Jamaica are hurting and can barely make a living. Gasoline prices are extremely high. We hope that you all would at least cover the local taxi drivers for, at least, the price of a couple of Red Stripe Beers.

No disrespect Rhodesresort, but....just imagine how much more $$ they could make if more tourists used the route taxi. Our Jamaican friends were the ones that told me about route taxis and suggested it for our transportation. We use them exclusively, other than when we walk. The more folks in the taxi, the better for us...we enjoy our rides and learn so much. When we are respected with the yardie price, we always tip in respect to them. In the past few years, we have been welcomed by the drivers. At first, there was a learning curve, but now, I couldn't imagine not using them. I do realize the prices of gasoline, which is reflected in the increase of fares. Most of the visitors to JA have to work hard for the cash to vacation there. Just like at home, I always want to figure out a way to watch what I spend. When I dine, I want yardie food...occasionally a special dinner, but I and most on this board, want to help the smaller vendors. I feel at home now in Negril and this is where I choose to spend my money. Trust me mon, most of us have ultimate respect for the hard working taxi drivers and we want to give them business. If a route taxi is empty, isn't some money better than none??? Most of the drivers are more than happy to have passengers while using gasoline rather than none. Respect!
this past summer i was in Jamaica for 2 months and learned to you the route taxis and rarely did i ever ride in one that was empty.. in fact most times i was in the back with 3 or 4 other people... they make pretty good money.

Perhaps so? But, lets agree to disagree.
Jamaica is a developing country, known as a third world country. In an already depressed economy, taking advantage will not help the people. Gas prices are higher in Jamaica than in the United States. The local taxi rates are based on, again, a very depressed economy. "Just imagine how much more $$ they could make if more tourists used the route taxi". No matter how many tourists use route taxis, paying the driver local rates still doesn't cover it.
Some of us are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to travel. The opportunity for most Jamaicans, never will.

paying the route taxi rate is not taking advantage of anyone. Why would you make a divide in people like that rhodeshall? Everyone human, taking route taxi--why would one person have to pay a different price? Because Jamaica is a developing country? I lived in India for 3 years and never was asked to pay more than anyone else for transportation. I do not have a pocket full of cash, in fact I barely get by. But I love Jamaica so that I scrape it together to make trips. I pay the same amount at JA grocery stores as locals, I pay the same for gas, I pay the same for cooked food, and I pay the same for route taxis.
