Water shortage / rationing question
I have read a couple different posts on the water situation. One says it is a drought and water will be shut off for part of the day. Another said it was due to a broken supply pipe.
What is the situation?
Are you preparing by taking wet naps, dry shower, hand cleaning gel, etc. ?
Re: Water shortage / rationing question
There is another post on water stating its from a drought and the west end would have water from 1:00 to 8:00...
Re: Water shortage / rationing question
It is a mix of drought here in Jamaica & the repairing of pipes.
It will depend on where you are staying how the water situation will be...many properties are very prepared for this kind of situation and you may not notice any disruption in water service.
For the smaller vacation properties & homes like Rob and I have set up and as many of our neighbours have done we have a tank & pump system which collects & stores water when the town system has been shut down. Or, the water can be shipped via water trucks. Again, many of the hotels offer this same service.
Simply...only the owner of a property will be largely effected by the annoyance/disruption of having to truck water in to fill their tanks in the worst scenario....but most hotels are prepared for this & deal with it.
Rob spoke with the Mayor of Sav La Mar yesterday & with many of the business leaders in town about the water situation and we'll get a update later in the day...we've been hearing this issue may have been resolved.
Conservation awareness is always good though.
Re: Water shortage / rationing question
Lisa Thanks for the info. I read the Observer article as well as some other tidbits about pipes. The Observer article mentioned the water treatment system not operating to capacity or something like that. It made me wonder if this was a long term or (hopefully) a short term issue.
We would appreciate any pertinent info as you receive it.
We always buy bottled water and bring wet ones type towels etc... but if its still bad in a month we will bring more and be prepared.
I hope the water shortage doesn't affect the availability of Red Stripe. :)
Edit: How are the bars / restaurants coping with it?

Granola bars and other packaged edibles might not be a bad idea also. How many food handlers are washing their hands or dishes before serving meals with no water available? NO PROBLEM,MON cause their business depends on your patronage. Bathing is the least of my worries. Water rationing is a very serious situation. We had it here in my home town for weeks after hurricane Sandy. Many local restaurants/bars were forced to closed because of this. I am a bit comforted by Bnewbs's post about many properties being prepared for this. Unfortunately here in the Northeast we weren't. Please keep us updated.
PS....
Sorry if I'm sounding overly concerned but after 2 months of cleaning up after Sandy, I booked this trip last minute to get away from a life changing trauma only to find myself going to a similiar situation all over again.
Re: Water shortage / rationing question
OBS,
The situation is nothing at all comparable to what you went through after Sandy. Comparing what is happening in Negril to what happened to you after Sandy is like comparing low tire pressure to having your car explode. This is easily being dealt with and may possibly already be rectified. We will be finding out more later in the day.... and we will give everyone an update.

Yes, in terms of devastation and destruction you are correct. But water rationing and water pollution were and still are remaining problems here and this has probably been the cause for my alarm. Nothing can be done about the forces of mother nature but I do appreciate the fact that you're on top of this and keeping us informed. Thank You. Respect
Re: Water shortage / rationing question
Thanks for the info! I look forward to the update. Going to Negeil in April.
Re: Water shortage / rationing question
Any update on the water shortage situation in Negril. I'm going to be there in a few days and keep reading more and more posts about not being able to shower or flush toilets. Not to mention my concern about the quality of the swimming water as well, from what I read. I found a simple solution for that though. A must for all travelers.

Re: Water shortage / rationing question
Oceanbeachsky...I don't see any posts here about not being able to shower or flush toilets etc.
The water in the deep West End is available but still running at a lower pressure....the beach road water pressure is currently strong....
AND...I don't know where you are getting this misinformation about water pollution...I don't even know how to address that...
