Pelican Bar - worth it?
I've contemplated going to the Pelican Bar but never done it.
My fear is that it's novel, but that the novelty would wear off quickly (ultimately is the experience different from being in a bar on the beach or the Red Dragon (for instance)?).
How much time would you have to commit if you were traveling from Negril (going to and coming back)?
Did you find the experience worth the investment of your time?
I value every second in Negril, but I don't mind leaving for a great experience (i.e. Rocklands bird sanctuary and the trip to and from).
Are there other places/events accessible in the area /on the trip to the Pelican bar?
As always,
thanks for the time it takes to answer,
and for sharing your expertise.

I think it's a must see.It ties up a pretty good chunk of day

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
Good point. There is definitely the novelty of it all but the answer really depends on so many factors. To me, it is kind of one those things that you want to experience once. With that said....here are some points to consider.
Approx. a 2 hour drive. That can be fun....or boring. So much depends on your driver, the folks that you are with at the time, and where and if you stop to smell the roses along the way. I would recommend having some other places that you would like to visit...while making the trip. Not...just to Pelican Bar.
Of course to me...eating is a high point in Jamaica. So many likkle places with great food along the way. Plus, if going, I would hang out at Jake's a bit, esp. at the bar with Dougie...who I hope is still there. Hit Jack Sprats for a meal and also a great beach area near by.
Bottom line....take time and think about it..sometimes on vacation we have enough time to just go with it...other times...not so much. Make sure to have a good driver and some friends that know how to kick back and enjoy the vibes!! :)

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
You do need to plan for an all day trip. We hit the Appleton tour and some other stuff on the way. It is worth it to do at least once. The vibe is unlike any other - and it is great to chill for the afternoon as folks come and go in boats as you chill. We had the freshest fish ever on one trip - ordered the fish and asked what kind - they said they hadn't caught it yet! Fyi, no facilities at the bar..
It rained on our second trip and we still had a blast.

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
I enjoyed going to the Pelican Bar. Its a unique experience, however it is a long drive. For me, once is enough.

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
I think it is worth seeing at least once, but I would definitely combine a visit there with another attraction like YS Falls (which I did), Black River or Appleton Factory. Going with a group might add to the experience too. I went during a solo trip to Negril. There were not very many people at the Pelican Bar when I went so, as you said, the novelty did wear off.
I've done it once. I probably won't do it again unless my wife wants to check it out sometime. Knowing her, she'd prefer to remain on the beach than go to a bar two hours away.

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
We went with Rocky from Rocky's Taxi & Tours, stopped at YS Falls for a few hours and then on to Pelican Bar. Sat out on the deck in the sun, swam and had cocktails for the afternoon. This is a day trip for sure, but Rocky made it worth it with his knowledge of the area AND a safe ride. I loved it and highly recommend doing it at least once. Where else can you sit on a dock, sipping Red Stripe or rum punch and watch fish, lobster and stingrays swim underneath your feet!

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
Be there ..done it ..
& we really liked it ...
Very cool/chill vibe
Full day trip ..if you add in YS Falls
We chartered a cab for the day .. & it was well worth the $$$
Mi lady usually puts out a top 3 list before each reach .. could be something very simple ..to something like a full day trip
this was on her list so, we did it .. no regrets

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
Linston has done several trips over there. Makes for a nice day if you add in YS Falls or Appleton.
For years I would take him with me to the Estate on weekends (IF he did well in school that week)
First time I ever let him drive the jeep was on one of those trips.
It's a nice ride and stopping at Border for bammy and Miggle Quarters for "swims" (shrimp) is/was a must.
Here's his web page www.redplate-negril.com

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
Captaind,
Is Border a big roadside restaurent situated on a hill not quite in a town (sorry about my weak geography)?
Do they serve cowskin and chickenfoot soup as a specialty?

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
Rum,
The border I'm speaking of is where the South coast road crosses into St. Elizabeth parish from Westmoreland parish.
Just past Whitehouse. Roadside women selling the best bammy on the Island.
Here's the best Jamaica road map there ever was (Esso (Exxon) Gas station map from the 60s)

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
Rum,
Border isn't a restaurant it's a location.
It's the local name for a place.
Get Linston to take you for a ride over to St. Elizabeth some time

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
we did it a few years ago, awesome, we would do it again,we got married in Belmont and stayed at a guest house in Belmont, and did the Black River thing too, pretty cool, but it is a full day thing, soon come

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
Thanks for asking these questions. My wife and I had planned a trip to the Pelican Bar this last reach, but cancelled due to not wanting to take up an entire day. Next time we will plan ahead and get several people to go with us.

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
I maybe a minority, but I did not feel it was worth it. Usually in negril 10-14 days, and I'm mot one to eat a whole day to hit a bar that is two hours away. Many love it, the pictures of it were exactly what it looks like. Novelty wore off after 10 minutes.
Again, that's just me.....

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
I feel the same way Wis.gal. It's gimmicky, not really a Jamaican cultural thing and the only folks I'll meet there are tourists.
Pass!

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
Kinda cool. Once. Combine it with any tour that takes you inland to see a different Jamaica. Mayfield, YS are good fits.

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
We've gone to Pelican Bar a couple of times now, for us as with other the getting there is a very important part of the day. We had a great guide and friend and a very reliable vehicle. We normally go to Paratee and have a drink at Basil's Bar before taking a short ride (10 or 15 minutes) across to Floyd's Pelican Bar.
I would recommend going, it is a day trip but normally you can do 2 or 3 things in one day.

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
We went six/seven years ago....can't say I'd go again, but if you have a day to burn, it's something you can say you've done.....

I loved the time we spent at Pelican Bar. It was a lot of fun with a big group. The Red Stripes were cold. I was disappointed that they were not serving food while we were there though. Will definitely go there again.

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
hey you only go around once, go for it!!!

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
Just shuffle your feet while on the sand bar! Nothing like a stingray sting to ruin a good day! ;)
Once to the bar is definitely enough! Hanging out on the black sand beaches can be quite entertaining & beautiful!

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
We did Belmont and Lovers leap on our trip. Same wit the 2 posters above.
It took forever to get to Lovers Leap, so we didnt make it to Pelican until right before sundown.
I think it would have been better to get there at noonish.
However, Belmont and Lovers leap were both really cool.

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
We've gone twice. first time day trip to YS falls and Pelican with Rocky and then the second time Jack Sprats with Kingsly. Next time, we'll spend the day there, meaning, not combining with anything. For us, there's just somethign about laying on the planks and watching the day go by that's wonderful.
FYI, Boat ride from Jakes/Jack Sprats is twice as expensive than it is from Basils. 70ish vs 30ish for two people.
I think Rocky does a thrusday group trip that has YS, Pelican and something else for a low rate.

Re: Pelican Bar - worth it?
We went once, combined with a trip to YS Falls. Loved it, but unless we had someone who really wanted to go, I don't think we'd do it again.
