Has anyone been to the Jerk Fest held at 3 Dives the Sunday after Thanksgiving? Just wondering what to expect. TIA
nope,But we ate there when we arrived on the 4th of july. That was the BEST Jerk chicken i had ever!!!-Thats a must stop place.Great view as well
The last Sunday in November. Haven't been in two years, but it has been a great venue to sample various Jerk/Barrel Chicken. Maybe not "TRUE" Jerk Style cooking, but IMHO very good stuff. Paula and LLoydie do a great job!
I enjoy the crowd, but my only complaint is the music has been a tad too loud for my delicate ear drums... (not like it is going to change for me) LOL
They used wrist bands last time I went, so you could come and go all day and night if you pleased.
Enjoy,
VVHT
woot woot ... I have wanted to go for a long time. I will be in Negril this year ... will be on my list for sure.
have been......good food...WAY too loud and too crowded....for our taste. But need to experience once.
WHAT?!?! I had no idea about this as I am never there that time of year! But this Nov I am gonna be there!!! Nice!
Thanks for mentioning this!
I enjoy it.
The food is good of course - kinda crazy. So many things to try and my belly fills too fast.
I like it because it's a local scene. Yes of course there are plenty of local scenes but this is when families will come out, and with their little ones too - earlier in the evening of course.
Yes, you have to be careful or the speakers will knock you off the cliff.
I count it as a classic Negril experience.
Thanks for the responses. It sounds like something worth checking out.
I was there for the 2010 one - and highly recommend.
Had about 6-7 vendors selling their jerk chicken and pork with rice/peas and a few other side dishes in addition to 3 Dives.
Also a few crafts vendors and a couple vendors selling toys and glow necklaces, etc for kids.
A lot of locals brought their children early. They had a children's dancehall contest for them - very cute.
Then just a little after sunset they had a jamaican comedy magician on stage doing several tricks.
It was great watching the reactions of even the adults, who I don't think had seen anything like it before.
When 2 volunteers pulled on the ends of a rope and supposedly removed the underwear of a third volunteer - it about brought the house down.
Oh that sounds so cool, and I will be able to be there for it too..thanks for the info! I have to put that on my 'must do' list. :)
What time does it usually start/end ~ we arrive that Sunday!
I went 2 years ago and it was great had too much fun to tell !!!!
Patricia,
I don't know very much about the Jerk Fest. Found it on 3 Dives web page (see link below). Maybe once it gets closer to the date they will post more info.

Jerk Fest starts around noon-1pm for children/families....and carries on until around midnight.
Patricia, As bnewb said you can go as early as noon-1pm if you have little ones. But if just adults, it doesn't really get going until after sunset.
Of course the sunset view there is fantastic. So I'd suggest you time it to get there early enough, if just adults, or stay late enough, if with kids, to catch the sunset.
Thanks Gigi, Bnewb & Ohio_Buckeye :o
Hubby and I went to go last year, stopped directly across the street at our friend Miss Delsie's place first and while we were helping her set up she fed us curried goat and ice cold Red Stripes...the set up across the street at 3-Dives was getting under way and it was already loud. Too loud for us. So we continued to hang with Miss Delsie and chill at her place. If the music was too loud across the street, we couldn't imagine paying $20+ a piece to yell at each other.
Oh well. Will be there again this year too. Will check it out again, however, I have a feeling we are just old and not into the loud music thang.
Aud-A-Sea,
What was included in the $20 pp cover charge?
I went to the very first one at 3 dives can't remember the year. Then the admission price didn't include anything except deafening dance hall music in the ears.I loved the food and was interesting but I could get the same vibe at any street dance or party.I thought it was overated but it was their first one so maybe more vendors now.Just my observations hope you enjoy!
For 2010, the admission price was $500J, if I remember rigt, for adults - and $300J for children.
It basically helps pay for the cost of the DJ and the other entertainment.
Food is sold by 3 Dives at their normal restaurant, and several others from a row of stands.
Drinks are sold from the outdoor bar.
This settles it. I'm booking for late November.
Hi all:
A little Jerk Fest "history".....
The first Jerk Fest (that I know of) was in October 2002. It was originally created as one of the events that Friends of Jamaica USA held during the first FOJ Bashment. The two FOJ Bashments (October 2002 and October 2003) were two week long events intended to attract FOJ members, and others, to Negril during the slow season, and to spread around the tourist dollars to varying venues, hotels and restaurants. There were events and dinners everyday for the two weeks, one of which was the Jerk Fest at Three Dives. Lloydie and Paula did a great job getting it pulled together and there were jerk vendors from as far away as Boston Bay (Portland). If I remember correctly, one of the vendors from Portland, cooking with the open pit method - with pimento wood and a tin cover - won the award for best jerk.
I am glad to hear that Three Dives has continued the Jerk Fest, even though the time of year and approach may now be different.
Wayne
Thanks Wayne for jogging my memory (2002).I remember eating my way through that I think I tried every vendor there.
I'm going to be there the last week of Nov too! I'd read about jerk fest but didn't realize when it was. Is the music that loud even when it opens around noon? If so, that may keep me away.

Some memories of last Jerkfest!
Went last November a good time, would definity go
We've always wanted to attend this festival. We are big into southern BBQ and its part of our living. We have always found jerk style interesting and we appreciate the conversations and tips from local cooks.
I will admit we are probably not ones for really loud music, but we knew when we booked the trip it would be loud and we are also staying fairly close by 3Dives which we always have done on past trips. Just like that area and the hotels there.
At the same time we come prepared. We realize we might hear the noise from our hotel room so we bring a small white noise machine that is great for that kind of situation. Siesta time...no problem mon.
I've months to figure it all out, but I can almost taste the Jerk!
PS: Can anyone tell me if the price of admission includes being able to eat samples from vendors or is that a separate individual price?
I have been wanting to go to this festival..thank god I change the wedding date will be there in 2013...yay happy dance..
The $500J adult / $100J children admission price is just that - just gets you in. (I looked thru my pics from 2010 trip and found sign with admission price listed.
The food, I don't remember exactly, but was reasonable - like $500-700J for a quarter chicken or pork plate with rice&peas, salad, and callaloo - less for just meat.
I guess the sound level is all in the eye (or ear in this case) of the beholder - I didn't think was that loud unless you were in front of the speakers.
You can carry on a normal conversation everywhere else on the property.
Here's a few pics from 2010.

I went to the jerkfest last year and really enjoyed it..got there early, ate early, then went and spent most of the day swimming at Xtabi, then came back and checked out the scene and there was lots of people there and they had some bonfires and children's games early in the evening and then there was some good music, and I had a good time..would have stayed longer, but for some reason when I went around 10pm to use the bathroom, it was locked, and there was hundreds of people there and that was the only flushing toilet on the premises! There were a line because a few more shall we say 'adventurous' ladies went to the side of the bathroom where they had a small stall attached to it with a urinal only, but the days when I could hold my balance over one of those without touching are long gone, so I left, lol! I would hope that maybe next time they have it they would reconsider closing down the only flushing toilet on the premises and leave it open for people who need to use it, but other than that, I think it was a great event. Here are some pics:

will post a few more pics too in another post, can only do four at a time.
this isn't a very good pic, but you can see there were lots of people, I had a lot of fun hanging out and talking with different folks, including this one guy think his name is Ziggy if I recall correctly, and so here's a pic of him too, and a few of the bonfires they had:

Can rest of you see them, and do the links work correctly?)
(Edit2 - I can see the links when I go under "Thread Tools" and pick "Show Printable Version" - but that is only way???
I am using IE8 with normal settings)
