Hi All,
This is mainly directed at those who have purchased property in Jamaica. I am wondering if you carried all the money with you (and if so how) or was the money somehow wired. I am taking that step pretty soon and need some guidance.

Your lawyer should be advising you of the best way to send the money down here...legally.
if you plan to carry the money,,i recommend a paper bag to carry it
Shana...my info was serious. Please contact your lawyer.
Listen to Bnewb. Get an attorney and he/she will advise you.
Back in the day (1973) I carried the cash to buy my yard in my pocket but that was then. Also it was not very much money. Now I wouldn't even think of it.
A word to the wise........
I opened a US$ account at a Jamaican bank & wired the money to it (for a large addition). The initial money for purchase I think was a cashiers check to my lawyer, sent via messenger.
I had a US account in one of Negril's banks. When it came time to make the deposit I had my bank at home wired the money to the Ja bank and then went to the bank and got a manager's check written to my lawyer. I did the samething when it came time to totally pay off the home. I had everything set up at my bank in the states before I went down to jamaica so they knew what I was going to do with the money I had loaned from them.
I am sure your lawyer will advise you on how to go about it just like mine did.....good luck!
If you do follow lanetops advice be sure to put a large $ in black magic marker on the outside.
Seriously, Bnewb knows!
The lawyer advice is very good as is the advice given by people who have actually purchased property in JA...and while a paperbag worked well in 1978 I know people who have been arrested for bringing over 5K out of the US or Canada and it ain't pretty.
before I transferred the money from my account in the states to my account to Jamaica it was advised that my US bank (the one I had the loan from) send a fax stating where the money was comng from due to the money laundering act in Jamaica. Once that was settled the wire transfer went smoothly and I have owned my home now going on 2 years.
Good luck!
