Best Resort for Senior Citizens?
My 81 year old Mom actually wants me to take her to Jamaica after all these years! Now that she is single, she wants to travel. She is a bit frail, so I am wondering what would be best..as much as I don't like all inclusives, I am thinking that may be the way to go as I can't see her hopping in and out of cabs going to the west end with me for dinner at my favorite local places. And I think a huge all inclusive might be overwhelming. any thoughts?? Thanks so much!

Re: Best Resort for Senior Citizens?
I just brought my 77 year old mother to Negril. She wanted to see where my husband and I always go so off we went to Nirvana ( on the beach). She was able to walk around the gardens and use the beach as well. She has walking poles that help with her balance. I know cottage #5 is wheelchair accessible if your mom needs a wheelchair. My mother only needed a chair while we travelled through the airports. Everywhere we went the locals fawned over her. We were up on the west end a couple of times. She climbed in and out of cabs with me. We went shopping at the HiLo twice. She made out just fine.
And by using the wheelchair access in the MoBay airport, we didn't have to wait in long lineups at immigration or customs. They have a special aisle just for wheelchairs and one person can accompany the wheelchair guest. So we moved quickly arriving and departing.
I thought initially a small AI, as much as I dislike them, but Nirvana was just perfect. PM me if you have any questions

Point Village. Nice little gated community with 24-7 security. Walking path around the property that is walker/ cane friendly. Most importantly, quiet. Far removed from road noise, no dogs barking, just the sound of the tree frogs and the waves. These are private suites so she'll have a kitchenette for coffee or tea in the morning. She might even like to have some Jamaican cook come in and cook for the whole family. Just look into getting a ground floor suite.

This is was my exact thought as well. They have a relatively flat property and the cottages have a full kitchen in case Mom wants to cook. The only cottage to have AC is cottage 1, so depending on what time of year you go this might be important. My Mom 62 year old Mom stayed with us at Nirvana and loved the property.
Re: Best Resort for Senior Citizens?
I think the smaller the property; the better. The A.I.'s cover a lot of ground and it may be more difficult to get around.
Compact may be better.
Re: Best Resort for Senior Citizens?
Perhaps Grand Pineapple if mama don't feel to cook, and likes music (live and DJ shows around there). Seastar for cliffs, unless she wants an ocean view
Re: Best Resort for Senior Citizens?
Seastar also has a special needs ground floor unit with roll in or walk in shower and all the special bars etc.
Re: Best Resort for Senior Citizens?
Charela and Coco la Palm can work too --- i say put mom in the middle of 7-mile beach and let her watch "the antics"
Re: Best Resort for Senior Citizens?
i would also say nirvana. easy to get around and you can get the ladies to cook dinner for you.
Re: Best Resort for Senior Citizens?
My Mom 84, her sister 85 and their aunt (89) on a walker stays at Treehouse. On the age note, 62 in NOT old lol.
We have ramps, a wheelchair if needed and will serve you room service if stairs are a challenge. Breakfast is included, also our gardens are pretty amazing. Gentle yoga is also offered.

thanks, this is a great idea! I love that part of the beach. She is not in a wheel chair, just moves slow. She would not like a big place like a RUI, it would be overwhelming, although I think she'd like all the meals prepared..and maybe a buffet. I was wondering about Grand Pineapple, but the music from Alfreds may be too loud. I was also thinking Country Country or Crystal Waters, but I will check out Nirvana! thanks

Re: Best Resort for Senior Citizens?
hahaha, I always stay at CoCo La Palm and I can tell you Saveen, the antics would be too much for her! sometimes they are too much for me! not really, I'd give anything to be there now, instead of in a blizzard....she needs a somewhat quiet place..

Re: Best Resort for Senior Citizens?
thanks Gail, I was thinking..62? not old at all! hahaha, 62 is young! My Mom is 81...thanks for the info.
Re: Best Resort for Senior Citizens?
Nirvana is nice and small, 12 accommodations. A wide and deep beach with lots of natural shade. No crowding of chairs like country country. We rent a cottage because we like and use the cook service that's available to full kitchens. Mom tried lots of local food including a delicious conch soup the girls made up for us. They also made us brown stew chicken with roasted breadfruit. And we took advantage of not doing a dish, the whole time we were there. Had our own coffee and yogurt and fruit and sandwiches and beach food, so easy to eat and to eat well if you choose.
No steps, soft sand, quiet unless there is a concert at Wavz Park which doesn't happen that often.
Staff are really great and long term employees. I love it there and Mom did too
Re: Best Resort for Senior Citizens?

Re: Best Resort for Senior Citizens?
We brought a bunch of 20-something's to Grand Pineapple in March. They all agree.......it is perfect for senior citizens!

Sorry Gail, but once you are getting the senior discount at Denny's you are old. Just saying. Now it's the mind that needs to remain young......
Re: Best Resort for Senior Citizens?
thanks everyone, great ideas...Goldilocks, stay inside! It's 4 degrees in Boston!!!
Re: Best Resort for Senior Citizens?
Idle Awhile would be a great property. It's small and a great location on the beach. The restaurant is great for those nights when you don't want to go out and room service is no extra charge.
Re: Best Resort for Senior Citizens?
Good thread, I been thinking along these lines recently. What about along the cliffs, any suggestions there?
Re: Best Resort for Senior Citizens?
I've stayed at Coco La Palm and would say it would do very well for you, great beach location. Get a ground floor unit for your mom.
