sorry, I don't have time to read it all (you must be out of breath) looking forward to the next installment
More, more . . .
So we landed in Jamaica. Got picked up. Had a smooth ride into town.
Checked into shields. We booked through a 3rd party. Which took a deposit of 20% they had no record of the deposit at shields. And charged us the full amount. We showed them our bank account where they debited the 20%
No problem. They gave us food credit. Rooms are OK. Bar and pool was nice. The bar and restaurant staff not so friendly. We were the only Americans on the property. So I am assuming we were the only tippers. As I heard it is not customary in Europe to tip. So I am not so sure why they seemed so bleh.
No matter. We never spend much time at our hotel anyway. Breakfasts were good. Rest of the food was kind of crappy. Would not stay there again unless we got the room for 70 dollars or less. AC and cable though. That was nice.
Anyway. We decided that 3 dives was our spot for dinner. We started down the beach road and then up the westend road. Making stops here and there. That is until a crazed lunatic swerved in front of us. With yelling from the passenger side. "Get in. Get in" it was rob and Lisa. Also heading for 3 dives to Web cast.
Had a nice dinner and good times catching up. Both Rob and Lisa are quickly starting to feel like old friends as we see them more often than most of our friends at home. Always a fun time and I can't say enough about how much they care for not only the tourists who visit negril.... but also the people who live there and are basically their neighbors. Negril is a small town when you subtract the tourists.
Anyway. That's all for now. Let me see if I have any pics on the device I am posting from.
And no. The wifi on airtran is too slow.
Hey flipadelic, Badnaz just informed me of your belated birthday.
Sorry about being so late (but kinda my style), anyways Happy Late Birthday mi friend.
Hope u and Jackie are having the time of your life.
Jamb
Thanks bud. We are home. Waiting curbside for the parking bus. Balmy 34 degrees
After a long first night, where we over did it... (usually happens night one) were up and ready to hit the beach by 9:00. That might seem pretty early, but for us it isn't. I usually am up and out of bed before 6:00 am. So we actually slept in.
We had breakfast at the hotel. The breakfasts were pretty good. 2 Eggs, Bacon, 2 slices of fruit and a basket of toast.
After breakfast was over we headed up the beach toward sea splash. This would be the first and only time we made it as far as sea splash. We made it up there by about 11am. Sat down for our first dirty banana of the trip.
Strolled down to Wild Parrot, which is now SunQuest (Which may have been the name prior?) Same waitress, new bartender. I hear Richie is in MoBay somewhere.
After that, we grabbed some lunch at Sun Beach and hung out for about 2 hours or so.
Then down to Tony's where hung out with a very enthusiastic Canadian who lurks here occasionally.
After that we made our way down to sunny side for about an hour or so.
then down to Alfreds where we saw the sunset. I have some great pics of this sunset, that I will put in the next post.
After that we hit the Yellow bird for some more dirty bananas.
Then down to Bourbon Beach for about an hour or so.
Then down to our hotel, where we decided to hit hay a little early (10 PM by now). As the next day would be my 30th Birthday bash.
For some reason this beach tour sounds familiar, almost like I have done that before?
you could do that tour in your sleep
Hello my friend. Lucky you. Thanks for doing such a great job bringing the vibe to us all. Looks like fun. Sounds like fun. Must have been fun. The lobster looked sooooo good. Thanks. Bob
I actually had the Jerk Chicken. Jackie ate all that lobster herself. And as you know, she's not a very big girl, so it must have been good.
Hope we see you in april.
Happy belated birthday to you young man:)Thank you for your report, I have been on the walk you took, seems I walked where you did and can`t wait to do it again very soon.
Bless
semi(and crew)
this is the MAIN reason i love Negril so much....this type of walk is why I can't stay on the cliffs for extended period of time...so many interesting places t spend 20-30 minute stretches of time in...and lots of time the vibe at these places change with the customeers, so it is a new experience every day...lol...I love it...
Happy Belated Birthday Flip. I have to do that tour!
Excellent report. Incredible Sunset photo. Seems like you were there and back too quick. I guess time flies ....
Only a 5 days. It was a spur of the moment booking. We have a trip scheduled for 12 days in the spring.
Good stuff! Looking forward to hearing about your birthday bash!
So let's see. Where were we?
Oh yes. My Birthday.
Big 3-0.
We woke up around 8am, and all I could hear was the wind howling. I stepped outside for a minute and sure enough, it was very windy. Also rainy. A cold front was sweeping in from up north.
We had to eat breakfast under the cover of the Shields indoor dining area.
Jackie and I had plans to get massages that morning. So we did. We called a local whom we have gotten to know over the visits to come take us to get massages. When we got in the car he had a present wrapped for me. It was a Bob Marley T-Shirt. "Happy Birthday Mon" he said with a big grin on his face.
So we got our massages, and by the time they were finished the weather had cleared a little. Still not a great Beach day, but it was better. We walked up to yellowbird, so I could grab some wata, and check out the wifi real quick. When I checked my facebook, I had a message from Lisa notifying me that they would be up at Red Dragon for the afternoon. So we decided to head up there.
When we got there, the place was PACKED! More packed than any monday I have ever seen there. That's for sure. They had just run out of the jerk pork... BUT, No problem. A fresh batch came out shortly. When I opened my foil, it was steaming. Rob had a grin on his face and said that I got lucky to have it so fresh.
We hung out with Rob and Lisa, and their friends from Thunderbay for the afternoon. Rob told me, that he was wanting to make arrangements to get us a van for the afternoon evening and night. "Happy Birthday Mon" he said. Worked out great.
Went to the Webcast at Canoe. Met Crusher and his wife. Very nice people. His wife was very enthusiastic to find some Karaoke. She is a singer back home.
Details and the order of events are fuzzy but I think we stopped at Jennys first. They got me a slice of (normal) cake for my birthday.
I am fairly certain these are the places we stopped for birthday drinks.
No Limit
De Bar
SeaStar
Errols
MiYard
Back to Errols maybe?
Edit. No. Not back there. We went to Corner bar? I was over served at this point
Anyway. It was a great day, and it was my best birthday yet.
Thank you everyone who participated in it. Be it for 5 minutes or 5 hours or all day/night.
Sounds like an awesome day, despite the less than ideal beach weather! Wish I was there.
thanks for the report. So looking forward to some Red Dragon jerk!
Thanks for sharing. Happy belated Bday.
No problem. Thanks for reading/enjoying.
Birthdays in Negril are the best. And Rob and Lisa almost ran over me last reach.... love them and your trip report !!!
Great TR Happy Belated Birthday
What is the bar with the license plates? And is jerk pork the absolute only thing Red Dragon serves? (I love but not mi stepdaughter)
Nice little TR! Enjoying it as always. Glad you can frequent JA so much. Any more in this trip?
agreed- Birthdays in Negril are zee best!
Thanks for putting the time in Flip
No problem...
So, It's the morning after. We are up a little later than usual (10:00). I am shockingly feeling pretty damn good. We decided to skip Shields Breakfast and walk up the beach a little ways.
We found a little spot on the beach and had a decent breakfast. A little Jamaican boy came right over to Jackie and Slapped his coloring book on the table in front of her. They looked at it for a little while until breakfast came.
We walked up the breach and crossed paths with Rob and Lisa's friends from Canada whom we met the day/afternoon/evening/night prior up at sun beach. That's their favorite spot, and one of mine as well. We sat in the swings for a little while there. They took off down the beach toward town, and we hung out for a bit at sun beach. While sitting in the chair looking at the ocean, Jackie decided to lay out on the sand in her bikini for some sun. Not a bad sight. About 10 minutes later another girl her age, and her friend started playing volley ball right in front of her. The girl had on one of those dental floss bikinis, and was obstructing my view to the ocean. That was when it really hit me, what a lucky and fortunate person I am.
We spent the rest of the day making our way back down the beach.
At Tonys we met another couple. Negril and Jamaica Newbs The guy my age. The girl Jackie's age. The Girl grew up in the same town as jackie, and shared my birthday. We invited them along on a west end pubcrawl for the next day, that would finished up at Sea Star.
Stopped for some live music at boat bar.
Then at sunnyside we met another lurker from the board. She is from Toronto, and has been Negril 6 times and is spending 8 weeks on the island this time. Her first long trip. She hasnt had to the opportunity to explore the west end either, so she was also invited on our pubcrawl for the next day. And joined.
Had a last dirty banana at yellow bird.
We called a driver up. He took us to best in the west for some takeout.. Which brought to the room. Murdered. Went to bed early.
You forgot one pic Flip, the dental floss :-)
Yeah, I know. That's safe and secure on my Jamaica iPhone haha
I see you were @ Coconut International. did either of you have the lobster omelette?
They are sooo good. The lobster is cooked in butter with country peppers, scallions and garlic. MMMMMMMM
Always love to visit with Angie and the young boy.
Thanks Dave for the info.
Just had the standard hangover 2 eggs and bacon and fruit breakfast.
I'm always surprised at how much I can drink in Jamaica and never get a hangover. If I did that here it would kill me, so I don't
Glad you got to go for you bday Flip, enjoying the report bud
