Firefly - Inside tips and knowledge
Hello everyone! Leaving soon for 10 days at firefly. Is there any inside tips? Anything I might not think of to bring etc. any help would be appreciated. My family is in great need of a stress free vacation. I have recently been cleared after a long 4 year of hospitals, medications and treatments. My wife has taken a new executive position that has had her working everyday including weekends for the last few months. Even Christmas day. And the kids have had to deal with all this as well. We need fun, relaxation, and sress relief. Lets here from some firefly regulars!

Be nice, smile, remember your are a guest, not the "boss", and remember the average GOOD wage is 30-40 US a week, treat them generously..........

Re: Firefly - Inside tips and knowledge
We have stayed at FF many times and are coming back in a few weeks. Clean, comfortable and friendly. If you need it and don't see it, ask. The staff is very accommodating.
Help us out; are you experienced Negril visitors or newbies? This will help us help you.

Re: Firefly - Inside tips and knowledge
I love the Firefly and you can always find me at the bar , with my friend Maxine. She is the best. The location is great on the beach. I always walk to Best in the West to get the Jerk and Sunbeach always has a bunch of great people there. Ziggy,Doc,Captain Kirk and Mikey are just some of the operators that can take you out on the water. That grape tree is the best spot to chill under throughout the day. I love it there.

Re: Firefly - Inside tips and knowledge
while these are not specific to firefly,
bring a insulated cup and/or beer cozy if you drink.
Bring bug spray and anti itch cream
Bring a beach towel.
Bring small bills for tips for the bartenders and for house keeping. But you can also run a tab and tip at the end, which I just found out last trip.
For two bucks, you can buy postcards in the office and they will stamp and mail it for you.
Buy juice from both of the guys that walk by. Flex and I forget the other guys name but he has papaya-mango that is delish. Give them the bottles back when you are done.
try the jerk pork form the guy that walks by with the aluminum box.
get coco bread and a piece of cheese from the bread guy that walks by. A great snack for $2.
Be careful if you swim out past the markers, don't get hit by a jet ski.
Not really my thing but some people bring inflatable rafts.
Small gifts for the bartenders/maids etc. By the end of the trip, you'll be friends with them and something besides money is nice.

Re: Firefly - Inside tips and knowledge
IF you get an even numbered room (reverse for odd numbers)....pull your toilet handle out 1/8" and to the right 90 degrees, then out 1.25" and to the left 45 degrees...stand back as the wall moves back and the floor opens to the wonderful underground cave with an express railway to Cuba and beyond. While this sounds like complete BS and it is....you gotta try it to see if it works.
Have a great vacation...looks like you will be leaving around the same time I arrive. I know you know the runnings...but in case time have changed and you need to chill, go over the mountain to Likkle Bay...Sav or anywhere to get a bit of fresh air.

Re: Firefly - Inside tips and knowledge
sounds great Eco thank you

Re: Firefly - Inside tips and knowledge
All of the above is good, but it is a long walk to Cuba! Best in the West across the street has good jerk chicken. Rainbow Arch is a nice casual dinner spot; Charellas for an upscale evening meal (music and dancing on Thursday). If SunBeach has a band, go join the fun because you won't be sleeping! See if Larry is staying there. he can give good advice (he has a big mustache over his big smile). I usually have breakfast at the bar. Simple fare, but good. Have a talk with the kids that some of the folks on the beach will only be wearing a smile :)
Read around on the board for good advice on everything.

Re: Firefly - Inside tips and knowledge
Firefly has the Best breakfast. Two can easily split the omlettes or fresh banana pancakes Ah yes,,,Omlettes and Red Stripe to start the day.
-
Re: Firefly - Inside tips and knowledge
Don't be alarmed if you see some guy's pee-pee. It's a clothing-optional beach there.
-
Re: Firefly - Inside tips and knowledge
I've never stayed at FF, but have stopped by for a drink, and Maxine (Bar/Rest.) is the best...........she looks out for her guests/customers.......

Re: Firefly - Inside tips and knowledge

Yes. also try the egg and cheese sandwich. Something about it is just amazing. Maybe it's the addition of lettuce and tomato.

Re: Firefly - Inside tips and knowledge
Firefly is our favorite place to go and there is something about the egg and cheese sandwich. All day breakfast there yummy pancakes too. Bar staff great Maxine, Nita and Nezerene.....not sure if I spelled her name right...sorry.
I always get an aloe massage and peddy from Dornette. Feel sooo good afterwards.
For us it's like a family reunion every Feb.
Oncedeported do say hi to everybody for us. We probably won't be there until maybe the 15th.
Have a wonderful time...We know you will.
The toilet thingy was funny. Pretty much every year hubby has to fix it in some way or an other.
Cheers

Make sure "what happens at Firefly stays at Firefly." I mistakenly did not.
I'm not a naked person. Not at all. No one wants to see that. Even my wife.
But, hey, I was staying at Firefly last year. (And loved it, by the way. Great place.)
And kinda ran my mouth about how, at least once, I was going to skinny dip while I was there.
So the last day there, I decide to do it. And, here was my mistake, I decided to have my wife take a picture to prove it. And it was a good pic! As I'm heading into the water, good enough to tell it was me, but no details, other than my naked ass in the distance. A "classy nude", if you will. Nothing awful.
I decided to share it with my friends on Facebook. I mean, kinda wrong, but hey, it really wasn't a bad pic, or anything really wrong with it. Bad, bad idea.
A lovely friend of mine decided to crop my naked backside out of the pic, blow it up, and photoshop it. You talk about scarring for life? I, and my friends, can never look at the Rush logo the same. A lot of people were scarred for life, especially after the wave of people saving the pic as their wallpaper started.

Re: Firefly - Inside tips and knowledge

Re: Firefly - Inside tips and knowledge
I have quick FF story....about 20 years ago we were in Negril for my wife's 40th (which at that distant point seem to be a momentous birthday). We stayed in our usual spot for a week, then left and took a drive around the Island for a few days. Before we left on our drive, we realized our usual spot was booked and that we needed to pick a new place for the last few days back in Negril. We had both noticed the 3rd floor room at FF and thought it would be perfect with a great view -- and it was. At this point we had no idea that FF was CO. We found out the first morning when we came down the stairs and almost bumped into an older woman (70s) buck naked with an orange floatie wrapped around her waist. My wife was less amused when a group of beautiful, naked young German girls surrounded us on that small strip of beach (that doesn't seem to happen at FF anymore). She thought that was a tough way to spend her 40th but we both had a great time and enjoyed our stay. Fun little bar scene as well...............

Re: Firefly - Inside tips and knowledge
While you are lounging on the beach....take advantage of the great food that will be passing...patties, coco bread, jerk pork, baked goods ( all sorts of cakes and cookies), and ice cream too.
Miss Cortiss will stop in with all sorts of fresh fruit and Maxine makes a great egg sandwich. Enjoy...

Re: Firefly - Inside tips and knowledge
The water basin just outside your front door is for washing sand off your feet before you go in your room.

Re: Firefly - Inside tips and knowledge
Long story short..about 10 years ago I took my kids to Negril..stayed at the old For Real..gave the kids a heads up about the topless thing as they were about 5 and 6..didn't know the Firefly ..We weren't on the beach 5 minutes when they looked to the right and saw the full deal walking in and out of the water.I can still see their jaws drop in my memory till this day..lol..but..after the first day..they didn't even notice..but I am sure sure it made good fodder for the private religious school they were attending at the time as kids talk

Re the sports
Last year a young British family with an 7-8 year old boy brought a Cricket set, The boy and the Jamaican men played for hours. I don't know who had more fun; the cricket players or the spectators.
