Ok what would you do if suddenly you woke up on the beach....?

You go to bed in your own bed one cold night and fall into a deep sleep. You wake up in Negril on the beach. You also see you have become a real Jamaican. You brush yourself off. Pull back your braids and look around. Your wearing Shorts a tank top and flip flops. You reach into your pocket and find a $100J note...That's it. You must now Higgle for your survival. What would you do to survive and why?

P.S. Your on your own and have no friends that could or would recognize you.

Keep it fun but picture yourself in the situation or flip flops of another if you will.

Good one! After realizing I was Jamaican and not a tourist, I'd live off fruit until finding a job, hopefully a good job that paid at least $50 a week. Then would manage, as best I could, to make good honest friends. Would need a good sturdy box and a safe place to sleep and would need to be extremely resourceful, like Smith. I know it wouldn't be that "cut and dry" or easy by any means.

Ok maybe this one is too tough? Survival always is when you have to live by your wits.
Here is what I would try first. I would get me a big garbage bag and make a cardboard sign. Beach patrol Keeping our beaches clean. Donations accepted.
I would pick up all plastic paper and foam containers and tips that I could. Eventually form a recycling effort in Jamaica and become a kingpin $$$$ in the recycle biz.

I would first check my shorts to be sure I was a real Jamaican.....Do a little fishing...go throw bombs at Grand Pineapple......Beg fifty cents...go to Sunnyside for a beer...Beg another Beer...Take a nap...Go look for Dawn and Kitty...Beg Dinna...

I guess you can keep your life skills...In that case I guess I could have wired houses and businesses in Negril but life on the beach would be so much more fun..

I would go to the wholesaler and spend that $100 to buy a few snacks or bag juice and sell on the beach. Then use the profits to buy more and keep doing it until I was at the point I was buying cases.

I would offer to run errands for vacationers and work for tips.

I would offer to accompany tourists and show them around

Maybe if a different, non-worrying personality came with it...with my personality and quirks? Forget it. Your scenario would literally do me in. I have a lot of respect for the people who live and work down there, but I could not do it.

This is a great exercise for sure. Makes you REALLY ponder the reality of so many. As Flip said "it ain't all palm trees and sunshine"... I love Bluez answer... I would probably do the same thing in terms of running errands for tips.... Probably overlooking that I am encroaching on others turf and the new low guy on the totem pole. You'd have to earn a reputation of honesty and kindness. Hopefully seek out people to make mention of me on this board..
I guess the answer is I would do what everyone else has to do, and that is survive. It's humbling to take a pause and just imagine what it would be like.
I think I would also seek out Stephen West and try to drink in as much of his spirit of kindness that he puts out in the world, and hope it comes back to me.... That guy to me is the face of Jamaican positivity and lives... really lives the one love ideal...
I do wonder if I pack the sand to make it. I guess I do but have never been tested in anywhere near the way most Jamaicans are out of the gate. I think we all respect them for their tenacity and dignity in the face of so much adversity.

Print up a bunch of "1 hour Jetski rentals for $25" presold coupons.....sell as many as I could and skip town.

Take the 100J in my pocket and convince a $2 huh oh that exchanges sex for money to have sex with married men so I could take pictures and blackmail the men.

If I had to do legal things...

In the Dominican Republic I saw a few beach people that had relationships with business' that if they brought in business they would get a finders fee or cut on the profit. Some of us know the same thing happens all over Jamaica....so....I would walk the beach and cliffs and strike up deals with places for a fee if I bring them business. Pretty dumb simple....it costs you nothing to hire me...if I bring you a $50US dinner customer you give me $10, if they spend $10 you give me $2, if they spend $100 you give me....or a flat fee of $5 per customer.

Or rent one of those $20-$25 per day JA cars and offer free rides to Times Square and other places that kick back money to drivers.

Or create free wordpress websites for places that need a website in exchange for food/lodging/money......

Tons of ways to start off with nothing and make something.....

Wonder if we flipped the question... Ask a Jamaican friend what they would do if they woke up in Winnipeg or Minneapolis in January with $5 in their pocket..... ( ample outerwear and boots) Would they even want to trade lives or would they love the chance to ply their resourcefulness up here? Guess it depends on the person. Bet the answers would be entertaining and enlightening.
I am going to pose this question to friends next month. Bet it would give me appreciation for them and the things I take for granted...

First I'd look for Rob and Lisa and then I'd get some suggestions about starting a small marketing\advertising consulting "business".....assuming I still have the same knowledge I have today. If that didn't work I'd look for milk bottles :)
