Kuyaba: the good, the fish and the annoying
Once a trip I take my very special ex pat to dinner to thank her for all she does for me. This year I chose Kuyaba on the beach. The food was so so good. Snazzy. The fish was cooked to perfection, the veggies were exotic and the service was great. The rolls were sweet like the kind we used to get at the Chinese restaurant of the my youth. We split a house salad to go with our dinner, it was $6 and plenty. The house wine was good. My ex pat pal is very fussy about her fish, and she was thankfully happy. She reminded me to always ask if the fish I am about to order is FARMED and only to order the OCEAN fish as the farmed has those hormoney things in them.
The annoying is the bracelet seller in the front on the beach but so so close He was so near our beachside table that I couldhave hit him with my fish head. He literally harasses the patrons who dare step on the sand to look at the sunset. He slings horrible rantings at them if they don't buy his bracelets. He even says that JA expletive that starts with a B and ends with a T that can make the toughest looking route taxi driver blush . He yells racial slurs if you don't buy his bracelets. He goes on and on and on. He pants, paces and rants. My ex pat pal said that recently her tourist friend from frigid Minnesota was so badgered and pissed by this haggler that he finally threw him 1000 J just to get him out of his face. And he is in your face. I saw the Kuyaba guests sunset watchers harassed and defamed and deflated.
Now this is a really nice place. I am just wondering why it has to be messed up by this one nasty person and why Kuyaba can't just take the money they make on the expensive dinners and digs in the back and hire a security guard to deal with this annoying bracelet selling ranting and raving jerk. r and r doesn't mean getting ranted and raved at right?
P>S> opening that can of worms again. Because I take my taxis that start with an r and end with an e is why I can afford this nice dinner for my friend:rolleyes:

Re: Kuyaba: the good, the fish and the annoying
Wow! Cannot believe Kuyaba lets this guy hang around. No doubt he's damaging their business. Hope you posted your review on Tripadvisor. That might get their attention.

Re: Kuyaba: the good, the fish and the annoying
In January, he threatened to chop my head off with a knife. I had to explain to him that my martial arts training would allow me to take the knife from him and thrust it into his chest before he could blink an eye. He left me alone after that.

Re: Kuyaba: the good, the fish and the annoying
The same nut went after me on Beach Rd. and followed me to Bourbon Beach. Getting louder and louder, and wouldn't quit. I was patient and nice until he mentioned a knife. Then I told him he crossed the line - I came down here for a vacation and not to hurt someone but now, he was getting he was going to get his ass kicked. He shut up and moved on.....

Re: Kuyaba: the good, the fish and the annoying
unbelievale that a nice place like Kayaba would put up with that. We were lucky not to see him there when we took my brother and his wife there for a nice dinner. i ran into him in front of Rodel 1 day too . My conversation with him did not last long ut im not saying what i said to him ut he stayed clear of me after that lol

I know the owners of Kuyaba well! I have passed along the vendor concern. I'm betting it will be fixed! --Fadder Jim

There should be security on the beach and on the road.

Re: Kuyaba: the good, the fish and the annoying
That guy was there when we stayed at Legends in Dec. Micheal our security guy would make him move away from the guests on the beach, so he would stand by the fence at Tamboo, or walk over to Kuyaba side. He would rant and yak for hours. I believe his name was David

As if the owners don't know about him? Don't see him there every day, messing with their clients?????
-
Re: Kuyaba: the good, the fish and the annoying
Actually the owners probably don't know about him as one lives in Philadelphia because of a sick daughter and the other spends most of his time in MoBay at the facility there. Thought theyshould know someone on sight was not doing the job. One of the owners responded to a personal email from within 10 minutes of my sending it and was very grateful for the info. --Fadder Jim

You are exactly right, iteachdetroit.
It is up to the places you visit to make things Irie.
What sometimes gets lost here in all the puffing and blustering is that this is THEIR country and you are just a guest here. Thinking you can "stand your ground, pepper spray, or go "All American me" on someone to solve a problem that is up to Jamaicans to solve is, in my opinion, ludicrous.
Regardless of your backround in policing or martial arts or whatever, some people in Jamaica "don't play" and you may end up sorry for trying to be Rocky, Rambo or Dirty Harry.
Father Jim said he contacted the owners and that is the right thing to do. If you vote with your money then change will come.
I guess if it makes you feel better to vent your frustrations and threaten bodily harm on someone, then go ahead but let the Jamaicans handle their own problems.
Just my opinion,
Peace and Guidance

"It is up to the places you visit to make things Irie." "to solve a problem that is up to Jamaicans to solve is, in my opinion, ludicrous."
Jamaica does not have the greatest reputation when it comes to doing anything quickly (many would say that is part of the charm). I would think that solving the problem is not going to happen any time soon. I recently visited San Pedro, Belize and although I prefer Negril, it was very nice to not have one person try to sell me something that I had no interest in buying....the entire time I was there. I also visited Cozumel years ago and was told that the local government does an excellent job of letting their citizens know how to treat tourists and more importantly, the importance of why. I realize the higglers are poor and trying to eke out a living but they may be "biting off their nose to spite their face if people are turned off by it and stop visiting"

Please, if you are going to quote me, don't parse the quote. By taking off the front of the sentence quoted, it changes the meaning of what I said.
Thinking you can "stand your ground, pepper spray, or go "All American me" on someone...
That means that using these tactics to solve a problem is ludicrous not that it "is up to Jamaicans to solve is, in my opinion, ludicrous".

Sorry Fred, but I never took ownership of a friendship with you. If I get robbed by some "weak punk" then I will take care of my business like I always have. Your bravado may be a big deal for you in Negril but I don't think it translates well in rural areas. Just keep on doing what you do. I have no problem with anyone in Jamaica. Perhaps some day I will read about your exploits in the Gleaner or the Observer.
Nuff Said.

Read what I said in it's entirety. Yes, I said it is up to Jamaicans to solve. Said that very clearly at least twice.

This is what I said. I think you read it right but you just didn't quote it correctly. That is all I said.

Re: Kuyaba: the good, the fish and the annoying
Lax1724...I was just in San Pedro in January..you are right about the 'higglers'..I have been there 8 times and if you simply say..no thanks, they let it be..There were some timeshare people in the park by the clock tower that were being too agressive..they would even stop your golf cart and would go up and down the block ...no one was safe..A bunch of people (locals) complained and that stopped..they now have a certain area by their stand in which to try to sell the timeshares...Have also traveled to Cozumel.. a lot .....they are very good there..of course, there are a few but all in all..its pleasant...

No problem there Freddy Bwoy. I can see that schooling never did you much good before so I wouldn't presume to enlighten you any further. You might find Snooky at the Jersey Shore to be more to your liking than those pesky Jamaicans who live in their country and, by the way "use anti-America" phrases on a daily basis.
