Ital is Vital – A Cliff Dweller’s foodie trip report
Arrived in MoBay at 9:30am and a smiling Steve Positive was there waiting for us with some cold red stripes. Wearing orange shoes as advertised!
Arrived at Blue Cave Castle by 11am! It was great to arrive so early as we had the whole day to enjoy. Immediately got into our swim suites and hit the water. Made the traditional first day mistake of spending too much time in the sun and paid for it the next day.

After consuming most of a bottle of rum we decided it would be best to stay in for dinner at Teddy’s Hideaway. Had wonderful curry goat and Teddy’s special jerk chicken pizza. Definitely the best pizza crust we have ever had. It has been said here many times before that Teddy is the man!

The next day we rented bicycles from Gaz and took a trip into town to hit the cambio and picked up some supplies. Stopped for lunch at a place just west of the round-about called Sea View. The place was hopping with locals (which is always a great sign IMO). This place is as close as fast food as it gets in Jamaica. Order at window 1 and pick up at window 2 in 5 mins. Got the fried and the jerk chicken, both were excellent.

Went to Canoe Bar for happy hour and the steel drum show. Somehow it took until my 4th trip to Jamaica for me to try a dirty banana. WOW they sure are the best thing ever! And that is saying a lot as I am pretty much exclusively a beer drinker. We also loved the steel drum band. You could just feel how much they love what they do.

One morning we rode our bikes west down to Just Naturals for breakfast. I had first been to Just Naturals when they were close to Blue Cave Castle and had not been out to their new location. Man was it ever worth the trip! Their gardens are spectacular and the food was just as wonderful. I am a big fan of the Jamaican Breakfast and Just Naturals can’t be beat. I would definitely recommend making a trip down there. It is really something special and they do not get the business they deserve being so far from all the action. Remember Ital is Vital!

We kept riding our bikes west out of town. Once you get past the light house the traffic drops right off and the road narrows. It is incredibly beautiful down that way. We went all the way to the end of the road just past the Westender.

By that time we were in serious need of a Red Stripe so we booked it back to Whoopie’s for some well-deserved hammock time but sadly it was only noon and they were not open yet :(

We all agreed that the best meal of the entire trip was at Ras Rody’s Ital Stand. The place is run by a wonderful young man who is living the Rastafari lifestyle. He passionately explained what was in each dish. We had the combo plate which included: soup, coconut cabbage, pumpkin stew, TVP (textured vegetable protein) and cold cucumber stew. Delicious, organic and best of all it was ready as soon as we sat down! 5 stars Check him out if you are looking for a great cliff side lunch and good conversation. Sadly I did not take any photos, must have been distracted by the delicious food!
Our award for best jerk chicken goes to 3 Drives because their sauce is the spiciest we have found!

For me a trip to Negril is not complete without some patties from Niah’s on the beach. I love that guy. Jah Bless

Greatly enjoyed watching my buddy get his butt whipped at connect 4 by Ms Grace-Ann at Tony's Hut

Also want to give props to Tony, the barrel chicken guy across the street from Blue Cave Castle. We must have eaten there 4x this trip and we were never disappointed. I highly recommend his curry conch because it had a lot of stewed veggies and was hot. We like it spicy up in cold Canada!
And just like that is was time to go home. Steve Positive had arrived 30 mins early to pick us up. Clearly this man is not living on Jamaica time hehe. Jokes aside I would highly recommend Steve Positive for airport transfers.
Until next year…I hope
