Interesting. I had just read about someone getting Dengue fever somewhere in St. Elizabeth, I suppose it's possible it was actually this...

Scary stuff there. I usually seem to go fairly unaffected by mosquitos, but the misses seems to be a magnet for them (and sand fleas). Still, next year I'm packing the DEET.Quote:

Since 2012, the Jamaican health authorities have implemented strong mosquito eradication programs including the spraying of entire effected areas because of dengue.Quote:

A Texas woman died last October [2013] from a rare complication of dengue fever, a reminder that the virus has spread to parts of the southern US, federal health officials said Thursday [23 Jan 2014].
Her illness was initially misdiagnosed as West Nile virus, another mosquito-borne illness recently imported into the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports. It's the 3rd known death from dengue acquired in the United States in 10 years, the CDC says.
The 63-year-old woman had traveled to Santa Fe in New Mexico and it's possible she was bitten by a mosquito carrying dengue there, CDC experts said. Dengue cases in the US are usually imported, but in this case the patient hadn't traveled to anywhere the virus is entrenched.
The World Health Organization estimates that 50 to 100 million people are infected with dengue each year. Most get a fairly mild fever but 500 000 develop hemorrhagic disease, which includes internal bleeding, and 22 000 die. In this case the woman developed hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, a serious type of inflammation.
Her 1st symptoms were typical flu-like complaints -- fatigue, headache, leg cramps, fever, and chills. She tested positive for West Nile virus, but the CDC says it's possible that antibodies her body developed to fight dengue cross-reacted with the West Nile test.
Because people with flu-like illness so rarely get tested for anything, the CDC says no one knows how common dengue really is in the United States.
There's no specific treatment for either West Nile virus or for dengue, but the CDC says doctors need to be alert and that people traveling to areas with a risk of dengue should use bug repellent, stay inside with screens on windows and doors and empty water containers where mosquitoes breed.

[Although the above report mentions Santa Fe, New Mexico as the possible locality where the woman was infected, no recent reports of dengue there have come to the attention of ProMED. However, there have been cases of dengue virus infection reported in her home state of Texas. Although dengue virus infections are infrequent in the USA, and deaths due to it rare there, dengue virus infection must be considered when cases like these occur.

Many of you have heard about the progression of Chikungunya throughout the Caribbean with the most recent transmissions occurring in Central and South American countries as well as some imported cases in the US and other nations. The CDC has been closely tracking Chikungunya as it moves through the Caribbean since the Aedes mosquitoes that transmit it are common in the Caribbean and the US (mainland and islands). The Government of Jamaica’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Kevin Harvey is confirming that Jamaica now has its first imported case of chikungunya.
“The Aedes aegypti is a day biting mosquito that will almost always be found in and around areas where people live, work and play. The mosquito breeds in water that settles around homes, schools, churches, workplaces and playgrounds. Persons are urged to search for and destroy mosquito breeding sites in and around their homes, workplaces and communities by getting rid of old tires and containers in which water can settle, punching holes in tins before disposing, and covering large drums, barrels and tanks holding water,” Dr. Harvey recently urged.
The bottom line:
- Chikungunya is a dengue like illness that is rarely fatal
- Symptoms of Chikungunya fever include high fever, headache, muscle pain, joint pain mainly in the limbs and large joints and a rash. Although it does not often result in death, joint pains and stiffness can last for months and even years. It may become a source of chronic pain and disability resulting in the individual being unable to attend work or school.
- Infants and the elderly are at greater risk for more severe disease. There are some diseases that may increase the risk for severe disease such as diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease.
- Chikungunya is carried by the same Aedes mosquitoes species that can carry dengue.
- Unlike dengue, where many people have no symptoms when they are infected, the majority of those infected with chikungunya will have symptomatic disease
- Infections on clinical signs alone and chikungunya diagnostics are not widely available yet.
- There is no vaccine currently available for chikungunya; there are no antivirals known that will treat chikungunya
- Prevention of mosquito biting and control of mosquito populations is critical in diminishing the number of cases
Recommendations:
- Prevent mosquito breeding around your homes. See the attached Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) poster
- Ensure that you use CDC approved repellants such as 20% DEET. DEET in lower percentages is effective but needs to be applied more frequently in lower percentage doses. (See below)
- Picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus are also effective but last only 1½ to two hours. Products based on citronella are not effective.
- Check on the condition of screens throughout your home to diminish mosquitoes inside

Back in early May, we had a lengthy discussion about the spreading of the infections to the US - at that time we posted the prevention steps as outlined by the USA CDC and IAMAT in the US and elsewhere. I am posting this again. These same preventative measures are applicable most anywhere - and please note, the infected mosquitoes are of daytime variety:
